Hi all,

I have a customer located in Toronto with an immediate requirement for a 4-post rack.  Could be either a half rack or full height.  Square holes preferred, but round would be acceptable.

Please contact me directly off list if you have one available to sell right away.

Thanks!

NAB; Hits and misses

By Brian Krusic - Dobro dan,

While I wasn't at NAB, in fact last time I was at trade show was Siggraph 2006, I did hear a few interesting things.

A seemingly big hit in my mind was Foundrys purchase of Modo.  This is indeed fantastic as Foundry is such a solid software company and they truly understand our workflow, mentality and needs.

Imagine, Modos smooth integration with Nuke, enhanced to run faster and being the mo-graphers tool of choice.

Then there is further detailing what benefits Hiero brings to our pipeline.

All these tools have a huge impact on infrastructure as they are really all parts of one large seemingly living organism.

The implications are exciting.

Then there was Autodesk, well.... umm.... not so much.  Anyways...

A brief analogy of my point.

Back in 05' ish Clark Foam closed shop in rather Draconian fashion.  At that time, ~95% of all foam blanks world wide used as the core of surf boards were made by Clark Foam.

While speculation was high as to this seemingly ruthless act, the 2 main rumors were;

1) He lost his mind.
2) He wanted to force a paradigm shift in the surf industry.

Since then, a rich field of materials has emerged to replace the traditional foam blank.  As a result, newer more radical designs/shapes/wights are now being seen that up the fun factor for surfers.

Is it time for this to happen in the field of animation apps?

I will say one thing for paradigm shifts, they force you to rethink the status quo.

A personal example relating to our industry was BlueArcs demise.  Prior to that, i was happy to have one for the rest of my profession.  Just keep upgrading BlueArc to BlueArc etc...

But I was forced to look at options and realized how truly important it is to deconstruct your views and ideologies on a regular basis, keeps you fresh and relevant.

Dell R720 + H710P NV 1GB cache + 3rd party SSD's

Has anyone got a similar setup to this working?

Dell R720 + H710P 1GB cache RAID card + 3rd party SSD's - such as OCZ/Intel/Samsung SATA 3 drives working as both the main storage but also as the Dell re-branded LSI cachecade virtual volume as a read-only cache?

The web has many stories of Dell actively blocking 3rd party SSD's back in 2010, then public outcry, then firmware updates opening it all up, and now crazy pricing for low capacity SSD's driect from Dell.

Anyone gone renegade with a Dell box and bought themselves some 3rd party SSD's and some empty caddies from China?

Is anyone using Pixar's Tractor?

If so,  are you running it on bare metal or VM?  I'd like to know if it is reasonable to run it in a VM with SSD drives.  There would be about 400 physical HPC nodes and 200 or so artist workstations talking to it.

their supported platform page is fairly sparse with no mentioning of actual recommended requirements.  Perhaps I'm not reading in the proper spots.

OSX 10.7, Maya 2013, Shave/Haircut 7.0 and V-Ray

By Aled Jones -
Has anyone with the above combination had any issues rendering with V-Ray.  I have just installed Shave 7.0 on OSX 10.7.4, running Maya 2013 and V-ray 2.30.01.

It all works fine, until I try rendering using V-Ray,  I get errors related to the V-Ray plugin and the hair does not render. On the exact same install setup but a Windows 7 box it works fine.  My thoughts are right now that the OSX install of Shave didn't install the related V-Ray plug-ins as I see shave related files under V-Ray on Windows 7, but not on OSX.  Waiting for Shave's support to get back to me, but thought I'd see if anyone on here had come across this setup and issue?

Thanks!

dash (pixar's tractor)

By David Laur - When we were looking at the dash issue, in the tractor daemon start-up scripts, I was surprised to learn that dash also ships with recent Red Hat now as well, although it is not a replacement for classic /bin/sh as it is on Ubuntu. It doesn't seem to be part of RHEL5, but new in RHEL6. a rationale: a remarkably short wikipedia entry: a thread of rants, starting six years ago: On Apr 16, 2013, at 8:55 AM, Jimmy Christensen wrote: > On Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 4:30 PM, Shane McEwan wrote: >> Rant 2: Ubuntu, why do you ship with dash? DS_Store files (again)

$

By Antti Pennanen - Hey everybody, We've been fighting with DS_Store files related problems on a mixed NAS / SAN environment for a while now. We found a way (tested) to disable creation of them on both SAN and NAS clients but still the files keep appearing to the shared storage. I finally figured out why. You could imagine that running the following command on terminal would stop macs generating garbage: > defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true Well, this is the case when you CREATE files on the network share. But as soon as you copy an existing folder from your desktop, the DS_Store files appear to the network server. Now, I don't know if this is a bug or a feature, but I can't think any reason why it should work like this. Does anyone have any tips how to prevent this from happening for good? Thanks in advance! PyQT and Maya issues on Mac OSX 10.8.2

$

By Francisco Lima -
Hello guys!

We're currently using Maya on Mac Pro Workstations on OSX 10.8.2 but we're facing several issues when trying to load the interface of the tools we are developing in?PyQT?withing Maya.
The Maya menu disappears and it then crashes.

Maya does recognise?PyQt.

We are pointing Maya to the Qt site dir using "site.addsitedir" and that works fine.

Maya even loads whole PyQt4 module.

The issue is when we try to load the QtCore and QtGui modules to access our Application interface.

?Maya generates:

"ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/PyQt4/_qt.so, 2): Symbol not found: _PyCapsule_Type"

If we load these modules stand alone in the system they work fine. This just happens when loading through Maya.

This may be due to a mismatch between 32 and 64bit versions of Qt.

The solution would be to compile a 64bit only version of ?PyQt?for Mac and try to load it through Maya.

If this works we could then re-distribute this custom compile of?PyQt?to the other VFX machines so they can load our tools with no issues.

Any of you having similar issues or have any ideas of how to solve this?

Best Rdgds

Hey,

Is anyone out there using Strawberry ? What kind of san/nas do you have behind it? Size, specs of the system? How many editors? etc etc!

Is anyone using the storage by Rorke Data behind it? Seems like the perfect situation where you would roll your own storage for it and save $... (as is always the case on first look)

PFTrack 2013.2.1 vs Windows Firewall

By Jean-Francois Panisset -
Don't know if this is specific to our site, but I'm finding that if you try to install the recently released PFTrack 2013.2.1 on a Windows 7 system where the Windows Firewall service is not running, the installation will fail and roll back, without any useful error messages. You have to temporarily start the Windows Firewall service in order to allow the installation (or uninstallation as well) to complete.

Was amused to find out that the only way to get MSI to generate a log file of its actions is to create a Windows registry entry...

By Jeremy Mullis -

We have 2 AT&T microcells and they help a little but seem to drop calls randomly. We tried a 3rd party booster before that was spotty and needed to reboot frequently.  Has anyone found a decent solution other than switching everyone to another carrier?

Thanks in advance,

Sorry for lurking,

Too many writes to server (vray/exr/deadline)

By Matt Daly - I am looking for a way to reduce the load on the file server while rendering. Before I start writing a python script to write local temp files and then copy them to the server when complete, I am wondering if there may be a simpler solution out there. The software is vray for maya, and we are running deadline.

By Anthony Hoit - Server down. Completely non responsive and won't post. So I start troubleshooting hardware and make it all the way down to removing the CPU2 and it's ram. Taking a look at the CPU, I see this... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gn3qthzc69ffgfg/-LZ1QEjntN 2 Years it ran like this! Until this morning. Once it was removed, it fires right back up. clusterssh / cssh for CentOS 6?

By Klaus Steden - Oof. My dev chops aren't what they used to be ... has anyone got a version of clusterssh 3.x working for CentOS 6? I'm running into all sorts of weird problems with Tk, and v4 looks like a nightmare of Perl dependencies. [fast forward one hour] So, all of the Perl dependencies got resolved cleanly, the package built and installed, and I'm running into the same error that made v3 fail on the same system: -- cut -- shell$ cssh bad pad value "3m": must be positive screen distance at /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/Tk/Widget.pm line 1218. at /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/Tk/Widget.pm line 203 -- cut -- ... sigh. Has anyone seen this before? More importantly, has anyone solved this particular conundrum before? cheers, Klaus To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe
