Thumbs.db "best practices"
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on July 18, 2016, 4:06 p.m. (2 days ago)
We recently realized that we had an old GPO lying around which would disable generation of the Windows Thumbs.db thumbnail cache on network drives: turns out this is a pretty bad thing, since you can end up generating a large number of IOPS from Windows Explorer just sitting in a directory full of images.

A "simple" workaround is to disable thumbnails altogether via GPO, but that makes for some unhappy users.

Does anyone have experience they can share about this? If you enable thumbnail generation in a networked storage, multi-user environment, does it work? Or do you run into permission problems / thumbnail DB corruption issues?

Was reading an article on NVMe drives on The Register and this tidbit caught my attention:

===
As an aside, did you know that the 2685 v3s don't have hardware virtualization capability? Ability to turn off individual cores, but no virtualization extensions. This "metal only" CPU design is why...
===

And indeed, comparing the E5-2685v3 and E5-2690v3:

http://ark.intel.com/products/81712/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2685-v3-30M-Cache-2_60-GHz
http://ark.intel.com/products/81713/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2690-v3-30M-Cache-2_60-GHz

The 2685 shows "No" for the various virtualization-related features. Possibly due to living in a cave, I had never heard of that: a bit of Googling hasn't revealed anything, has anyone seen a discussion as to why this is a thing? Or is it just some weird feature differentiation to pad out the Xeon product line? I guess for render farm applications it mostly doesn't matter...

If there was any doubt: PRI service down for over 48 hours, still no ETA as to when it gets fixed.

Who would have thought I would long for the "good old days" of Verizon customer service?

Hello all/NY heads,

Trying to get something together to start this back up - and I'm trying to gauge interest from the community. A good start would be some beers and food and a conversation without any presentations or workflow chats to get us chatting about the kinds of things we're looking to see in NY.

So, who's interested in some rooftop beers and a chat about how we can get this kickstarted locally again?

Best,
DY

Hi all,

It's a long shot, but we have four racks going spare in London -- 45U, 4-post, 600mm x 800mm, square hole, light grey.  Vertical cable management, 8 x rack shelves and plenty of blanking panels available if needed.  There'll be three more to come in a few weeks.  Any takers please?  Otherwise they're getting skipped.

Thanks,
Tom

Going about building cloud available render farm

Hi all,
What with the flurry of interest lately in Google Apps for M&E workloads, I am trying to move our CentOS farm to an infrastructure that allows the "cloud burst" capability without the "Sorry, honey. Maybe see you in a week."
I have built the Katello piece and it's required Smart Proxies so a foundation is there.

I was going to use the RedHat Cloudforms model and try to build this out of upstream projects but apparently, neither Google nor RedHat have any existing pre-baked hooks even in their Enterprise offerings.

Everything is staying CentOS but I want to build something that doesn't take a lot of time to manage or require different tools for cloud vs on-prem provisioning. I'm only one in IT at our office so i'm prepared to put work at the beginning to make future tasks as auto-magic as possible.

Has anyone out there built a "cloud capable" provisioning system under one large umbrella? For RHEL/CentOS? Anyone aware of professionals in the NW that have projects like this under their belt

I do realize this is amazing broad but the lack of documentation in the projects is hindering progress and eating up time in my workload to deal with the rest of the tasks a Studio IT does ;)

Thanks

SDGE had a scheduled power outage this weekend and on power up it never fails that something always fails. This time it was one of the Netgear 48 port switches. It's a simple 1Gb switch for administrative Macs but it's 10 years old. What's the current consensus for 1Gb 48 port switches with say a dozen POE ports? Don't need anything particularly fancy, just needs to be reliable. VFX Reference Platform update
posted by Nick Cannon on July 18, 2016, 4:06 p.m. (2 days ago)
The Draft CY2017 VFX Reference Platform has been published at http://vfxplatform.com. Please send feedback either to feedback@vfxplatform.com or vfx-platform-discuss. As usual we are looking to lock down the Final version at SIGGRAPH time in just 3 weeks.

The transition to Qt 5 this year is requiring significant effort from the software vendors so the theme for CY2017 is to have a year of stability with minimal changes. At the moment that means the only changes from CY2016 are to Alembic, Boost, TBB and Ptex.

Speaking of CY2016, the final modifications to Qt 5.6.1 for CY2016 are now available:

https://github.com/autodesk-forks/qtbase/tree/autodesk/vfx/5.6.1
https://github.com/autodesk-forks/qtx11extras/tree/autodesk/vfx/5.6.1

All software targeting CY2016 should use these modifications which are a mix of backported bug fixes and a couple of DCC-specific changes that should be addressed in future Qt releases.

We will be hosting a VFX Reference Platform Birds of a Feather session at SIGGRAPH and this year we should have The Qt Company joining our discussion. All SIGGRAPH attendees with an interest in software deployment are welcome to join us at 12pm on 27th July in San Simeon A at the Anaheim Hilton.

Brocade vs HPE vs Others

Hey All,

We’re moving to a brand new building later this year and are going to build the network infrastructure from the ground up. Rare opportunity to mostly buy all new switches and start clean. We’ve traditionally used HPE Comware switches in the company (which I quite like) but of course are looking at other options.

Brocade is our main other option we’re looking at (and I know the guys pitching it will see this email… Kris….). My experience with Brocade is limited to the FCX and ICX Switches that came with an acquisition. The pitch is of course that Brocade is used heavily in M&E and the power of the VDX Switches and the “Fabric”.

If I stick with HPE Comware I maintain consistency across the continent for networking (and I can save money because I can make use of hardware that can be reused in the new building). If I go Brocade, it’s all new (and even with great pricing, ultimately more expensive). I can justify the costs if I’ve done the research and make an informed decision.

SO my question(s) to you, the SSA Community, what networking vendors do you prefer? What would you do in my scenario? Should I be looking at a different vendor entirely?

Thanks and Happy Canada Day to the Canadians and Happy 4th of July to the Americans on the list!

Hey, if anyone can chime in
We have a license server running with 15.0 licenses,
we downloaded 15.5.xxx and its saying that we dont have valid licenses to check out.

Do we need to pay for updated licenses to 15.5 or can we just request Sidefx for an updated licenses?

Not sure since its just a point release higher and not a whole new version.

Any insight would be appreciated.

We talk a but etc  I dont give him any details about our network even though he asks.

I got a shoddy biz card from him and shot over an email which he replied to meet in the parking lot to discuss logistics etc..?

Something about and his words; "Trying to create a Master Account status for the Campus.

Well, that corporate lingo bull doesnt really work or impress.

Does any one know of ConnectByNet?

There website looks cookie cutter, whois has some decent info on it; created in 04', updated just recently etc

They may be for real but I just wanna see if any one else has heard of em.

Hive mind,
Looking for some input on studio management software, ideally web based but locally hosted could be possible as well.

Essentially, Looking for a way to centralize alot of things like, Intranet resources, a way to catalog alot of assets, almost like Shotgun, allowing people to check for assets whether they are on the design side or the CG side, time management, artists management, resource booking, calendar? (considering hosted exchange) something to centralize alot of studio needs.

Would love to see what options are available!
