New file server: advice on eliminating file
locking |
posted by Brian Krusic on Sept. 24, 2014, 1:05 p.m. |
| I found file locking to be absolute rubbish in most cases and needed in only a select few.
So agreed about no locking client side.

| Forgive me if I am asking too obvious of a question, but for your Cent machines, are you using the "nolock" option in your mount? What is the OS of the file server? Or is it a storage system like a NetApp or Isilon cluster? Are there options on the server that can be tweaked?

iCloud blocking all our email |

Has anyone every run into an issue where all iCloud accounts would not receive email from your domain?
All email from fusefx.com right now is not getting through to any iCloud accounts. Lots of very unhappy clients and producers.
We are checking into things like blocked lists and such. Our email is hosted through O365 so it's all going through MS servers

| I've done a bunch of searching and asked on the Avid-L and FCP-L's but wonder if any edit house sysadmins here have run into this and might have suggestions:
The current version of FCPX on Mavericks does not allow the in-place editing of AVCHD files from our Sony FS700 cameras. It wants to copy and rewrap them. Based on some searches this wasn't the case for the previous FCPX version (I don't know first-hand, we've been Avid and FCP7 up until recently) but it could also have been due to the version of OS X or Quicktime at the time.
I do recall a change at some point where OS X stopped displaying an AVCHD file/folder hierarchy but instead showed a single window with thumbnails of the footage, treating it as a Package file. My guess is that the AVCHD files are treated by Mavericks or Quicktime as a Package and FCPX is mistakenly thinking that this package file is the camera's card and won't allow pointing to the files to edit, even though the footage has been copied onto drives.
Is there some way to change some characteristic of the AVCHD package to allow FCPX to edit the files in place but not breaking it so that when the FCPX project is converted into an Avid project the connection to the original footage will still be there?
We've got 100's of GBs of FS700 footage and the thought was to have the producer offline with FCPX. I'm concerned that if FCPX imports/rewraps and copies the footage, the link to the original footage will be lost and once the project gets to the Avid it won't be able to point back to the original footage.
Thanks for any insight.

So I dont want to buy more tape drives and more tape and have a man come and take half of my tapes to one mountain and half of my tapes to another mountain and then in <insert tape half life> copy all my data to new tapes and new tape drives and
I want to encrypt my data and put it on the superhighway to a place where someone else will care for it.
Any of you manage to get off tape archiving yet, and if so, what are you using?

NexentaStor and Domain Controller Issues |
posted by Bobby Jain on Sept. 29, 2014, 2:20 p.m. |

Error: Sep 29 12:12:00 unicron smbd[467]: [ID 931549 daemon.error] ndr_rpc_bind: smbrdr_ctx_new(Srv=dc_name Dom=DOMAIN User=UNICRON$), BAD_NETWORK_NAME (0xc00000cc) Sep 29 12:12:00 unicron smbd[467]: [ID 931549 daemon.error] ndr_rpc_bind: smbrdr_ctx_new(Srv=dc_name Dom=DOMAIN User=UNICRON$), NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED (0xc00000ca) Sep 29 12:12:00 unicron genunix: [ID 138131 kern.notice] NOTICE: smb_smb_treeconnect: (\\dc_name\IPC$) failed, status=0x0 Our Nexenta server is quite slow to serve out files right now, CPU load jumps around quite a bit, sometimes stuck at 99% utlization. After a call with Nexenta, they said it due to SMB locks, and the nexenta server being rejected by the domain. They suggested it could be a time issue, but my servers are within one second of each other. From the looks of it, none of my workstations, or other servers are having difficulty contacting the domain, or staying authenticated. For those of you using Nexenta with a DC, have you had problems with staying connected? Thanks. | |

Wireless ISPs in LA |
posted by Ken Spickler on Sept. 30, 2014, 3:05 p.m. |
| I'm bringing this subject back up since it's been about a year since it was last discussed. We're looking for a wireless ISP for a branch office. Time Warner can't seem to build a very reliable network (so much for "business class") and fiber is too expensive. There was previous discussions about Towerstream and Fireline Broadband. How are these guys for reliability? I know Towerstream's services are different between <10Mb and >10Mb services (I think the lower speed services are WiMax versus licensed microwave for the faster ones). Does anyone have experience with the WiMax service? Is it reliable?
Thanks, Ken | |

The upshot: Samba 4.2 should include code that makes Finder a lot faster when trying to display directories with large numbers of files. And Apple deals with this with a vendor-specific extension to SMB2 (didn't even know there was such a thing).

The greatest new feature in Windows 10 |
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on Sept. 30, 2014, 10:30 p.m. (1 day ago) |
| Apparently in Windows 10 the command shell will allow...
NON RECTANGULAR TEXT SELECTION!
So when you select text, it will actual wrap around the end of the lines instead of unhelpfully selecting a rectangle of character cells.
(that and CTRL-V will actually paste into a shell).
I know, there are many sane alternatives to the default OS shell, but maybe this is the killer feature that will make upgrade from 7 to 10?
