BlackMagic Decklink 3D SDI + HDMI Output and Audio Sync

By Nick Allevato - Howdy all,

Just built out an edit bay with a Macpro, Blackmagic card, SSD for Ssytem drive, and RAID for video, and scatch RAID.

Performance seems solid and consistent, the only issue I am dealing with is audio/picture sync.

FCP is set to jam video out of the blackmagic card. Seems generally in sync...but I may be getting a little lag over the HDMI port versus the SDI.

The HDMI drives a high-end plasma, the SDI drives a high-end LCD (for color).

Audio is currently coming out of the system audio, so the MacPro monitor. Seems like the audio stays in sync with the display, a little lag with the SDI LCD, and a little more with the HDMI plasma.

Anyone have any experience with this? Do I need to jam audio out on the Blackmagic card for sync? Is it the display audio that is causing the lag?

Any advice or recommendations on edit-bay experts is much appreciated.

-nick

By Klaus Steden - One thing that made my week better was finding out that this exists: http://www.stack-on.com/categories/professional-plastic/products/156 It's a tool box that doubles as a step stool. Full of win (and tools), it's tough to beat for the price. If you have space limitations in your machine room or height-restricted engineers, it's an awesome idea. By Saker Klippsten - Any Screen / Projector Gurus out there?

Has anyone tested out the Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector. Not so concerned with 3D as I am about 2D.
We need ~14' wide screen and the projector would be ~20ft from the screen.? If anyone has screen reseller / integrator let me know!

Thanks!

Hey, I think I know the answer, but does anyone know if you can install C4D on Windows using a command line??

I would really like to avoid clicking my way through the installer over and over on my farm.

Thank you SSA: BlueArc, Windows 7, Kerberos and ntp drift

By Jean-Francois Panisset - A quick thank you to the collective SSA mind for helping solve a weird problem we ran into this weekend: our Windows 7 farm suddenly stopped working, which turned out to be caused by a one time failure to connect to UNC shares when creating a new user session: dir \\my_bluearc_server\share The request is not supported dir \\my_bluearc_server\share Scratched my head for (quite) a while, finally WireShark revealed a Kerberos error related to clock skew: sure enough, our BlueArc clock had drifted more than 5 minutes off our Windows 7 clients (even though it claims to be locked to the same NTP server...) and hilarity ensued. That's when the recent SSA thread about BlueArcs and ntp clocks came to mind, 10 second fix was to reset the clock on the BlueArc, everything back to normal. So once again, SSA proves its immense worth to our (small) community... By Saker Klippsten - After reading the artical on the supercomputer. Thanks Mr. Oliver
I got distracted by this was a few links below .

?Cool/Scary - I wonder what the "real resolution is"

Not sure you can outrun this as it covers 15sq miles at a time. That combined with the fact the Global Hawk can be in the air for 22 hours at a time between refueling.
600GB of data per second.

I want to know what they are using to beam that back in real time. Since when aquiring a target I am sure latency is an important factor.

Tactic: unreasonable database perms?

By Cal Sawyer - Or maybe it's just_me, and I'll admit right out front that i'm no Postgres (or any other) DBA :) Tactic demands Trust auth in the Postgres pg_hba.conf. Any attempt to set this to "password" fails with "psycopg2.OperationalError: fe_sendauth: no password supplied". Basically, Tactic isn't even attempting to use the db password defined in it's main configfile. The documentation says "Trust" anything that wants to connect to this or any other pgsql db resident on the server. This irks me at a cellular level. So, has anyone else run into this and did you find a way around it? thanks - Cal Sawyer, Bluebolt To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe

Flame and LTO

By Peter Smith - Hi all We're looking at getting a tape drive for our Flame. I was just going to archive to a local removable disk every night, and also to central storage. But our flame op reckons it will be better to archive to LTO every night. And also that LTO is often used to supply assets/archives between post houses. I see the pros and cons as follows: :: Removable disks + central storage :: Pros: Cheap initial investment, easy to set up, archives in two locations Cons: Price of (?35/TB), speed (80MB/s), likely to get swiped. :: LTO-4 :: Pros: Price of media (?20/TB), speed (120MB/s), less likely to get swiped. Cons: Expensive initial investment, not so easy to set up, archives in only one location What do you fine people use? And why? -- Pete Smith DevOp/System Administrator Realise Studio 12/13 Poland Street, London W1F 8QB T. +44 (0)20 7165 9644 realisestudio.com To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe

3D Graphics Cards

By Jason Fotter - I'm sure there has been many a discussion on this topic but I thought I would throw out what I'm currently dealing with. I recently ordered a workstation with a Quadro K5000 in it. We use 3D Studio Max / Nuke and the reason for going with this card is the artist using it was also using Naiad and hitting memory limits with the Quadro 4000 he had. I've had good results with the Quadro 4000's. I have a lot of dual boot Mac Pro's and the 4000's seem to work well in both OS X and WIndows 7. The artist who currently has the K5000 is pretty much ready to throw his computer in the trash. I'm close to trying out a GTX690 to see if it's any better. I don't really want to put another Quadro 4000 in it and would like to go with a newer card. With the latest version of Nuke being GPU Accelerated I was hoping the K5000 would be a stellar card. I'm using the latest drivers. He reports that basic mouse interaction is slow compared to what he had before. According to the Autodesk Approved Graphics cards the K5000 is on there. No mention of any of the GeForce Cards. Is anyone using the K5000 in production with good results? What is the overall feeling when it comes to Gaming VS Professional Graphics cards. Are the Pro Cards a waste of money? Any insight would be very helpful. By Ryan Reid - Has anyone tried this? ?I'm curious, I have been requested to come up with a solution that provides 2-3 Mac Pro Workstations with at least 250MB/s drive access for my editorial dept. ?I would like to re-use my MD3000i boxes since their current set-up is flawed, but I wondered if anyone had done this, or had any benchmarks on this.

Also would I need to go SAN, or would an XSERVE running AFS/NFS share attached to the iSCSI work also?

Thanks in advance.
