Anybody have recommendations for Co-Lo locations in Vancouver that *get* VFX? Even better would be one that came with render nodes--if not years out of date.

Mac NFS mount crashes Finder
posted by Julian Firminger on May 31, 2018, 4:10 a.m. (2 days ago)
Hi all, (re-posting here from Slack)

I have a pecular issue with a 10.11 (El Capt) Mac where an NFSv3 mount made in the Finder (Apple-K) mounts but if you try and navigate more than about 3 directories deep, the Finder crashes. System.log has these entries in it:

May 30 15:13:04 Graphics-01-MacPro kernel[0]: nfs server [redacted].ubf.nl:/[redacted]: lockd not responding
May 30 15:13:04 Graphics-01-MacPro KernelEventAgent[108]: tid 54485244 received event(s) VQ_NOTRESP (1)
May 30 15:13:04 Graphics-01-MacPro KernelEventAgent[108]: tid 54485244 type 'nfs', mounted on '/Volumes/[redacted]', from '[redacted].ubf.nl:/[redacted]', not responding
May 30 15:13:04 Graphics-01-MacPro KernelEventAgent[108]: tid 54485244 found 1 filesystem(s) with problem(s)
May 30 15:14:04 Graphics-01-MacPro kernel[0]: nfs server [redacted].ubf.nl:/[redacted]: dead

Adding nolock to autofs.conf doesnt help but if I mount the volume old-school in Terminal, then it all works just fine.

The server side is an Isilon 8.0.0.4. We think there was an Apple update between when this last worked and now.
There's no firewall (or rather there's nothing being dropped) and other (different OS version) Macs are all fine.

Anyone come across this before? We're a bit stumped.

Does anyone have any slick tricks to improve read performance of a DPX sequence from an LTFS tape? I'm trying to restore a large DPX sequence from an LTO7 and it's painfully slow. Doing a "cp" from the tape is getting me about 6- 4K DPX frames per minute. For giggles I also tried "cvcp" but that was no better. The tape is using the default options for LTFS.

upgrade a 2011 HNAS 3080G2?
posted by Jonah Lefkowitz on June 15, 2018, 12:22 a.m. (1 day ago)

I know what the correct answer to this challenge is.

No, I should not attempt to upgrade an 8 yr old HNAS 3080 G2 that's completely out of support...

but if someone here has done this and found it to be completely painless and easy, I'd consider it anyway.

It's currently on 12.4.3924.15 and I'm trying to get it up to 12.7.4221.12 for improved SMB2/3 support.

Looks like it's attached to their unified storage HUS130 platform, which is also 4 yrs behind on firmware updates.

Any of you guys gone through this?  opinions on difficulty?  likelihood of it going terribly wrong?

Can you rate it on the Isilon scale of frustration?

10 - hardest = pre-emc purchase, I swear this had data on it 15 minutes ago...

5 - medium = post-Dell purchase, upgrades get stuck half way through, your firmware update has not been fully applied puzzles

1 - easiest = 7.X.X.X in the sweet spot of EMC ownership when it all just worked right

I appreciate any stories or anecdotes you guys have to offer as I've never touched this platform.

Looking for HPE Proliant hot-swap 2.5" SAS/SATA drives (Vancouver)
posted by Ronald Knol on June 15, 2018, 5:15 p.m. (1 day ago)

Does anybody in Vancouver have two HPE 2.5" SAS or SATA drives (>=500GB) for HPE Proliant (DL360/380, BL460/WS460) servers that they are willing to part with?

For my BL460c Gen8 blades the p/n is 655708-B21 (500GB SATA) but I believe that drives for the DL380 line are the same (p/n 652564-B21 for 300GB SAS) caddy. It's the caddy with the latch and circular light on the handle.

I'm looking for the drive and caddy combo.

Shoot me an email please...

Is any Isilon site out there using Scale Logic (or any 3rd party) for extended warranty / support services?

Frankly their pitch and certainly their quote seem too good to be true. And we all know what things that seem to be too good to be true are usually...

I get worried when you Google-Maps "Scale Logic Europe" and you get a photo like this:

I’m working with a client on the new TPN MPAA audit. Does anyone have info on how these differ from the past studio audits? Are there specific ‘gotcha’s’?

Seems the previous studio audits were an effort to encourage standards, whereas the TPN is a report card.  What does it really take to get a good grade?

Maya Playblast Render Farm
posted by Cole Abraham on June 25, 2018, 1:26 p.m. (3 days ago)

I had a suggestion from a coworker who came from another studio to look into running playblasts on a farm. It was apparently done at his last employment with a Windows environment.

What I'm struggling with and hope someone can clarify is the resolution of the playblast when run as a service is smaller than our playblast script sets it to. My theory is that session 0 has it's maximum resolution, the playblast window our script creates expands to the edges of that, and doesn't go any further. Session 0 isn't designed for gui applications at all so there doesn't seem to be any way to set a resolution for it. I'm not even positive that's what's happening but that's what it seems like without being able to see it.

Can anybody provide some insight ?

Hello,

The company has been hosting its DNS at a third party (ipage) for years. I would now like to move the SOA to our DNS servers hosted on site here at work. This will allow us to make changes the proper way (with vi) and have those changes propagated to another offsite DNS server acting as a slave for the zone. I need an external slave server in case our internet connection goes down, both SMTP (we use a fail save provider to collect our mail if our MX's are not reachable) and our externally hosted web site remains available.

Any recommendations (if they exist) on a provider we could use to host DNS but as a slave server? I was told we coudln't use the 'free' aws offerings.

Hi All,

I currently use the gefen displayport extender over lc fiber. We have had issues with the signal dropping out multiple times daily.

I've looked to see if I can find another vendor selling a similar product but I cannot find one.

Wondering what other people are using to extend their displays and for a couple of other recommendations.

Thanks all,

We're looking for a good way to simulate both bandwidth and, critically, latency situations for VDI connections. Bandwidth is easy but I'm struggling to find a nice neat way, or affordable software, to simulate different latency times for anything other than ordinary web TCP traffic.

HP RGS for instance uses a custom return port range (one socket per session) which none of the traditional tools can handle. In addition it's UDP which most dont handle too.

Has anyone else needed to / tried to do this for your own remote VDI deployments?

For UDP, you may also need some iptable mangling.
