Are you using CentOS 7.2 or 7.3?
posted by Greg Whynott on Oct. 4, 2017, 4:20 p.m.
We are seeing a freezing issue when the firefox browser starts and in dolphin when detail view is invoked. Anyone else?

What we are seeing is a few scenarios where dolphin or firefox will freeze, dragging the window around leaves those trails all over the place. About 10-15 seconds later everything "lets go" and works perfectly for the rest of the day, unless...

You leave firefox idle for an hour or so (out for lunch for example). Then it does the same thing, freeze for up to 20 seconds.

we straced' the process and while it was stuck:

strace -v -tt -e all -p 13712

I installed kernel version 4 on the machine and it *appears* to make things better. I'm not seeing the stalls today. Will deploy to a few TDs for further testing. BUT -- that is not a solution for us. We can't upgrade all our centos 7 machines to version 4.x when they don't 'support' it. Lord knows what grief it'll bring when a required update is released for something else.

We also moved the home dir to the another NFS server, then to the local machine, no change it appears.

and lastly....

This bug was forwarded to me but I don't think it is related:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=917848

I say this as I tried the following and dolphin displays the directory without issue (there is a pause but it seems natural for the amount of files):

mkdir test;cd test

touch test{000001..999999}.txt

Moving into this directory with dolphin/firefox does not cause the freezing we are seeing a lot of complaints about.

as usual, thanks!

Hi,

This may be stupid question but it looks like aerender on OSX will not run because it cannot connect to the window manager. It's command line, isn't that the whole idea?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Greg

Asking for a friend.

We want to able to monitor and limit the bandwidth in and out of an Apple TV. Unfortunately the switch that we have (Netgear 10g XS-728T) doesn't allow QoS to that level (if that's even the right thing to do).

Wondering what sort of Systems wizardry exists in the universe to do this. Some sort of hardware device? Pass through on a PC with some sort of limiting software?

Any help appreciated. My friend thanks you.

Hard Drives for Dell MD3200/1200

Hey All,

We have an old Dell MD3200 Array (with MD1200 expansion chassis). Its got dead or dying 4TB SAS drives which we’ve discovered are near impossible to find.

Dell in their infinite wisdom chose to make it so you need a certified drive with certified firmware. We used to be able to find refurb drives through our reseller but now those are unavailable.

I can get drives that match the part number but haven’t been able to get the custom firmware onto them (yet).

In the meantime… I’m wondering if anyone in the community has any of these drives they would be willing to part with or know of a source!

Thanks!!!!!

Good day folks,
Since the talk about FTP last week, I am doing some research into FTP and data transfer alternatives.

We have
Aspera, Signiant, and FileCatalyst.

Who's got the best product, and the best pricing model?

Right now I am leaning towards Signiant as to its cheap, annual subscription and not pay per GB like Aspera, and Filecatalyst is licensed per your on prem link speed I.e 500mb, 1GB etc. Also Filecatalyst is a perpetual license so thats nice.

Would love to know everyone's thoughts.

Main thing we want to be able to accomplish is provide our clients\vendors a portal to retrieve and push files. We would love to not have to worry about "uploading".
We also would love to buy into a tech that would allow us to leverage our bandwidth to get data upto the cloud for some cloud rendering down the road, kinda like Aspera ATS.

I have looked at the UDT and other opensource UDP solutions and we do not have enough dev power to complete something that would be elegant to our vendors and clients.

Thoughts?

Thanks again,

Saham

High performance shared storage for Mac based studio

Hi Guys, just joined the forum; I'm very excited about learning and sharing knowledge with the community.

I'm looking for some advice in high performance shared storage.

I just joined a new studio that is a Mac only house and all my previous experience was in Windows or Linux based studios. We are looking to buy a new Storage server, maybe a software defined storage solution.

Since AFP is pretty much dead now, and the SMB stack is far from ideal in OSX; I'm wondering what people are using out there.

What about filesystems, any advice on good ZFS or GPFS implementations? Any advice is welcome.

Cheers

I'm looking to reach out to those of you who utilize Adobe Premiere in a Post workflow environment.  I'm specifically interested in your workflow process.  Adobe Premiere's primary claim to fame is it's ability to ingest numerous file formats without the need to transcode prior to adding these files to sequende time-line.  With increasing resolutions (5K and 8K) and ever changing file formats, we've noticed an increase in Premiere related issues (Audio dropouts, freezing, difficulty opening files, etc).  I am interested to hear if any of you have been experiencing similar issues using Premiere or are you transcoding some or all of your files before these files are added to the time-line.

BTW, we have not yet begun to utilize the proxy feature in the newest version of Premiere because of the increased load it would put on our storage.  Nevertheless, we are seriously considering.

Hi folks,

I am suddenly finding myself needing to source a couple of Supermicro 1U Rail Kits (MCP-290-00054-0N) in a hurry.

As I'm based in London, can anybody suggest a suitable UK-based supplier of these parts?

Cheers.

MP3 license and RV
posted by Greg Whynott on Oct. 24, 2017, 6:45 p.m. (1 day ago)

Had a user complain they couldn't play back audio encoded wiht MP3 on RV.

Looking into it I see to enable it you have to recompile a plugin after editing some source.

The RV docs said you need a license to use MP3 in most cases and this is why it is disabled as shipped.

I looked into it, and found this announcement from a few months back:

http://www.audioblog.iis.fraunhofer.com/mp3-software-patents-licenses/
https://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/ff/amm/prod/audiocodec/audiocodecs/mp3.html

Seems we no longer require a license, in case that was ever a thing for your shop....

Recommended A/C units

Hi all,

We are in the process of replacing one of our A/C units (12 ton) and was wondering if there are manufacturers that we should avoid?  Also interested if there is a consensus on what are the better units.  Thanks in advance.

Tesla M6
Tesla M10
Tesla M60
Tesla P4
Tesla P6
Tesla P40
Tesla P100

HPE Europe do not have any in stock or in demo pools.

Has anyone got one of the above that you could ship to The Netherlands for a few weeks. For rent, free, beer, any offer really.

Muchly appriciated dear folks!
