Has anyone seen any demo's of Dolby's new format or experience with it? from what I'm reading it looks like it is bring a lot to the table. Should help the 4k push too, which seems to be dragging its feet in terms of content.

So we have a few Macs running 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 and all seem to now have problems writing to NFS shares. 10.6.8 was the last OS that seemed to work fine. I know this is a 'known' issue with the Finder refresh etc, but we're having Nuke (7&8) not being able to render out a QuickTime to the network without it crashing. FCP will render to the network all day long. We're also having the Finder refresh problems.

We've tried various NFS export and mount settings and none have really fixed the problem.

Has anyone had the rendering from Nuke to NFS problem and found a fix? And has anyone got around the Finder refresh bug without having to install the FinderRefresh utility by Matt Timmons? (which seems to do the trick for now!!)

    Cheers,
    Dave.

    Good morning!

Whos got experience with multipathing Xyratex arrays in OSX?  The ATTO driver seems to consistently treat Controller 0 and Controller 1 as separate arrays, so theres no possibility of failover, and OSX eats dirt in terms of performance.

Only way weve been able to get normal performance so far is to present each LUN to one HBA port, so we can talk on all HBA ports, but of course that gives us no redundancy at all.

Im working with ATTO on it, but thought maybe one of you folks might have already been down the path.

    Thunderbolt attached storage.
posted by Grant Fraser on July 17, 2014, 11:25 p.m. (1 day ago)
Has anyone used thunderbolt to connect multiple workstations to the same storage ala SAS? A quick search gave me the Areca ARC-8050 which says it has dual Thunderbolt controllers. Does this mean that I can attached two Macbooks or MacPros and each machine will have full thunderbolt speed to the array? But it only has 2 Thunderbolt ports which is normal for an array so they can be daisy chained. If it was true dual Thunderbolt you'd think there would be 4 ports. Or maybe the Netstor NA211TB-LD Is there such a thing as a Thunderbolt switch yet? Basically I'm looking for a cheaper more modern alternative to the usual $40,000+ SAS fibre setup for multiple editing seats using Macbooks or MacPros. -- -------------------------------------------- - Grant Fraser - Sydney Australia - - mailto:grantf@grunt.com.au - - http://www.grunt.com.au - - http://www.dlf.org.au - -------------------------------------------- This email may contain commercial-in-confidence or privileged information. posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on July 22, 2014, 3:45 p.m. (1 day ago)

The VES Technology Committee has been working with some of the major application vendors in our space on the VFX Reference Platform http://www.vfxplatform.com/ to ease the burden of managing conflicts between different software packages and dependent libraries. Rather than mandating a specific Linux distribution, the idea is to come up with an agreed upon yearly set of components (compiler version, system libraries, open source libraries) that vendors of VFX applications on Linux can adhere to, making it easier for us to deploy all the applications we need on a single Linux platform, and providing guidance to the vendors as to what to target next.

Although the Reference Platform currently only targets Linux, theres no reason not to do the same for Windows and OS X going forward.

If you think this is of interest to your studio, check out the web site, and send feedback as to what you would like to see included in such an effort. SSA is probably a great place to discuss this as well, many of the folks interested in this stuff are already here. Also, if you are attending SIGGRAPH, you can drop by the VFX Reference Platform Birds Of a Feather meeting on Wednesday, 13th August at 10:30am at Vancouver Convention Centre, East Building, Room 8.

    Is this possible? (23.98fps non-drop-frame)
posted by Brian Turner Ottosen on July 23, 2014, 6:45 a.m.
We have been asked to deliver according to the specifications below.

But is it possible to have non-integer frame rates without drop-frame timecodes? How would this work?

Also the frame rate of 23.98fps must be 23.976fps. What do you normally call it?

    ------------------
File-based HD video media shall be encoded using Apple ProRes HQ encoder, using the preset described as "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p 48kHz" which has the following specifications:

Our Solaris 11 ZFS NAS has been extremely fast for our Windows boxes, operating at wire speed. Our Macs on the other hand max out at around 50 MB/s.

    Steps I've tried so far:
    10.8
    10.9
    smb://(sharepath)
    smb://(sharepath):139
    cifs://(share path)
Turned on internet sharing. (I know it sounds weird, but there are a bunch of forum posts saying this helps).

Our Windows boxes were originally getting slow speeds too but this was fixed by updating the NIC drivers. Our Mac Pro Towers use theIntel 82574L. Are there custom drivers out there for OSX that I can try?

    Any ideas?

    Hi,

I had a weird issue with one of there SAS expanders in an older SuperMicro case and there engineers helped solve the issue.

It really wasnt there issue but rather an issue with an out of spec LSI HBA.

Never the less they asked that I send em the HBA and a few days later had a solution.

    Wow, was ber stoked.

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on Amazon Glacier?  I'm looking at implementing it for small design studio that would like to save their long term critical assets offsite (currently a little over a TB).  The price for maintaining the backup on Amazon Glacier is relatively inexpensive.  I know retrieval is slower than other services, but that isn't a major factor.  Has anyone written any auto transfer scripts using their API?  Thanks in advance.
