WOL and render farms

$

By Michael Oliver -

I have been toying with utilizing WOL in conjunction with our render farm / workstations. ?I have been monitoring usage and it seems that we often have machines sitting idle over the weekend for a period of time after heavy renders complete. ?The idea is this:

Implement a policy where machines sleep/turnoff/hibernate after a set time period. ?
If the render farm manager notices it needs a certain number of machines, it pauses the job, sends WOL magic packets to the machines it needs, and then resumes the job once those machines come online. ?Once the render is complete and the period of time elapses again the machines go back to their sleep/off/hibernate state.

Anyone else play around with this? ?Can you think of any cons?

I know this would mess with the uptime stats everyone brags about but I would rather brag about my power bill ;)

    After Effects CS5 bug? 23.98fps Quicktimes

    By Rob LaRose -

    I submitted a bug report for this already, but I guess since CS6 is coming, they probably aren't going to pay any attention to it.  Still, it'd be nice to know if this is something others are aware of:

    Exporting a quicktime movie from an AE comp at 23.98fps (project timebase 24) results in a movie that says it's 23.98fps, is 23.98fps, but the timecode track (as displayed by QT Player, FCP, etc.) are shown in base 30, with every 5th frame number skipped over.

    Frame Number display in QT Player also skips every 5th frame number, so the final frame number is not an accurate count of frames in the movie.

    True 24fps comps seem to be fine ? it's just when I use 23.98 / 23.976.

    Anybody know what's up?  Should I focus my rage on Apple or Adobe?

    BlueArc/HDS user group meeting coming to LA area May 16. Topic is today's Hitachi disk announcements

    <!--[if !mso]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->

    We will be starting a Hitachi Data Systems User Group in the LA/OC/SD/Phoenix area which will include legacy BlueArc users and content.  The first meeting will be May 16th at McCormick and Schmick’s restaurant in Irvine.  The main topic of interest will be today’s announcement of the midrange Hitachi Universal Storage disk, (replacement for the AMS) which can go behind the BlueArc head and can provide significant performance benefits (think streaming).

    The first meeting will have mostly HDS speakers, but we want this to become a true User group dominated by user speakers.  It will include BlueArc/HNAS content as well as other HDS topics.  Meetings will alternate between Southern California and Phoenix, I’m hoping we can have some sessions in LA itself.

    Here is some technical information on today’s announcement:

    http://www.hds.com/products/storage-systems/hitachi-unified-storage-100-family.html

    ..and here is the toplevel Marketing announcement with some highlights:

    Below is the invitation; if you can’t read it for whatever reason you can simply enroll here.  Hope to see plenty of SSA folks there!

    All,

    For a period of time I was adding people to the discuss list with Digest on..

    For some people this was great as we had many new users complain about getting too much e-mail.

    I have recently seen that a lot of new people have difficulty joining conversations when getting digest e-mails so I have stopped doing digest by default.

    If you wish to change your option, let me know directly... email: signmeup@studiosysadmins.com

    Do not send e-mails to the entire group :)

    <!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->

    Hi,

    Looking at Aspera Connect client for us to use for our data deliveries (probably using On Demand).

    In the docs I’m seeing that port 33001 needs to be open for TCP and UDP.

    Does that not cause acceptance of Aspera for technical or security reasons from your clients?

    So I’m guessing you always have to do a test download with the guys on the other side to check that all is OK?

    Also do people use the On demand (AWS) service ?

    Cheers,

    F.

    <!--[if !mso]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->

    I'm new to Python and I'm coming to it from PHP.  Can anyone shed light on why the following snippit from my menu.py doesn't work to add custom entries to the menu in Nuke?

    gizmoDir = 'Q:/Nuke_Extras/Plugins/Gizmos'

    gizmoList = os.listdir( gizmoDir )

    for g in gizmoList:

        nuke.menu( 'Nodes' ).addCommand( 'Gizmos/' + os.path.splitext(g)[0], lambda: nuke.createNode(g) )

    I get proper menu names for each gizmo from " 'Gizmos/' + os.path.splitext(g)[0] ", but "nuke.createNode(g)" always inserts the last gizmo from "gizmoList"...  So I get a menu group that launches the same gizmo from multiple menu entries.

    I realize that this is a pretty basic thing to hit the list with, but I haven't had any luck finding a solution online for what (I'm assuming) is a simple error on my part.
