By Robert Moggach -

I'm having issues with Deadline 5.1 on fedora and running Maya 2011 renders using their MayaCmd or MayaBatch... I've looked through the python and can't find the issue. It seems it's trying to launch maya but without X it segfaults. Has anyone troubleshooted this and got it running? Nuke is running smoothly. thanks, Rob

Avocent Network KVM Alternatives

By Jean Phillip Baysari -

Hello!

So we recently tested out 2 Avocent HMX 1070 Network KVM's (http://www.avocent.com/Products/Category/KVM_Appliances/IP_Appliances/HMX_Digital_KVM_over_IP.aspx) on a production server used for finalizing shots (1 KVM per DVI output, for maximum video performance).? The server is 2 floors beneath the workstation controlling it via the KVM's.? After a few days of testing, the producers were not satisfied with the responsiveness of the setup.? They noticed very slight cursor lag and believed that video playback was stuttering and/or experiencing too much latency.? We've worked with Avocent support and configured the unit for max performance, but it was not enough to satisfy the powers that be.

Therefore, I would like to know if anyone has any alternative suggestions for an Avocent-like setup.? It's a shame because the reason we chose Avocent is because it was very highly recommended.? Ultimately, we need the alternative solution to be able to playback 1080p video in real-time, with no loss in video signal/quality and the absolute lowest latency possible.? Of course, the idea of running 2 DVI cables that use fiber (such as these: http://www.dvigear.com/fiopca.html) came across our minds, but it would be such a pain in the ass to run those cables through 2 floors!?

Any better solutions out there that you have any experience with?? If so, please do share!

Thanks!
JP

Best remote desktop application (cross platform)?

Hey guys,

We're looking for collaboration/demonstration software that'll hold up as well as possible over LA > London, London > India type latencies.

VNC's fine but obviously lacks fancy stuff like voice. Skype seems ancient on Linux WebEx I tried to sign up for a trial but their site's really flakey at the moment and I've had little success on Linux in the past TeamViewer seems good so far in tests.

Anything else anyone's tried and works well? Open source and/or free is obviously a plus, but we're open to paying for something that works well.

Ardome content format

By Jack Wenzinger -

Open question

I'm working with some content that is an MXF wrapped AviD DNxHD file straight out of Ardome system but we can't seem to open it??

Are there any special tools that would allow us to access the MXF outside of an Ardome system? Is this just a function of exporting the files correctly from Ardome??

We get mxf wrapped DV files on a daily basis from an Ardome sytem and have no troubles at all.?

I suspect that Ardome just does some slight changes that are easily changed to be supported in standard systems.

Any insight is appreciated.

Cheers,

Jack

OS X Lion and HDMI 1.4a '3D TV'

Has anyone had any success convincing late-model Mac hardware and OS X Lion to output frame-packaged HDMI 1.4a stereo? We've tried butchering the EDID using SwithResX to add a frame-packed resolution but Lion isn't having it.

Alternatively, has anyone hands-on experience with the Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D Thunderbolt box??

We'd love to hear how people have made this work.

Cheers,

Paul

Best remote desktop application

By Doug Mielke -

Have a look at Bomgar.
bomgar . com

Self contained, no 3rd party server so very secure.

Access from simple desktop view > full system access > remote, unsupervised
Folks at the other end can manage the degree of access you have.

In temporary instances, it self-uninstalls at the end of a session.
Nothing left over.

I have used in the past and is very solid / flexible.

cheers

Linux Testing and Benchmarking

Hey there, I've been doing some research about a general testing/benchmarking tool or set of tools for Linux and found the Phoronix Test Suite. It has a lot of data for benchmarks comparison paired with quite an exhaustive list of testing/benchmarking tool including some of the classics (e.g. iozone).

Anybody tried it?

LTO Tar Options

0

By Anonymous -

We're primarily a Mac-based facility and lately have been getting requests to do TAR based LTO5 backups from studios with specific requirements for the blocking factor, the number of filemarks per tape, and an MD5 accompanying each archive. The data's large enough to span multiple tapes so I've been using Tolis Tape Group's Tape Tools to interface with the tape drive and library but I'm not thrilled with it.

We're looking to move to something more stable and with better support. I looked into Cache-A but they don't offer an option to change blocking factor or meet our specific requirements. I'm thinking about using a Linux-based solution as there doesn't seem to be any other options for Mac.?What do you guys use??

Hello,

We have a lot of artists wanting to use After Effects on the render farm but making sure any fonts they need to use are installed on all of the nodes is turning into a problem.

I’m just wondering how everyone else manages to deal with this in a mixed windows/OSX environment.

Thanks

Ben

Macro help

By Saham Ali -

Hey guys,

Was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction. I?haven't?touched macros since?Macromedia?director.

We have the need to click play or even pass a command to play to Stereoscopic player, while at the same time click "start" on a application that drives our motion simulator. ?Syncing the two is the challenge.

We are in a windows environment, and I cant seem to find anything that can do this for us.
Our basic setup is a computer that is connected to our sim via a USB cable. ?The computer has software that starts the playback of pre recorded motion. ?The same program has the ability to play back standard 2D video footage, but does not have the?carnality?to play back stereoscopic footage. ?This is where we need stereoscopic player.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
