I’m looking to store a disk image on the network. Boot from a USB drive, copy the whole thing (preferentially it will ignore empty sectors) to a network share, and then do the same to retrieve that clone on another machine.
I’ve used Clonezilla and others, but what do you recommend? Anything open-source and new I’d like to know about? :D
Thanks!

e-waste pickup
hi all, who picks up your e-waste? The company i am dealing with now is, quite frankly, staffed by idiots.
one would think that: 1) come here 2) load things into vehicle 3) go away
is a set of tasks that could be performed by anyone with even a shadow of knowledge or ability in any field whatsoever, but this e-waste company... sigh. I am in fact curious how their staff are able to get to and from their workplace without killing themselves or someone else.
anyway, we're in los angeles. I'm one e-waste fuckup away from calling one of those pickup trucks spray-painted with "we haul junk" and a phone number.
any recommendations for e-waste pickup are appreciated. And no, i won't tell you which company it is. I'm still not THAT angry.

Auto mounting smb shares on Snow Leopard/Lion
Hi,
I'm hoping someone could help us with an issue we are having with auto mounting smb shares on Snow Leopard/Lion machines.? We are using the OSX autofs system to have smb shares automount the same way we have nfs automounts. So we created a user that we would use for authenticating to the smb share. When we use the Go>Connect to Server and connect to our share via
smb manually, we can connect once we provide that user's credentials. We follow Apples autofs guide and posts on the web on how to do this but we have had no luck in actually auto mounting the share.
Here are the steps we used.
- I create the directory /mnts.
- In our /etc/auto_master file, we add the following line for our smb share.
???????????????? /mnts ? ? auto_smb
- Then we create an /etc/auto_smb file. In it, we have
???????????????? test??? -fstype=smbfs ://username:password@<name of server>/<share>
- We run automount -vc to apply the changes.
- I run a df -h and it shows the following but it looks like it mounted nothing.
??????????????? map auto_smb???? 0Bi??? 0Bi??? 0Bi?? 100%??? /mnts/test
- Then I try to cd into the share and it will output
??????????????? '-sh: cd: /mnts/test: Operation not permitted'.
The permissions are 555. So I should be able to cd into it. Has anyone ever experienced this or have some ideas on how to make this work?
Thanks.

OOM killer on linux farms
Hi All, I was wondering if any one wanted to share there approaches with dealing with OOM conditions on their farms.
I was looking through man proc and found
/proc/[pid]/oom_adj (since Linux 2.6.11) This file can be used to adjust the score used to select which process should be killed in an out-of-memory (OOM) situation. The kernel uses this value for a bit-shift operation of the process's oom_score value: valid values are in the range -16 to +15, plus the special value -17, which disables OOM-killing altogether for this process. A positive score increases the likelihood of this process being killed by the OOM- killer; a negative score decreases the likelihood. The default value for this file is 0; a new process inherits its parent's oom_adj setting. A process must be privileged (CAP_SYS_RESOURCE) to update this file.

ARP-based machine locator?
Hi there,
This might be a long shot but has anyone ever created or stumbled upon a tool that scrapes ARP information from switches, identifying ports with unique MACs attached, and thus by extension, making it possible to dynamically monitor what device is plugged in where? e.g., the kind of thing you want when you're wondering which floor of the building you left host XYZ on?

Safe minimum space available on NAS
Hi folks,
I'm not a proper sysadmin.. so excuse the layman question.
Back in the day, the common wisdom was never to run file systems at > 90%. Also you'd be seeing performance issues at > 80%. Approaching 100% and performance nose dives and data loss gremlins arrive.
Does the same thing still hold these days? Take an example Linux NAS with a 60T XFS with samba and NFS. At 95% used, it still has 3T free. That thing sitting on a NAS with a dozen people hitting it hard and another dozen hitting it softly.. would be OK? Might see performance issues? Data loss?
How about at 80%? At 99% are the klaxons sounding?
If it occasional creeps to 95%, vs sitting there for a couple of weeks... Does that make a difference to the likelihood and severity of problems?
Apologies for the 20 questions. I'd like to offer some risk assessment type advise to management sorts, but recognise I may be woefully out of date.

IBC-beer - update
Might as well keep it at the Pool Hole unless someone has a better suggestion. Figure we meet there around 7 and go next door to a great Japanese place for some food around 8ish. I’m open to suggestions though. Pool Hole is simple to get to from the RAI btw, No4 tram, get off at Spui and its a 2min walk.

macbook pro retina 2012 - unable to boot into 32bit mode
Hi,
macbook pro retina 2012 - unable to boot into 32bit mode
We've had a similar problem with Retina macbooks and Xcode 3. It appears the installer tries to make the kernel load a 32bit module, which would be fine if it tried it there and then. However it only rears its ugly head when you next reboot, effectively bricking the entire laptop.
Hi,Has anyone had a mbp mid 2012 (with retina) running 10.7.4 lock-up on them when they login under 32bit mode?I hold down keys "2" and "3" together to enter 32bit mode, get to the login screen, enter my password, then bomb! screen/machine lock-up!Any ideas?Damm Cisco VPN client only seems to run in 32bit mode. Why can't they release a 64bit version?!Thanks,Mike
