QuickTime 7 Pro's ever more useless on Windows, but now even Macs are refusing to use it properly (forced to run Sierra by latest purchases...).

But we have a lot of integration with our tools and database... (And I guess the latest Mac version is much disliked.)

What is the best option to go to? Being able to read things like DNxHD encoded QTs would be good. Working equally well on PC and Mac would too...

With OneFS, does the /ifs root directory need to be exported? Can I remove that export without causing issues for the sub mounts of it?

eg.

/ifs is exported.
/ifs/project is also a defined export.

if I remove the /ifs export (default) will /ifs/project still be good? I see it was exported here and I'm thinking that may not be ideal.

Just opened a ticket with Isilon a second ago asking same thing, its a race! lol

thanks much and have a great weekend!

did another factory burn down or something? SSDs do more giga bitcoin hashes than GPUs? :)

posted by Jake Warken on Aug. 4, 2017, 4:51 p.m. (1 day ago)

The start of July marked GPL Technologies opening of our new Vancouver office.  We're gearing up to launch our most popular VFXnow Hardware-as-a-Service by end of Aug north of the border (brand new Intel Skylake-SP hardware is on route) and with this, we're hosting a networking happy hr following the long weekend Aug 9th while our founder/CEO is up from LA.

After responses to specific invitees, we have room to add some more folks, so extending to local SSA community to join, have a couple beers, and get to know each other.  Simply zip an email at jake.warken@gpltech.com with interest and I'll reply with when/where details...

Cheers!

Hi

Apologies for the delay.

PixCache is indeed built on AFM. Regarding any sprinklings of magic; buckets of R&D time and effort goes into pulling apart GPFS and its feature add-ons and ensuring they work specifically for Media demands [etc.] plus tooling and APIs over and above such as http://arcapix.com/gpfsapi and Analytics.

Happy to answer any pure technical queries 1::1 on Slack if anyone would like.

p.s. When's the next London SSA (ahem Pete)?

Best,

Jez

Active file management (AFM) is a scalable, high-performance, file system caching layer integrated with the GPFS cluster file system. AFM allows you to create associations from a local GPFS cluster to a remote cluster or storage, and to define the location and flow of file data to automate the management of the data. This allows you to implement a single namespace view across sites around the world.

Looking for recommendations to calibrate and standarize computer monitors (only) for a mid size vfx facility. The idea is to have them all looking pretty much the same, nothing fancy. Any advice?

I've looked into Calman solutions, and looks good for an entry point type of thing. What's everybody using out there? What are your thoughts and recomendations? Thanks!

The Shift to 4K Starts With Mellanox

For live broadcasting, content distribution and post production alike, Mellanox’s leading IP-based technologies enrich the video experience and brings the audience and content closer together.

The move from HD to 4K/UHD, 8K & HDR not only shows the need for absolute bandwidth, but also shows the inability of the current proprietary technology (SDI) & traditional Fibre Channel storage to deliver. Driven by their need to have the underlying hardware innovate at their speed, the media & entertainment industry is now transitioning to a converged Ethernet fabric for both their application and the storage, an open standard that has been powering the datacenters for decades. For GPU intensive applications, GPU-Direct on InfiniBand can provide an unparalleled high performance solution.

Best software to compare contents of drives?

Just did a massive 40tb copy from one storage array to another.  But due to the original system being an active production server, some files were open and skipped during the copy.   I need to do a fast compare between the two drive to see what got missed.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best software to do this?

If the software can copy over the missing files, even better.

Thanks.

From: https://www.teradici.com/pricing What happened to the Alta PCoIP Zero Client that was announced earlier? Teradici has received input from end customers and partners who continue to enjoy the simplicity, performance and security of Tera2 based Zero Clients. As a result, we have decided not to introduce the Alta Zero Client and instead focus on enhancing the feature set of the existing Tera2 Zero Clients that millions of users around the world are using. We will be introducing new features like 4K UHD, additional smart card support and more on Tera2 Zero Clients. While we work on defining our future endpoint roadmap, be assured that we will continue to invest in Tera2 Zero Clients as part of the Desktop Access bundle. === Having trouble parsing what that means. Does anyone have a contact at Teradici that one might be able to speak with about roadmaps? Might need to rethink how we watermark images/movies when we send out screeners.

Isilon Access Zones w/ a single AD? Why?
posted by Rob LaRose on Aug. 18, 2017, 10:45 a.m.

Happy Friday, SSAors.

We're working through some models here to meet MPAA and other data-security/segregation requirements. Using Access Zones and treating each project team as a separate "tenant" on its own network is one avenue we're looking at, but I keep coming back to the question of whether there's any real benefit to it when (in our case) all zones will use the same AD authentication source.

Applying ACLs at the share level to allow only network X to access share X accomplishes that, and the shine of Access Zones fades away for me after that's handled.

Am I missing some other big benefit to Access Zones in this scenario?

Welcome the thoughts of the hive mind, especially if you're using Access Zones already.

Anyone checked out parsec as a possible remote solution? Heard people are using it with paperspace as a gaming solution instead of buying expensive rigs.
