By Francis Provencher -
Hi everyone,

We will be organizing a SSA Meeting in Montreal soon and as to make it as successful as possible, we decided to post a little  poll to see what people in Montreal are interested in.

Quick notes:
- It is very quick with only 1 page and 5 questions, so you won't loose too much time there.
- You can always choose more than one answer.

Please only fill this if you are in the Montreal area or planning to attend a meeting in the Montreal area:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/T22JCV6

Let's make it a very popular one!

Francis

PS: Pour les francophones, j'ai utilis? l'anglais par d?faut pour plus de simplicit?, veuillez noter cependant que le meeting sera surement bilingue pour couvrir une plus grande audience. // For the French speaking people, I used English for simplicity, please note that the meeting will most likely be held in both French and English to reach a broader audience.

What services would you guys recommend? He'll need it to be secure so that only himself and the client can access it. Preferably we'd be looking for something that is low cost, maybe pay per use rather than a subscription. By John Burton -

So, I don’t think it’s been mentioned on the SSA list yet, but this is happening tomorrow (Saturday) in Vancouver:

http://vesvancouver.com/events/ves-career-fair-2013/

Anyone heading down?  I’m currently looking for work in the Vancouver area, (gaming, visual effects, or related fields) and was wondering if many of the Vancouver SSAs have been before.  Wondering about people’s take on the event if they’ve been in previous years, and maybe some things they’re hoping to see more of (or less of) this year.

Thanks,

John

I had some conversations with these guys at NAB, apparently they don’t have much penetration into media and entertainment but are keen to get into the market. Has anyone had any experience with their stuff? My thought, should the price be right, is possibly for uncompressed playback for grading suites. Less spindles (none), smaller rack space requirement etc. they said we should be able to run whatever file system we want and could connect through whatever our existing infrastructure is (8GB Fiber).

SFP vendor trix

By Greg Whynott -

I swear there was a time when you could grab any SFP and use it without much thought or problems.

Then all of a sudden it seemed like Cisco decided  you couldn't use other peoples SFP's in their kit.   and 3 minutes later it seemed as if the rest of the industry followed suite.

forgive my ignorance but in my mind there is power applied to a few legs of the SFP and magically a diode lights up emitting light of a certain wave length.

One night after driving into work at 11PM and being there for 4 hours it was obvious the problem was a failed SFP.     I finally convinced the TAC guy (after he mistakenly hinted about it) to give me the _magical_ command to force the 6509e switch to not care about the brand name of the SFP.     I had other long range ones on hand but they were for the Nortel switches and made by finisar.

he did and to my knowledge 6 years later that same SFP is in service.

whats with all this vendor hate...  it causes us admins so much grief.   Its even sadder when you consider there are not may shops that make SFPs and most every vendor SFP is a re-branded finisar or similar.

today I went to put a Dell SFP into a Dell switch and was met with this message:

storageswitch#show int tengigabitethernet 0/46
TenGigabitEthernet 0/46 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is DellForce10Eth, address is 00:01:e8:8b:a0:a0
    Current address is 00:01:e8:8b:a0:a0
Non-qualified pluggable media present, SFP+ type is 10GBASE-SR
    Medium rate is unknown, Wavelength is 850nm
    SFP+ receive power reading is -35.2288dBm

super *sigh*...   yes I realize the merger is recent...   didn't take them to long to get their name/logo on everything else tho:

storageswitch>show ver

while pee'n in all corners to ensure everyone knew who was who,  perhaps also modify that check code?

anyway this isn't a Dell hate thing,  Dell has been a great experience for us thus far,  everyone is doing it,  its just the latest of many hurdles and brought back bad memories.

ok..  anyone know what the magical 'don't care what SFP you are using" command is for Force10 products?  8)

Maya 2013.5 RPM based install

$

By Todd Smith -
Hey guys,

Just spent a week with ADSK support trying to sort out why their RPM based install is borked.

Here's my notes should you guys come across this

1.  Licensechooser is broken in 2013.5 DO NOT USE IT for an RPM based setup.  Using it will generate an incorrect License.env file that apparently only works if you use "setup".
2.  If you are a floating license customer with your license already in /var/flexlm/maya.lic simply open the file /usr/autodesk2013.5-x64/bin/License.env and change the contents from:

AUTODESK_ADLM_THINCLIENT_ENV=$MAYA_LOCATION/Licensing/AdlmThinClientCustomEnv.xml
SYNHUB_CONFIG_PATH=<SYNCFG_DIR>
MAYA_LICENSE=unlimited
MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD=network

To:

MAYA_LICENSE=unlimited

MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD=network

3.  If you've already installed 2013, don't bother running adlmreg.

Oh yeah, and if you haven't started looking at Maya 2014 yet, they changed how they did licensing yet again.

Isilon OneFS alert

By Michael Oliver -
I'm sure those of you that have Isilon get the regular technical advisories but this one just popped up and it seemed pretty important so I'm forwarding along. ?Basically if you are using NFS, running OneFS 6.5.17 or lower, and using AD/LDAP you should read it. ?If your client has a user lookup through AD/LDAP and it times out on the node, and that node has been up for 9 months, the entire cluster could potentially lockup. ?Wonder why 248 days? ?Fix has been implemented in 6.5.18 which is what we are running....phew.

Question:ETA emc317523: [UPDATE] OneFS 6.5: Isilon nodes with over nine months of uptime in clusters with NFS enabled might cause a cluster-wide deadlock.
Environment:EMC Technical Advisory
Environment:
Date

February 21, 2013

[UPDATE]

April 24, 2013

Products affected

Isilon clusters running OneFS 6.5.x that support NFS clients

Problem:
Update

This ETA has been updated and corrected as follows:

A fix is now available.
This issue can affect clusters with NFS enabled, not only those with NFSv4 enabled.
This issue can affect nodes that exceed 248 consecutive days of uptime, not 288 days.
Issue

EMC has become aware of an issue where, in certain situations, clusters might become non-responsive. Specifically, OneFS 6.5 clusters that support NFS may experience a cluster-wide lockup when a node performs a user lookup through Active Directory or LDAP on a client's behalf and the lookup times out.

If the node performing the lookup has exceeded nine months of uptime (that is, over 248 days with no downtime), it could cause the entire cluster to eventually lock up and become unresponsive to user requests.

Although there is no risk of data loss due to this issue, data availability will be impaired.

Fix:
Solution

This issue is fixed in OneFS 6.5.5.18. However, EMC recommends that you upgrade to OneFS 6.5.5.20 to take advantage of additional improvements.

NOTE
There is no fix planned for OneFS 6.5.4. EMC recommends that clusters running OneFS 6.5.4 be upgraded to OneFS 6.5.5.20.

Fix:
Workaround

If upgrading is not an option, and if any node in your cluster has been running for more than 248 days with no downtime, you can avoid this issue by performing a rolling reboot of all nodes in the cluster.

Fix:
Isilon internal only

Fixing a locked-up cluster

If a customer calls with a locked-up cluster, first validate that they have encountered this issue. Ensure that:

the cluster has NFS enabled, and
at least one node on the cluster has an uptime over 248 days.
If both conditions are true, a full cluster reboot is required. See How to reboot nodes and clusters in OneFS 5.5 and later, emc14002278.
