Wacom 5 over KVM

By Quinn Richardson -
Running into a little issue with using Wacom 5's over think logical KVM.

More specifics:
Running multiple systems (mac and linux) over thinklogical velocitykvm-4's
Wacom 4 works and on the mac the control panel sees the tablet.
As soon as you plug in a wacom 5 the control panel will tell you that no supported tablet is connected.
Linux side not really giving us any feedback.
Anyone else run into this or have a solution?
Thanks.

Isilon SmartConnect via a CNAME / alias?

$

By Rob LaRose -

Howdy!

Just getting started using Isilon's "smart connect" (load-balancing) feature.  Looks to me like all we're doing is making the isilon its own subdomain, with its own NS, answering lookups as configured by policy.

My question -- is anyone using a CNAME with theirs?  Example:

Isilon SmartConnect hostname is SC-ISILONROB.domain.com

AD DNS subdomain ISILONROB.domain.com, with NS record SC-ISILONROB.domain.com

I send my users to //GOHERE/share1/

Any red flags with this configuration?

HDD cloning for distribution of DCPs

$

By Gareth Havard - Hi All,

I've been searching for a solution for industrious cloning of encrypted distribution master HDDs.

We are being contracted to create and manage DCP distribution, which will initially be a run of 30 USB HDDs.
The drives will be EXT3 formatted, so a Linux solution is preferable.

As a 2D feature is only about 1GB per min, there's nothing stopping me assigning an operator/engineer to copy the DCP folder and paste into each HDD, mounting and copying 1 at a time (no real time pressure for these).
That should be manageable, however I'm looking for something a little more automated with confirmation of integrity etc.

I'd be interested how the big boys do this? working with Technicolor (as a client) in the UK I noticed HDDs moving around by the pallet load!

Cheers!

Is anyone aware of any other method to convert a .ma to .fbx aside from the export plugin provided by autodesk?    Attempts at exporting a file results in lots of complaints in the logs.   We can't bake anything as the shop the file is heading to can not handle that.....

here is an example of the errors:

HDS SMU SSL configuration

$

By Mike Owen -
Hi,
Does anyone know the correct commands to install a CA veri-signed cert into the HDS SMU to enable SSL?
I was able to import the *.crt certificate file using:

./cert-importtrustchain.sh -p path to crt file -a unique alias

but the next command just won't work:

./cert-import.sh -p path to my cert file

Error Message:
keytool error: java.lang.Exception: Public keys in reply and keystore don't match
Failed to import the certificate.
The backed up keystore has been restored.
Please try again or use cert-gendefault.sh to restore the default cert.

The manual?doesn't?give much information on how to remove the default certificate/key within the SMU, so I?can?replace it with my own one.

As usual HDS support is slow....(official HDS instructions below...)
I have *.pfx, *.pem, *.crt, *.key files

Mike

Installing certificates
After obtaining the certificate from the certificate authority (CA):
1. Copy the certificate provided by the CA to the SMU (for example, scp to /home/manager/server.cer).
If necessary, provide the certificate authority?s trusted certificate chain as a file (for example, /home/manager/
veritas.pem). The SMU already includes popular certificate authority trust chains, so this step can typically
be skipped. To display these popular certificate authorities, see Sun?s documentation: http://java.sun.com/
j2se/1.5.0/docs/tooldocs/solaris/keytool.html#cacerts
Note: The content of the certificate and trust chain files should only start with -----BEGIN and end
with -----END CERTIFICATE-----.
2. Log in to the SMU as user manager.
3. Enter sudu cert-importtrustchain.sh -p path to trust chain file -a unique
alias to import the certificate authority trust certificate chain (optional); this might require multiple files or
chains, so repeat as necessary. When prompted, enter the password for user manager.
Note: Any unique alias may be used. If the alias already exists in the SMU?s keystore, you will be
prompted to replace the old certificate or cancel the import.
An example intermediate certificate authority trust chain may be found at: http://www.verisign.com/support/
install2/intermediate.html
4. Enter sudo cert-import.sh -p path to cert file to import the signed certificate reply.
This replaces the default SMU SSL certificate.
5. Restart the web server when prompted so that it can pick up the new SSL certificate. When prompted to overwrite
the existing certificate, enter y.
6. Close and restart any browsers used to connect to the SMU.
This is required to purge the browser of any previously negotiated SSL session values.
When logging into the SMU Web Manager, the new SSL Certificate is provided.
7. As needed, enter sudo cert-showall.sh to display and verify the contents (SSL certificate and trust chain)
of the keystore.
8. To propagate the new certificate to all managed servers, navigate to Home > SMU Administration > Managed
Servers, and click details and OK for each server.

OT - Need new light bulbs

By Brian Krusic - ... simply have to share.

An artist (used very loosely) comes to me and asks for more RAM.

I ask why of course and was told that the server gave them a premision denied when trying to save out a file.

I replied "pffft, you need a new light bulb".

I did then explain our job structure with do's and don'ts.

However in my youth which doesn't seem that long ago, never do I recall being so off on cause and effect.

Data center network with limited uplink speed best practises

$

By Antti Pennanen - Hey everybody, Our client is running a HP Blade and VmWare based environment. The interconnects between blades are 1gbit (6 interconnects in total). For the network traffic there are 2 switches in an active-active HA configuration. The uplink is 100mbit/s and all the traffic is routed through VRRP to a StoneGate firewall which then does nat or forwards the traffic to the correct VLAN. Today our monitoring noticed that some of the services were down so we started to investigate the problem. We soon noticed that the uplink is basically completely saturated and that is the reason for the weird network behaviour. Later we found out that the root cause was a malware on one of the virtual machines which was sending huge amount of DNS traffic out. (350mbit/s, which obviously couldn't get through) I started thinking that is there any best practises to avoid this kind of situations? So that one VM (or any network client) couldn't completely saturate the uplink. Anyone here experience of this kind of network problems? Flow-Control? QoS? Any ideas are welcome and thanks in advance! Andy To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe
