Anyone seeing a lot of Error -50 in OSX?

$

By Rob LaRose -

Over the last couple of months, I've started getting an annoying number of Firewire drives that while mounted, just stop being writable.  The app throws one error or another, but ultimately I find if I try to create a folder on the drive, Finder returns Error -50.

The drive is usually not unmountable at that point.  Force-unmount and re-mount and the drive comes up nicely again until the next time.

Disk Utility sees nothing wrong with the volume.

Too many different disks & manufacturers to blame it on new bad batch of hardware.  Sporadic and everywhere.

Anyone else seen this behavior of late?  We went to 10.7.5 a while back, I suppose it *could* be related...

Local keyboard/mouse control buggy on render engines, suggestions?

$

By Jeremy Lang -
Used our rental render engines drive image (Win7 Pro x64), but rentals went from X8 to X9 generation (E5 XeonV2).? Updated .inf file

Local keyboard and mouse input is buggy as hell, mouse often freezes for a second or so, especially after a click, keyboard sometimes inserts extra characters.?

I'd really prefer not to rebuild the image from scratch, especially since via remote control things seem fine, but the couple minutes of initial setup are a real PITA.?

Tried so far:

Installing .inf again (through intel chipset update, didn't seem to do anything, believe it recognized right .inf already installed).?

Different mouse, even without keyboard connected, same thing.? And connected to the always somewhat buggy kvm in server room, local control is basically impossible.?

Uninstalled mouse/keyboard in device manager, generic HID devices came back, same thing.?

Any ideas on how to clear this out (any utility to wipe chipset/USB drivers and re-install?) or similar experience??

Hello guys,
there was a thread about Lustre. Some of you were testing it. So I wanna ask have you gave it a go in production. We are trying it for one project, for now we do regular backups on a NFS server. So if anyone want to share some experience and talk about the pros and cons ...?

Cheers,

Running the cable at an awkward angle, so to speak. So this looks like our best bet

Isilon/EMC support renewal becoming punishing...

$

By Jeremy Lang -
We only have 100TB, and we got a great deal on it by buying re-certified, older nodes (w/ 1TB drives).? But that means we have 6 nodes plus an accelerator (to get 10gE) which is making support renewal pretty damn ridiculous for what we actually have--almost $20k, and that's with studio discount!?

Meanwhile, I can buy that capacity brand spanking new from QNAP (with high IOPS) for that price!? Seriously, just got a quote for ~50TB w/10gE for $11k and it's expandable!?

Anybody actually do Nexsan or another self contained scale-out upstart yet?? I do love scale-out for primary storage...

Are there per-incident options w/ Isilon?? I know just getting their damn proprietized drives is something like $1.1k...? Experiences??

Other suggestions?

Isilon free space question...

$

By Jeremy Lang -
Running 6.5.5.4, have snapshot feature.? Can't really contact support at the moment...

Space getting a bit low, we deleted some stuff, didn't free up space (no surprise) so I give it a week or two (snapshots max age 3 weeks) to make sure nothing's missed then I go in (web interface) and deleted all the large older snapshots last night.? Goes to delete pending, then they go away.? But the amount of space taken by snapshots (no reserve set) didn't go down and available space still hasn't gone up, 12 hours later.?

Existing snapshots shows a under 100GB in size on the remaining ones, but the summary screen still shows 3.9TB total snapshot size.?

(I love how the web interface never seems to quite work correctly, and it sounds like it continues to be no prize even in 7.)?

So am I missing anything?? Any ISI command to wake things up?? We have at least 3TB of capacity lost in the either somewhere...?

Leaving the industry

By Vincent Liggio - Just a quick note to let those who know me that I'm changing industries and will be dropping off the SSA list as of this evening. I've been involved with the 3D world since the early 90's so it's a bittersweet change, but it's the right one for me at this juncture in my career. Good luck everyone with the challenges (and great fun) that this industry brings! flame arching direct -> LTO vs nearline -> LTO...

By Paul Simpson -
hi all,

we've just had an LTO tape fail of a backup of a nearline flame archive. ?a 2d flame op stronly believes that the flame->nearline->LTO is fundamentally flawed and that we should put a LTO into every flame/smoke machine. ?

we're a old 3d shop with a new 2d flame/nuke section. ?

so, here's a few questions:
1/ what are you all doing for backups? ?direct to tape or nearline->tape? ?and can i ask why? ?legacy reasons or any other deciding factors...? ?does our 2d op have a point?
2/ how often to LTO tapes fail? ?would love to hear from you heavy users..
3/ do you always keep 2 copies on tape of all data? ?it seems this data only resides on one tape. ?i would have thought at least two tapes. ?tapes after all are cheap. ?data is expensive.

any other random thoughts / feelings or superstitions would be most appreciated. ?

cheers,

paul

LTO 5 Drives and Archive Software

Hi,

A friend of mine is looking to start archiving his work onto LTO 5. Currently he is using thunderbolt dives which is getting expensive!

In the past I've used Quantum and Tandberg drives and robots and PresSTORE for the database.

In this case robots and PresSTORE are overkill.

He's looking at this drive

http://www.transparent-uk.com/ibm-ts2250.html?gclid=CO2UgZeQo7kCFaKWtAodslgArQ

As for the database I initially started looking at LTFS however this looks promising.

http://ww2.productionbackup.com/

Does anyone have any experience with either of the products and know if they are any good.

It will be running from a Mac Pro. Also the guy has no full time sysadmin so its needs to be fairly simple to operate.

Cheers,

Mat

IB with flame (& GPFS)...

By Paul Simpson -
hi all,

we're looking at speeding up our internal network / flames & storage - mainly for the new(ish) 2d department. ?

we're investigating re-purposing / hacking some some old IB gear from a retired 3 machine isilon cluster. ?

here's a few (odd) questions:?
1/ does anyone know if flame/flare will work with the isilon IB cards/switch?
2/ from what i understand, autodesk IB uses TCPoverIB. ?can a IB card run in both modes simultaneously? ?ie, TCPoverIB and also RDMA? ?ie, can the flames chat with each other AND also communicate with GPFS via one IB interface?
3/ are we mad? (yes, i know we should pay some ???'s and just get on 10Ge)

i know this is somewhat hacky / convoluted. ?so, even gut feelings or warnings would be welcome. ?we'll be starting this next week - so will let you know how this goes.

cheers,

paul

NVR and IP Camera recommendations

$

By Bill Heiden -  A friend from a film company has suggested that we get some newer surveillance equipment to help maintain a good working relationship.

After getting a quote from our security company, we realize this is something we can do for about a third of the cost.

A four bay QNAP NVR was suggested and the price seems acceptable. Any pros/cons on the manufacturer? Any suggestions for another manufacturer?

Our security company also recommended Brickcom cameras. Any pros/cons or suggestions for another manufacturer?

Also interested in what resolution and retention time others are using?

 Thanks in advance

So i f'd around with Wine and CS5 but am not sure its going to fly for the artists.

I was wondering if any one knows of a remote like solution which may exist that will allow us to at least present the illusion PS is running on the linux desktop.

something like citrix or similar.    anyone have any experience or knowledge of a solution being used like that?  wacom tablets need to work..  vmware products running on the machine seems to be a bit overkill and cantankerous to maintain.
