Sync folder files by date

By Jack Wenzinger - I'm sure I'm not the first to tackle this and hoping one of you know a utility or have a Mac script off the cuff.

I'm using a cloud service to place files so that they can be shared between systems. ? I would like a utility on these local systems that would automatically place new files that are being worked on locally into the sync folder and allow for files that are past the work in process window to be copied out and removed from the sync folder system.

Thanks,
Jack

anyone have an iperf server I can test against for a bit?

Trouble shooting an internet issue and want to confirm some things.  I'd need it for about 20 minutes and would do about 3-4 runs against it.   Only requirement is you have more than a 10 megabit connection.  100 or 1000 would be nice but not necessary for what I'm attempting to prove.

or if you happen to know of any public ones that would be great.

thanks much,
greg

Is anyone using Isilon's "ignore-chmods" configuration for OSX + NFS?

So Isilon's provided us with some magic beans that cause the cluster to pay lip service to chmods while actually just ignoring them.  This effectively end-runs the problem where Finder, Textedit, and some other Apple stuff was defeating ACL inheritance by re-permissioning after a copy/save.

Has anyone else had this same tweak applied?  If so, did it break anything else?  Before I turn users loose on this thing I want to make sure I'm not boiling myself...

LTO archive with deduplication

By Mathew Power -

Hi,

Can anyone recommend an archive tool with supports incremental archiving. We are currently using presstore which works great for backups, for archiving its a bit primitive. We would like to be able to archive part of a job to tape. Then restore it, make a few (or even no) changes. Then when we archive it again at the end of the project have it not archive what's already on tape.

We are using stornext for our filesystem and have looked into storage manager which looks perfect for this but costs a fortune.

If anyone could suggest something that would be great!

Cheers,
Mat

Option Verify in a LTO archiving/backup software

$

By Xavier Brachet - Hi All,

For several years I've been using a Netvault software to backup and archive data on LTO-2 and now on LTO-5.

Thereisanoptioninthissoftwaretoverify” that the written data is perfectly written on tapes
However the archiving time with this option is twice as long...!

But I recently read this article: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_Tape-Open)

Error detection and correction

The tape drives use a strong error correction algorithm that makes data recovery possible when lost data is within one track.[62] Also, when data is written to the tape it is verified by reading it back using the read heads that are positioned just 'behind' the write heads. This allows the drive to write a second copy of any data that fails the verify without the help of the host system.

Is it really necessary to select this option in a LTO archiving/backup software?

Thanks and regards.

SSA LA Event Reminder

By Anthony Lopez - Hey Everyone,

This is just a reminder about the SSA event at RFX this thursday.? We have all the major storage vendors showing up and they are ready to listen to the group and address any questions we may have about products or service.? It should be just as informative as the render management event we had.? If the topic doesn't interest you then come by for some good food, drinks and to socialize with other members in our community.

Please rsvp so we know how much food and drinks to provide.

I look forward to seeing you all this Thursday.

Directory service user creation/modification in the hands of HR?

$

By Bryce Evans -
Has anyone successfully passed off user/group management via directory services (specifically?AD) to HR?

For instance, right now when a freelancer comes in HR creates a ticket that goes to IT that has employee name, position, and group permissions, and we add the user in AD manually.

We use a very simple grouping setup, of staff (local admin, global read), freelance (access only to assigned project folders) accounting, and engineering.?

The question is, why am I managing this? Why can't this be done via an HR web interface, that allows them limited access for creating new users and assigning them a group??Obviously?access would have to be limited so they can't go around creating domain admins everywhere, but it doesn't seem like this is a weird request, after all they handle hiring, payroll and accounting issues, is user security really more important than the company finances?

I've googled for "active directory web interface" but frankly they all look sketchy or like they were developed in the 90s and never touched again. Obviously I'd prefer something open source, and packaged so I don't have to develop it myself.

Any suggestions, or glaring problems with this theory are welcome?

typically doesn't work unless you have a lot of the back end scripted very solidly.

accounts are needed on various things (services) depending on the department they are joining,  yes the authentication will work for most,  but many do not support using a directory to get all the details,  such as service admin,  software entitlements,    etc...    It can be made to work but not without a lot of coding effort on your end first,  and it will break and you will be involved in many of the account set ups inevitably regardless.  that is unless you are some super star coder (i'm not,  and i speak from my own experiences).

I recently started using AD groups in our sudoer's file,  thought that was a win.     so while you can reduce a lot of the leg work,  its questionable if you could totally take it off your table.   but every shop is different,  perhaps yours isn't as chaotic as ours.  8)    for us,  adding a user to the AD and setting some attrubuites while doing so will allow a user to log into windows,  collect mail,  log into unix machiens,  mount home dirs on both OSs',  allow you to log into some services (for example on ESX the TDs can create new vms but that is about it,  they can't adjust resources or select the VLAN the machine will live in),  and hit many web services served out by Apache.    We still have to create them an account in some of our pipeline tools,  and on the development wiki/ticket system (which we could address but haven't...)   It won't integrate into our security / card access system either.

another factor to consider is,  once all this is set up and you do have the magical 'one stop shop',  the question becomes,  is it worth pushing to HR and dealing with a different skill set if all I have to do is create the account (first, last, department, groups)?  I'd say no and keep it in our group if i had automated it that far along.    its nice to know who is joining the team,  and leaving.  8)

you can write a power shell script they (or you) ran which would do all this,  wouldn't even need to be a web based thing.  double click the icon on your desktop,   it starts asking you for information.    probably a bucket load of scripts out there already to create accounts and drop them into desired groups.

DST and EST

Just an FYI incase you end up pounding your head when Daylight Savings Time starts or ends:

So DST started here in the US a week or so ago. ?All of our machines are synced to an internal NTP server so no problems there. ?But one of our CentOS VM's was set up with the time zone set to EST and not New York. ?Turns out EST refers to Eastern Standard Time?literally?meaning that when EST switches to EDT (as happened on March 10), the machine failed to spring forward that extra hour and instead remained on EST. ?Once I switched the zone to New York it recognized the daylight savings switch and nudged up an hour. ?

to check:
ls -l /etc/localtime;

to fix:
rm -f /etc/localtime;
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime

XML status from Pixel Farm license server

$

By Jean-Francois Panisset - While we're endlessly kvetching about licensing schemes, here's one piece of good news I just learned: the Pixel Farm PFLic system doesn't provide a command line utility to query the status of the license server, but the documentation shows that it exports a HTML status page: http://your_license_server:8071 So I wrote an HTML screen scraper to extract the license information from the page. What I learned today is that there's an undocumented way to get the license server to output XML-formatted status: http://your_license_server:8071/status.xml This is actually much better than parsing the arbitrary text output of lmutil/rlmutil Time to amend my "licensing scheme wish list" to include XML / YAML / whatever structured output method as a desirable (required?) feature. I hadnt heard of it till today but sounds like basically its a box with a bunch of GPU's that will give you?centralized?VDI for small shops that dont want to spend on?individual?workstations.
