to follow up on this, I had a quick chat with Darran last week...after my initial cynicism I was very impressed: looks like a great concept if you're using renderman or vray

mentalray is owned by nvidia now, and that seemed to hinder developing their solution

it's a card you plug into the PCI slot, already programmed...no need to reprogram unless there is an update/patch etc. it handles the raytrace calculations & feeds the output back into the CPU, which doesn't deal with any raytracing at all & is freed up to handle other tasks. thus much faster rendertimes

there is no need to "analyze your pipeline" or any of that funky info I got, from either the sales guy or their website(?)

it also has a very low power req & heat output

Darran's notes:

We're a small team of engineers with a $0 marketing budget :P so we may have been particularly bad at getting word around on our stuff, and we're just working with a few targeted clients right now as well, since we're still early in the roll-out stages of our solution.

- Uses FPGA processors on a PCIe board as an offload engine for raytracing - There's nothing fancy algorithmically, it's basically a highly optimized standard tree traversal algorithm engine on the FPGA. It's all the details on optimization of that implementation and partitioning it between the CPU/FPGA that is novel in our case. - The tree-traversal stage is done on the FPGA, while the downstream intersection / shader stages are done on the CPU. - Doing it this way, the final results are still computed on the CPU, hence the output is all identical to a CPU-only run; and additionally there's no need to load the entire scene primitive objects onto the on-board FPGA memory (only the tree is needed). - The accelerated engine is exposed for use via a simple C/C++ library call, and we integrate this with software renderer packages; essentially it's a plug-in to the renderers. - At the hardware side it's a low-profile PCIe x4 lane, half-length single-slot 25W board, hence it fits into just about all rack-servers that have PCI slots.
  • We've done alot of work on GPUs ourselves before arriving at this FPGA+CPU based solution. One large problem is that GPU processor architectures don't suit traversal type algorithms well, things need to be shoe-horned into place, there's a need to load all the scene objects onto onboard memory to gain any performance (limiting scene size scalability and running into other IO bound issues), and then comes the power consumption issue at 200W-300W which limits scalability in deployment at the renderfarm, etc.

  • Using 3delight as an example of a Renderman-compliant software renderer package, since the Renderboost engine is available integrated with 3delight today:

  • The user will need to do only one thing which is to add in a single line into the RIB file that instructs 3delight to use our external .dll or .so file for all raytracing

  • This works with any 3delight software release already in use and on the market today, there's no need for a special compile binary, etc.

Great to hear.  Now does anyone have a ballpark figure of cost per unit?

We couldn't use it in our current farm, but I would love to be able to speed up some look tests.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone on this list was involved in the development of the Dr.D Zenpack for monitoring BlueArc via Zenoss.
I'm interested to know if Dr.D (or anyone else) would support updating this Zenpack to support Zenoss v3.x as it currently only supports up to Zenoss v2.x
Thanks,
Mike

Make NFS behave like SMB?

$

By Rob LaRose -

I've inherited an NFS fileserver, and I may be wishing for it to be something it's not, but would love somebody to tell me I'm just holding it wrong?

OSX 10.6 client connecting to an NFS share server:/path/to/share/
The share has chomd g+s (sgid.. Some call it the sticky bit, some say that's a whole different thing) applied, so new files and dirs created on the share get the group of the parent directory.  Fine.
Got a umask of 007 on the Mac, so new files and dirs are created 770 / 660.  Fine.

When I create files or folders on the share through Finder or apps, the umask is honored and the sticky group is perpetuated.  Fine.

When I copy files or folders to the share through Finder, the umask is not honored as if I were creating a new file.. It just keeps whatever permissions are on the source file. This includes having NO sticky group for directories, so further subfolders & files under the dir get the user's default group instead of the parent directory's group.

Somebody tell me I'm overlooking something glaring and obvious here?

Raleigh studios in Toulouse, France.

By Johan Boye -

Hi,

I don't write so much to this ML, so I would like to introduce myself first : I'm a senior GNU/Linux sysadmin with experience on various system administration (Linux RHEL/SuSE/Debian/LSF, Solaris, AIX, a little bit less on MacOS), web technologies (Apache, LAMP, PHP, CMS...), storage (SAN FC/NAS - NetAPP/EMC ), visualization (VMware, AIX visualization, Xen), some databases (Oracle, MySQL) and some SAP stuff (ECC 6, BI 7, Solution Manager).

Unfortunately, I'm not working in a SFX company since they are pretty rare in France. Well, I could move out to join one since it's a part of my dream to work as an IT Infrastructure Manager in this kind of company. From what I've heard, Raleigh studios is planning to buy some studios in my city (sorry, I don't have any sources in English). Anyone knows Raleigh studios here ? I'm wondering if they will just have studios for shooting or also need some IT guys like me ? Is Raleigh Studios a serious company ? Can't find any info on Wikipedia. On LinkedIn, I found a Susan Z, Raleigh studios HR, should I contact her directly?

Well, if a 'serious' entertainment company decided to establish a new studio in my city and they look for IT guys, I don't want miss it ! Any advices/feedback is welcome !

I have  a need for a simple MAM but don’t have much budget.  Wondering if anyone out there  might know of a simple MAM that can handle QT playback in a console and have a db to do the following:

Enterable ID number

filename

File tags (simple text, relating to the file only (not TC),

Rating system

That’s it really.  Any additional functionality would be just a bonus.

Win or Linux, will be on a box SAN attached to a StorNext volume with 3-4000 DVCProHD QT files.

Any suggestions welcome.

Maya 2011 vs Maya 2012

Hey All,

As I am about to renew my yearly maintenance for Maya I was wondering....

How many studios who have both Maya 2012 and Maya 2011 are using 2012 vs 2011. My artists here think that the 2012 release was continually bugging and a piece of shiat, we are still using 2011.

Just curious :)

So I've been having a problem with my backup software...

I installed the single mailbox recovery and search plugin for Exchange server. We run the backup service on linux. I've been using this product off and on for about 10 years. Never did the server have a desktop, we always controlled it remotely with the administrative GUI.
There may off been the odd instance where we had to use the GUI local to the server, but i can't recall.

So about 2 WEEKS ago I opened a ticket, as every time i clicked on the Exchange cluster icon from within the backup software, the entire backup service would take a crap and die, without a single log being generated. dead, done and gone, except for the stale PID file...
you would have to log into the server and restart the services. any jobs which were running were unrecoverable.

After 30 emails and hours of webx's I started to ask for escalation,
as obviously this fells tool set had be exhausted. He says "we have to try a few more things..." EYE VAY.. ok ok.. he wants me to
install a desktop onto the server and run the GUI from there...

what? really... ok ok.. whatever....

so i install 'openbox' desktop. a nice light desktop. I fire off the GUI and as expected, no change. the services die as soon as you click on the cluster icon. I relay this to support. I also re-iterate i'd like escalation, as this is preventing me from backing up our environment. its been over a week! lord I hope the FS stays stable and snapshots remain a win.

the response i get back is "you are not running a complaint or supported config, install ubuntu-desktop as that is what we support, till you do we can not support you nor escalate your ticket. we never tested our product on openbox.

WTF

  1. it took them 2 weeks to say that?
  2. I installed the desktop by request. Why after 10 years of running a backup server without a desktop do i need one now all of a sudden?
  3. I can't find any documents covering supported "unix desktops"...
(the product started out without a gui from what I recall)
  4. what the heck does a desktop have to do with a service running in daemon mode? Do I need libX11.so.6 to do Exchange server backups or what?

sigh.... I use to have nothing but good things to say about this product, they just lost 38.6 points.

k i'm done venting...
