Our HP Z800 has just legacy stereo analog audio connections - i need TOSLINK/S/SDIF 5.1 as optical, coax or both.  Anyone have a recommendation for a card or low-latency external interface?  OS is CentOS 6.2 w/alsa-1.0.22-5

  • 05/16/13--12:10: Rack Blanking Panels
  • By Dave Young -

    hey guys;

what do you like for modern blanking panels? been using these snap-in 1U APC jobbies -- they're cheaper than the metal ones that you screw in (from monoprice anyway). have you guys got a favorite thing?

back when i was at the mill we used this paperish stuff that you could rip off to size and clip in with these little plastic doohickies... can't find the product online anymore (Tyron Turner, Steve Smallwood -- if you're reading this....).

i've got nearly a whole panel i want to blank and while i could easily cut up the boxes my isilon just shipped in, they're not exactly attractive, or reusable, or great heat reflectors or, or, or....

    Sounds like good advice.

And if the powers that be say that's still too expensive,
deploy a few of these beauties on the desktops and see what happens:

  • 05/19/13--14:35: Intel cache acceleration
  • By Matt Daly - Has anyone used this? Any idea on the pricing? Although they certify it on intel SSD's they say it is SSD agnostic. I guess it was a product by NEVEX, recently aquired by intel.

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/software/intel-cache-acceleration-software.html

It seems our biggest bottleneck is the compers reading the files from the server. Since most of those files were recently rendered by 3d artists, I would expect a lot of cache hits.

    Good day all,

We are running a Win 2k3 server environment in our facility with a few Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) storage servers, but mostly Win servers.

On the current Ubuntu samba shares are only a few users with their own security policies.

I want to join the the Ubuntu boxes to the domain and integrate samba file sharing.

What is the best way of doing this? I’ve did research, is Kerberos, samba and winbind the only way of doing this, or is there an easier way of doing this?

BluPort Kickstarter - Just skimmed the site but have not browsed the tech details. ?Seems like a good idea though for USB encryption coupled with a phone for two factor auth. ?Could be very useful for sending drives around / onset drives.

Anyone know a trick for extracting from a tar file starting at a known byte-offset inside the file?

I've got a very large (>1TB) .tar created by Time Navigator and the regular restore methods aren't working.  I've dd'ed the tapefile off, but since the file i want is 600GB deep, it takes a long-ass time to even TRY extracting it.

I have the byte offset from the TiNa catalog, so does anyone know a trick for cutting right to the chase & not having to read the first 600GB?

With our active shows growing and our inactive shows still needing room because of restores etc, we seem to be fighting for space on a daily basis. We send our stuff to LTO on a nightly basis via prestore so the physical act of archiving is working fine.

I'd like know what are some of the ways you calculate your storage growth ie. what tools are used for space analysis, and how you manage your data on a daily basis.

    Thanks,

I have a mixed bag of 44RU equipment racks up for grabs. I have one APC NetShelter rack (square hole, four post with no side panels). Three Middle Atlantic MRK4431 (round holes, some have side panels and doors). And four no-name 44RU racks (round hole, some have side panels).

The racks are all in decent to good shape. I am willing to part with the APC and the no-names for free but I'm like to get something for the Middle Atlantic racks. Any reasonable offer will be fine. The racks have been sitting in our parking lot for a few weeks, so they are a little dirty.

The racks are available in Los Angels for pickup. Please contact me off list if you are interested.

  • 05/23/13--10:05: power cables on monoprice
  • By Michael Oliver -

I bought some 16AWG C13/C14 power cables off monoprice the other day to hook up some new equipment to our 208V PDU's. ?I overlooked the fact that Monoprice states on their website 10A 125V as I was under the impression C13/C14's were 100-250V compatible. ?Just checked IEC 60320 and sure enough?the C13/C14 connectors are not coded for voltage.

Cables arrived and have a tag stating 13A 125V but the rating stamped on the actual cable says 300V 60degreesC (pretty standard). ?The only reason I can think of for Monoprice stating 125V is that the connectors they put on the cables are shitty (which would explain the incredibly low price). ?

Experience and everything I have read is telling me these cables are more than adequate for a 208V load of a couple amps but I wanted to see if anyone else had any insight.

So yesterday I took about 15 minutes of my time to file a ticket with a vendor who shall remain nameless (since they are otherwise quite good) detailing an enhancement request I felt would bring value to their product.

The response: oh, you can't file enhancement requests here, this is strictly support, you have to talk to your account rep for that, here's a complicated and vague process on how to do this, now go away and don't bother us.

Don't want to take myself too seriously, but if I decide to take time paid for by my employer to put together a semi-intelligible enhancement request, as a vendor you should at least have the courtesy of saying "thank you very much, we'll add it to the list", even if you then proceed to just delete it. At least I would be under the illusion that I didn't completely waste my time.

Well to be honest you filed an enhancement request with support, and tier 1 support at that.

If you truly want to get through to someone about a product you need to talk much higher up the chain.  I would start by asking your sales representative to put you in touch with someone that could make this conversation a reality.  Almost all sales reps I've dealt with are more than happy to do this, and I myself have had great success in parlaying my enhancement request discussions into a more meaningful relationship with my vendors.

I've done the same thing though, I get my morning coffee, see some inefficiencies in a process and reply to a support ticket outlining why this is bad.  Only to realize this will never see the light of day.  I should really go AFK when drinking coffee sometimes ...

    Cheers,

  • 05/23/13--11:20: Quadro K5000 (Wow)
  • By Bill Heiden - Just set up two machines for an art installation. Both machines each have two K5000 cards and five monitors connected. Playing off a SSD drive, each machine is capable of rates of 260 FPS (1080p) per monitor. I'm blown away.

    Just a heads up,
For some reason one of the brilliant minds at Nvidia thought it would be a great Idea to make the latest Geforce 320.18 driver installer REQUIRE you to be connected to the internet to install the driver!!!
Even when you have the installer on the local drive, it requires you to have internet to proceed through the installer.. Probably to have those ads displayed?during?the installation process...
    WTF is this nonsense?!

Been using get console app for awhile now on my iPad and iPhone.

They just came out with wireless dongle support ! Pretty awesome.
They have a complete connector pack really nice when you do not want to be stuck behind a rack or in the room at all.
