Rendering in Google Cloud & cost/billing |

Good morning!
Is anyone else using Google Cloud Compute for render farm expansion?
We're doing a bit of it, and I'm now trying to work out the best way to accurately report our direct costs on a per-job/client basis. Doing it at the renderfarm manager level isn't ideal since Google applies some different rates and discounts based on sustained use, pre-emptible VMs, etc.
Wondering if anyone has found the easy way before we start inventing the wheel.

| Hi,
I'm looking for some feedback on Sohonet (Media Network and Internet). We are still debating whether it is really worth the extra $$ compared to other providers. We are not planning on using any of their Connected Cloud Services and we already have Aspera transfer servers to shuttle the data between various clients. We may consider T-vipsin the future, but it may not happen anytime soon.
Feel free to contact me offlist if preferred. thanks!

dual link SDI stereo monitoring in Nuke |
posted by Brad Schaider on Feb. 2, 2017, 11:45 a.m. |
| We are searching for information on previewing Nuke comps in our DI theater, specifically through dual link SDI (one eye per SDI cable). We are versed in stereo, and also experienced in the whole broadcast monitor setup. We currently run Blackmagic DeckLink Mini Monitors and they are straight forward. What I can't find is whether a Kona 3G or 4, or Blackmagic DeckLink 4K Pro will be able to output stereo via 2 SDI ports. I've search high and low, seen plenty of people talking about it but never anything definitive. If anyone is currently doing this or has seen it, could you please let me know. The Foundry is extremely vague in their response (I can understand why). I'll be happy to clarify anything as well. Thanks! | |

Z840, v4 CPUs and Tera2 host cards |
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on Feb. 3, 2017, 6:50 p.m. (2 days ago) |
| Trying to get some HP Z840s with recent E5-2687W v4 CPUs built up for Flame. CentOS 7.2 (Autodesk "v002" ISO), recent DKU, Tera2 host card with latest firmware and Linux host driver. Machine comes up fine, but when you try to connect with a Zero Client (also running latest firmware), you get the login screen, but the machine freezes and has to be power cycled. If you disable the "Host Driver Function" (which hides the card from the pcoip host driver), no crash but you can't really use the PCoIP stuff without the host driver.
Repeated on 2 separate machines.
Pretty much identical machines with E5-2697 v3s are behaving fine. Anyone run into something like that? JF

Alta PCoIP Zero Clients can deliver a 4K UHD experience with Teradicis Cloud Access Software and Cloud Access Platform solutions. Also, customers can expect 4K connectivity to be available with Teradici Remote Workstation Cards in the second half of 2017. ===
Good to know that they aren't giving up on hardware encoding as an option. JF

Has anyone got any experience with, or recomendations for or against, loading up AE render nodes to be GPU heavy? I.e. 1070's/Quadros + Tesla or some such configuration.
I'm rolling out a small cluster specifically for 4-5K AE and my footprint is not very big. Has anyone done a cost/ben analysis between many low cost nodes vs a few blocks of solid nVidia silicon?
