JOB - Facility move & ongoing support - Soho, London
posted by Paul Simpson on Sept. 7, 2016, 1:40 p.m. (1 day ago)
Hi good SSA Gurus,

Realise Studio and Finish TV have got hitched and are moving in together.

We are looking for an experienced linux guru to help us with the move and gradual and phased mating of the two tech infrastructures. He/she will need extensive knowledge in:
- Core services / DNS / DCHP / networking (HP procurve)
- Linux / Centos 7.2
- Saltstack
- VM infrastructure
- Bonus if knowledge of gridengine
- Excellent communication skills / ability to work in production environment

We're looking for a hands-on problem solver who's up for a challenge. The position would suit a freelance who is looking for ongoing work - as we're also opening another office on another continent.

Please get in touch if you're interested and would like to know more.

Regards,

Paul

Does anyone have a script to grab current v-ray license usage summary and spit out numbers that I can index and pull into something like grafana?

Seems silly that we likely all write our own scripts to format output, scrape html pages, etc.. to do the same things over and over. Re-inventing the wheel each time.

We oughta have a shared script repository for things like this.

..or maybe we do somewhere and I just don't know about it?

So, back in the day I used to be able to just copy the AE install folder to a network path, and run AErender.exe no licensing needed.

Seems to be no longer the case it seems.

How is everyone tackling this issue on large farm deployments?

Let's say you have a budget situation which allows you to pick one of the two following options for your primary file server: Option 1. Use your internal server room, which gives you redundant network links from your primary file server to your switch, but which has sprinklers in the ceiling and (because of budget) you'll only be able to afford the installation of a single, commercial A/C unit. Option 2. Use the colo datacentre across the street, which has top-notch air conditioning, fire suppression, etc., but you'd only get a single dedicated fibre link from your primary fileserver to your network. Which would you choose? Sprinklers and non-redundant A/C, or a single fibre line under the street from your primary file server to your network? Assume that cost is equal. Are you accounting for electrical and bandwidth overages from the colocated option?
These may not be balanced by internal electrical costs of providing your own AC.  These costs are generally where money is made in colocation, so you are charged above rate and cost is not always linear (ie. you are charged per circuit and per amp over).

In either case you still have a SPOF that could cause downtime.  Generally AC will fail more than fibre, but there are a myriad of variables to be accounted for that are too subtle for such a black and white argument like this (ie. development of the area, engineering of AC load, location of condensers etc.)

If the cooling is just for primary storage, than you could supplement with a 3-5 ton portable that could add redundancy.  These can be rented or bought outright for relatively cheap.

Ladies, Gentlemen and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri,

Has anyone got a good solution for extending USB3/3.1?

We have tried these:
Not so good, only work 90% of the time, poor support.

ThinkLogical can do it but at a considerable cost.

Anyone using an alternative that is reliable and priced for non Alpha Centaurans?

Hi, Ive been setting up and using Houdini for 20+ years, but strictly on Unix environments. Im doing a brief stint at a place where they run it on Windows. Windows to me is baffling, how in 2016 you can still have drive letters and files with tildes in them to indicate that the real filename is actually much longer. But Ill eventually get over that In the meantime, how do people set environment variables in a halfway intelligent manner on that platform? Do you make the desktop Houdini icon a batch file that sets env vars and then launches the app? Is this what Nuke does (I see it pop open a terminal window, run some stuff and then it launches). AFAIK the Houdini desktop icon is a direct link to the Houdini executable with nothing in between. Any tips or hints appreciated. Theres zero Houdini pipeline in place, and Im trying to bootstrap it to something meaningful. Upgrade Time - Looking for some feedback
posted by Jai Bhatia on Sept. 21, 2016, 6:54 p.m. (1 day ago)

We're going to be moving into a new space in the near future and are taking the opportunity for a fresh start in terms of building up the networking aspect of our gear. Just wanted to get some feedback/thoughts/ideas in regards to Brocade vs Juniper, or if there might be another option I'm not considering.

Current consultant has proposed the following:

Server Room: Brocade VDX6740T as a core switch (80G to main closet)

Main Closet: Brocade VDX6740T (80G to core switch) + Brocade ICX7450-48 (10gbe uplink to VDX)

This would yield 48x 1gbe, 16x 10gbe on closet VDX, 16x 10gbe on core VDX.

Total Cost: ~$33k (including optics, etc), if we go refurb, closer to ~$20k
Future Cost: Licenses to unlock 8 ports at a time as demand increases

I've looked into a Juniper solution:

Server Room: EX4550-32T-AFI as a core switch (2x 80G to main closet)

Main Closet: 2x EX4550-32T-AFO (80G uplinks to core switch) + repurpose existing 48x 1gbe switch

This would yield 64x 10gbe ports at the main closet.

Total Cost: ~$20k (including optics, etc)

Just looking at the above would have me leaning towards the Juniper solution as it gives quite a bit more bang for the buck. Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance.

In case this saves a few minutes for someone else: couldn't get Mocha Pro 5 to pick up floating licenses, turns out there's a separate download / build that has FlexLM support built in, and the (Windows) binary is called mochaproFL.exe, if you try with the default distribution you will get nowhere.

Still seems to respect the ISL_LICENSE_FILE environment variable pointing to a local file containing your "SERVER ... USE SERVER" directives.
