There seem to be a ton of tools out there to migrate from Windows server to OSX server but I can't seem to find any that do the reverse. ?Anyone done this before or have a super special link I could check out? ?Thanks in advance.

lotsa cores

By Gareth Schultz -

Does anyone have a good online resource, or reading material where i can compare OS's that are capable of managing and using 40 cores (hyperthreaded to 80)? It was recommended that I use Windows 2008 server datacenter edition because Win 2008 server Enterprise can only deal with upto 64. That was then argued to be 64 sockets, not cores. I don't want a recommendation per se, but just some reading material so I can make a better informed decision.

"Operating systems capable of handling more than 16 cores" is not a good search string, just fyi ;P

Metrics on user bandwidth

By Anonymous -

I'm looking for some metrics on daily bandwidth (not web usage, rather local infrastructure) usage by various types of artists.

  1. 2D Graphics - Texture Artist, Desktop Publisher
  2. 3D Modeler
  3. Matchmover
  4. Animator
  5. Lighter
  6. Compositor
  7. Render Farm Node
Has anyone mapped the requirements by department and segmented their LAN based on usage?? Segmenting Render Farms are pretty standard, but is there any other load balancing happening at studios?

Maya 2012 SAPack & playblasts

By Barry Zubel -

Hi geniuses and gurus,

We're having an issue with the Maya 2012 SApack (Linux) version generating playblasts, and wondered if anyone has come across it before.

We're attempting to generate tiff sequences, but after the playblast runs through in the viewport, fcheck briefly appears, then disappears with the following error in the terminal:

Warning: Invalid AW_COMMON location (/usr/aw), redefining ERROR, Cannot open file stdin; Broken pipe imgcvt.bin: IMF did not recognise image file stdin. blastOuLQJX.@@@@.tif : (10) broken pipe

The exact same procedure works perfectly fine on Maya 2012 (without the SA pack)

Any thoughts?

Speaking of beer and hardware maintenance ...

If anyone happens to be in Seattle this afternoon and fancies both beer and motorcycles across a vast spectrum of valuations ...

http://backfiremoto.blogspot.com/

It occurs on the street between the two bars: Shelter and the 2 Bit Saloon

4910 Leary Avenue Northwest, Seattle http://g.co/maps/audmn

I'll be there, would love to share a pint! there's sun! for at least 2 more hours!

I'll be the old guy with the beat up moto. ... hmm, that doesn't narrow it down at all.

I'll be the old guy with the beat up black Triumph and glasses. ... no.

oh! I'll be the guy with a beat-up Triumph with a beat-up SGI 3 button mouse on the ignition!!

Cities Summit to include Digital Media topics

<!--[if !mso]> <![endif]-->

Hi Everyone,

An interesting summit will take place in Vancouver this February, and one of the panels will discus digital media and how various cities around the globe are building the infrastructure to enhance digital media services to their residents and to attract our studios.

Some info about the panel topic:

Affordable access to hyper-speed broadband is the infrastructure that will facilitate the business models of the next century. It will be a major competitive advantage and catalyst for the companies located within the cities that take the lead in its development.

How can cities facilitate the implementation of the fiber and wi-fi networks that will drive the digital, creative, and smart utilities of the future economy? How can finance and corporate investment be pooled to fast-track its implementation? Panelists will address the business opportunities involved in grasping the emerging digital and creative economy.

Some info on the Summit:

Two years after the Olympics, Vancouver is reaching out to the world again with The Cities Summit www.vancouvercitiessummit.org, a gathering of urban leaders and businesses from here and abroad to discuss the partnerships needed to build 21st Century cities. IBM, Shaw Communications, Veolia, EDF, Daimler/Car2Go, Corix are some of the sponsors. International representation will include executives and urban leaders from London, Copenhagen, major US cities, Brazil and Asia. The event will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre from Feb. 1 & 2, and there is a discount for signing up early. It promises to be a major event to kick off 2012. Register now.

Cheers,

Ron

DS_Store hell

$

By James W. Williams -

We have a network of Mac and Linux clients which mount our filesystems via NFS. I have tried to stop the Macs from pooping .DS_Store files onto the NFS filesystems by using the command

defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true

which is supposed to disable them for a given user. I have also used the command

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true

to disable them for all users on a given client machine.

It doesn't work!! I still get those annoying .DS_Store files on my NFS file systems. Is is NFS? Is this yet another of the many ways in which NFS is utterly broken on MacOS X? Is there any hope?

Thanks, Jim

Mass linux deployment - OS and Software.

Howdy,

Thought I'd throw up a general question to everyone as to what they're using for deployment of linux, both OS and then software.

We've got kickstart running here which is great for PXE booting the OS and some simple settings.

What I'd like to do now is deploy flare to 50 machines. Any suggestions?

I've looked at spacewalk which seems to be a nice piece of software but I was wondering what everyone else is doing?

There's a great paid software that I found but it's a tad on the expensive side, bonus is that it's multi-platform: http://www.filewave.com/en/home

*Note: Not a pitch, just good info. You can now test Red Hat's MRG GRID Rendering Solution via the Cloud as not to bother any active working Nodes, so if you feel so compelled give it a whirl. See link:

mail spam filtering - what are you using?

$

By Greg Whynott -

Just wondering what folks are using when rolling their own 'free' spam filtering solution these days.  whats hot?

I am putting one together now,  so far it goes like this..

[postfix accepts mail,   does standard checks; rbl, headers,  |  postscreen ]  |  [ policyd ]   |  [mailserver.]

each [ ] defines a separate machine,  3 in this case.

I liked the idea of policyd running on a dedicated machine.  I want to move my AV and other things onto the policyd server,  so that postfix is only handling mail delivery with a few checks,  and the dedicated machine does all the heavy lifting.

what are you doing?  any new projects out there that are worth a look?
