Thinkbox US Resellers

Hi all,

I'm currently in the market to purchase a few licenses of Deadline for a small farm at my university. I'm still waiting on confirmation, but I don't think we will be able to purchase directly from Thinkbox. University purchasing requirements prevent sales with international vendors. I've gone through the long list of approved vendors and came up with the 3 US based resellers and would appreciate any feedback or reviews on them from your own experiences.

RFX :: https://www.rfx.com/ [Premier]
Motion Media :: https://www.motionmedia.com/ [Established]
Cinesys-Oceana :: http://cinesysoceana.com/ [Established]

I'm currently leaning towards Motion Media, but that's mainly because I can easily tell what's going on when navigating their site. Could be a pretty naive perspective, though.

Cheers,
Mike

State of the art - Windows artist environments
posted by Michael Stein on Feb. 21, 2018, 4:35 p.m. (1 day ago)
Ive searched the archives and Slack and came up empty.

Whats the current SSA state of the art for managing Artist environments under Windows? Im specific referring to controlling versions of software (both third-party and in-house) on a per project basis, e.g. setting your project, then starting an app, and getting the right version.

Related to this question - how are people storing software? On central server mounted  as a drive or network share, or all local?

I have these problems and figure that this wheel has been invented.

Looking at dual 4k, Wyse 5060 does this. Cant find an equal on Amulet Hotkeys. Anyone doing dual 4k on a ZeroClient? Thanks gents! Deadline + Windows + SMB - Any thoughts?
posted by Alfred Young on March 8, 2018, 2:19 p.m. (2 days ago)

We're working with a very limited number of windows boxes on our renderfarm, connected to our servers via SMB.

In the event that the windows box runs a deadline job, it's restricted to saving files over smb to our network as a very specific user:group (deadline:service).

This causes a bit of problem, but I haven't figured out an elegant solution.

Can anyone chime in on how they handle Window-based render nodes? Any anecdotes would be appreciated!

Eventually I'll roll everything over to sssd but for now we are using good old nslcd. While this isn't causing any production issues I thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone happens to know why the below behavior is what it is.

Everytime someone logs into a system or does something where a lookup is going to happen, we would see a lot of lines in the logs similar to:

CN=Exchange All Hosted Organizations,OU=Microsoft Exchange Security Groups,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing
CN=Exchange Windows Permissions,OU=Microsoft Exchange Security Groups,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing
CN=Exchange Install Domain Servers,CN=Microsoft Exchange System Objects,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing

While I was fixing the AD and testing my changes I noticed that if I log in, nslcd would do the look up on the current logged in user in stead. Sounds confusing, I'll try to explain. (this behavior existed pre and post my AD changes, it isn't the result of any changes I made today)

on a machine with t.tiger logged in and working away, if I SSH to that machine as myself (ssh g.whynott@df001) instead of me seeing:

Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 nslcd[1310]: [6f4b97] <group/member="g.whynott"> CN=Schema Admins,CN=Users,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing
Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 nslcd[1310]: [6f4b97] <group/member="g.whynott"> CN=Public Folder Management,OU=Microsoft Exchange Security Groups,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing

what I instead see is:

Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 systemd: Started Session 5819 of user g.whynott.
Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 systemd-logind: New session 5819 of user g.whynott.
Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 systemd: Starting Session 5819 of user g.whynott.
Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 gdm: AccountsService: ActUserManager: user (null) has no username (object path: /org/freedesktop/Accounts/User717751540, uid: 0)
Mar 15 16:24:35 df001 nslcd[1310]: [6f4b97] <group/member="t.tiger"> CN=Schema Admins,CN=Users,DC=toonboxent,DC=com: gidNumber: missing

No matter who is logging after the system is being used by someone, it'll do the look up on the first person logged in instead of the inbound user... nslcd is running as itself:

nslcd 1138 1 0 Mar09 ? 00:00:14 /usr/sbin/nslcd

Now this isn't affecting anything from what we can tell, it's been using the same configuration for about 7 years now over multiple distributions (can't say if the logging behavior is the same though). Users log in, groups are correctly displayed and used, files created with proper ownerships...

Its just more of an ascetic (read ADHD) thing than anything, but I'd like to understand why its doing a lookup on someone other than the UID requesting AAA lookups. Going further, now that our AD groups all have proper gidNubers assigned to them, we won't be seeing these logs anymore, but stilll!!!!! wtf?

Hello Sys Admins,

I just wanted to post this list of open source CG Tools that can help you in the process of building a pipeline (disclaimer: I'm the main maintainer). It lists software, libraries, databases and tutorials. It's a collaborative list: you can add your favorite tools if they are missing. It's hosted on Github, so it's easy to contribute.

Hello,

I'm currently trying to put together a systemd service file to autoload the AD license server on boot. So far what I have is consistently failing and I have no idea why.

============================
# /etc/systemd/system/adskserv.service
[Unit]
Description=Autodesk License Server
After=network.target syslog.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=username
ExecStart=/opt/flexnetserver/lmgrd -c /opt/flexnetserver/lic/adsk.lic -l /home/username/adsk.log
ExecStop=/opt/flexnetserver/lmutil -q -force
ExecReload=/opt/flexnetserver/lmutil -q -force && /opt/flexnetserver/lmgrd -c /opt/flexnetserver/lic/adsk.lic -l /home/username/adsk.log
Restart=always # also tried without

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
=============================

Still a bit new to creating systemd files, so any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Mike

Maya 2018 Network Install for Windows
posted by Zorion Terrell on March 22, 2018, 8:15 p.m. (1 day ago)

Hey All,

We’re going to try and do away with the local install of maya and run a Net install of Maya 2018. I fumbled my way through this on Maya 2014 a few years back but I’m told things changed and its more of a pain for 2016+.

We’re all Windows 7/10

Any advice before I get working on it?

Thanks,
