OMG, new Maxon lic server?
posted by Brian Krusic on Sept. 2, 2015, 7:05 p.m. (1 day ago)
Hi all,

So I received a download link from Crapson and low and behold, I see a v17 lic server!

Could it really be a new improved license server?

Hope some one has tested.  I will be soon.

Hi folks, My google-fu is failing me: maybe 2 or 3 years ago I saw a product at NAB that was a 2U or 3U drive docking solution. There were 4 docks (iirc) and each one held an 8-pack (or 6-pack?) of 2.5 drives. The enclosure of these drive-packs was really just some sheet metal with a handle, holding the drives in the correct spacing. Youd shove the brick into the dock, and then presto, those 8 drives presented themselves (as a RAID volume, I presume, but dont really know). Overall the setup was pretty compact, actually. Anyway, I couldnt find anything like this any more. Maybe theyre gone now, ahead of their time back then. At the time I wasnt really looking out for anything like this. Now Im looking for some kind of multi-drive brick+docking solution, and of course I cannot find it or remember the name, and frankly my recollection of the details of that product are pretty hazy. Does this ring any bells? Thanks in advance, Antoine To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe

Hey everyone, I am in need of an electrical contractor ( preferably that will do networking as well), in Santa Monica.

Who is everyone using these days? I did a search, and it seems this question hasn't come up in a few years.

Thanks

Isilon - cut/paste folders between quota protected paths fails.
posted by Julian Firminger on Sept. 8, 2015, 10:25 a.m. (2 days ago)
It's a feature apparently, but I'm wondering if any isi users out there a) have this issue and more importantly b) have a neat solution or hack.
This cluster is OneFS7.1.0.6 (pre zone as directory)

With a quota set on both these paths
pathA = /ifs/A/B/C/source
PathB = /ifs/X/Y/Z
mv PathA PathB does not work.
but
mv PathA/* PathB does (provided there's only files in <source>)

As there is a quota set on both of these locations, I'm told by EMC that OneFS cannot precompute the new quota totals so it wont permit the action.

Has anyone out there come accross this issue and know of a workaround? (other than the obvious "write a script")

Who knew Wes and Harry were back to work?  I assumed when the big A got them, their brand would be integrated and/or crushed to bits.

How many of you knew they were back in the game and didnt tell me?

Intel NICs and branded SFP+ modules

According to:

http://www.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/sb/CS-030612.htm

Intel Ethernet SFP+ SR Optics and Intel Ethernet SFP+ LR Optics are the only 10-Gbps optical modules supported. These modules can be purchased separately.
Other brands of SFP+ (10 Gbps) modules are not allowed and cannot be used with these adapters.

And related to that, some models don't even take SFP+ modules, only twinax cables:

http://www.intel.com/support/network/adapter/10gbe/afdadualserver/sb/CS-029097.htm

Any other NICs brands I need to stay away from? I expect this kind of nonsense from switch vendors, but NICs?

VRay for Maya network installation and Bifrost issue
posted by Peter Nepp on Sept. 14, 2015, 8:31 a.m.

Hi,

I've did a setup with VRay for Maya 2016 (Windows) on a network share. Everything worked like a charm except that VRay has trouble with the Bifrost extension. I'm getting a error message after the VRay plugin was (successfully) loaded:

// Error: VRay: Could not load the Bifrost module! You will not be able to render Bifrost as isosurface or metaball. Error is:[loadLib] LoadLibrary() failed: 126 //

I've absolutely no idea why this issue come up. Does someone else has an idea?

Best,
Peter

The path of libVray.so (on Linux) is hardcoded to be in the maya's bin folder (only for the Bifrost extension). I have reported this as a bug and they are aware of this now. It didn't make it into the latest release and I haven't checked recently wether or not it's fixed in the newer nightlies.

Hi,
Im asking on behalf of some colleagues in Austin, TX who run a small independent production company.  They are looking for more IT support in the form of a part time sysadmin/consultant, someone who can come in if needed or work remotely if appropriate to help keep the network running smoothly, can feed and take care of various SOHO NASes, manage editorial SANs, make recommendations for purchases, interface with cloud services, be responsive to telephone support requests, etc.  Current setup is 90% Mac, rest is Windows and servers.
Please email me at antoine@floqfx.com if you are or know of any Austin IT folks.

Thanks!

Hi,
Im asking on behalf of some colleagues in Austin, TX who run a small independent production company.

Thanks!

Antoine

Samsung just announced the M.2 / NVMe equivalent to the SATA 850 Pro, the 950 Pro:

I'm finding M.2 (motherboard) to U.2/SFF8639 (drive) adapters, wonder if anyone makes M.2 (drive) to U.2/SFF8639 (motherboard) adapters that would allow you to use these drives in something like these SuperMicro boxes:
