VNC for graphics systems
posted by Rob LaRose on Sept. 19, 2017, 3:35 p.m. (1 day ago)

We're considering putting VNC on our Windows CG workstations to allow screen-sharing with one or more Mac-based support engineers.

Some concern's been expressed that VNC software may install its own graphic drivers that could interfere with optimized GPU drivers from Nvidia, etc.

Anybody had this trouble? Or want to recommend VNC software you've used trouble-free on CG stations?

Hi,
So I wondered if anyone had any recommendations, for esxi storage. We have a small cluster running with essentials. I dont really want to pay the ESXI tax to grow larger and I dont want to buy a netappto host its storage. What would you recommend?
(PS) I have plenty of NFS storage in production but it also gets pretty heavily attacked by the render farm at times.

If you run Windows Software Update Services, you probably know that over time these servers get cranky and gouty, and if you run multiple servers, the sync between downstream and upstream servers can be a bit random. I recently ran across this PowerShell script: https://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/2998-adamj-clean-wsus and it seems to do a good job. It cleaned up way more disk space taken up by obsolete / superseded / declined updates than the built-in WSUS wizard, and it mostly fixed weird sync issues between downstream and upstream WSUS servers (for instance clients showing as fully patched on downstream servers, but 0% / never reported on upstream servers). PXE boot on linux, add menu option to 'boot strap' WDS service.
posted by Greg Whynott on Sept. 25, 2017, 5:35 p.m. (1 day ago)
Hello,

We want to set up PXE running on UNIX to be able to 'launch' WDS from our windows servers. Anyone done this?

The TFTP and PXEBOOT services are on linux. The DHCP is on windows. Everything works as expected, we can boot from local HD, do network installs, fire off memtest and a whack of other tools (all from the linux side).

We want to add a menu option to allow us to select the WDS server so we can install both linux and windows machines from the same menu. The hope is there is a method to 're-direct' the client to the WDS server after it has already DHCP booted and has the linux pxe menu displayed.

There seems to be a whole bunch of documentation on how to set up PXE running on windows to do both sides, but I'm not finding anything explaining how to do it from the linux side.

It seems to be a requirement to set DHCP option 66 to the IP of the WDS server, What we want to achieve is have option 66 continue to point to the LINUX PXE server, and have it handle the passing of the required information to the client so it can reach the WDS server, if that is the intention.

Has anyone set something up like this?

thanks as usual for your time,
greg

This may be market / region specific, but it is somewhat puzzling that in 2017, most clients still insist on the use of ftp for delivery. Apparently Chrome 63 will start flagging ftp URLs as insecure in December 2017: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2017/09/18/chrome-to-brand-ftp-as-not-secure/ Hopefully Safari will follow, and we can finally start making a case to use something that doesn't date back to 1971? Hi,

In the process of documenting what we are doing in terms of the MPAA Content Security Best Practices.

To that end, does anybody have an up to date version of the MPAA Content Security Best Practices Common Guidelines in spreadsheet format?

I've found a spreadsheet for the 2011 version, but AFAICT, the April 2 2015 version is current. I have the pdf for that, but not the spreadsheet.

Thanks in advance.

I know it's not officially supported, but have any of you guys have any experience with using the Skylake Xeon Gold 6140/6150 series on Win7 or even Win10 Pro? I've got a box with dual 6140 and dual 6150, which each boast 72 threads total with hyper-threading enabled.

I'm having the issue that Windows seems to see all of the threads, but individual applications do not detect, nor use more than 36 of those threads at a time. I can max out the threads if I run more than one instance of said app.

Anyone have notice anything similar? Should I just be using server edition at this point?

Thanks,
V

Some things to check:

- all machine have same AE version and updates
- all machines have same plugins, same versions of plugins and all plugins are licensed.
- mapped drives are mounted and permissions are correct for user account running the render process on all machines
- try not to use QuickTime movies as sources because that can fail when multiple machines use them at the same time. In general avoid any movie sources, frame sequences will render faster.

Are any nodes set to "render only" mode? If so, be sure you are not using any of the disabled codecs in your sources.

Are you rendering through AE manually, with watch folders, or using render manager?

One odd thing I have found is that you should always use a preset for the Output modules and render templates for the comps to the render queue. Do not customize! If it says "custom..." even if you didn't change anything from the template settings, multiple machine renders can fail randomly.

Hope that helps,

Robin Scher

Hello All,

I'm a  Render TD , and I've been running into this problem  with After Effects.  So  here's the prboem.  I have a group  of  machines that render  After Effects, and  what's   happening is that  on these machines the rendernodes are producing   0kb frames.  On  almost  all renders.  I have  done stuff like enable  local rendering to see if that'll help it out. I have re started machines and cleaned them up .   I'm not  sure what's  happening   here.     If anyone  could help  out  that would be great.

After Effects 0KB Render Problems

Hello All,

First  time posting here.  I was wondering, if any one here  has ran into  After Effects  renders  rendering  0kb  frames.   Every time I render  After Effects files,  I'm running into  0kb  frames.  I do  not  know how to solve this.  Also this  happens   speratoically.    It's very  difficult  to track down the causes. Is there a general  fix for  0kb frames .  We  render After effects  on Pc-Render nodes.

Regards,

CentOS 7.4?

Hey All,

Has anyone taken the jump to CentOS/RHEL 7.4 yet? I'm thinking of updating some machines (including my own) but I'm not sure if there's been enough testing on the platform yet. I know for a fact that Modo has some issues with it. But I have gotten Maya running in VM's earlier with it. No VP2 tests though.

If you use the following tools, I'd appreciate any pointers about 7.4:

Nuke, Mari, Modo, Maya, Substance Painter

Cheers!

Mike
