How do you backup Flame projects?

0

By Bill Heiden -

Title pretty much sums it up. Are you backing up .seg files or exporting the elements and then backing up the elements? Do you backup from NFS mounts? Also would be interested in what software works best for you. Would appreciate any feedback. Enjoy your weekend.

Isilon - Smart Connect randomly refusing to ... connect to Windows clients

By Fabrice Altman -

<!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->

Hi,

Just recently, sometimes some Windows clients are refused connection to the Isilon.

For some reason in that case, one of the nodes or the Connect virtual IP address  does not allow any user in.

It pings fine but asks for credentials to access the shares.

Nothing has changed on the DC or cluster recently...

Most of the time, restarting the client machine, sometimes 2 or 3 times fixes it.

Anyone ?

Cheers,

F.

Any one using this bad boy?

If you could design a system all over again with this unit in mind, how would it look?

Wondering what the real implications on file server design are with this thing.

RealD CE5 Eyeglasses not holding a charge

By Michael Oliver -

We purchased a 3d kit from RealD a few years ago (DLP TV, CE3 and CE5 eyewear, couple other things..) and it has helped us with everything from Avatar to Underworld 4. ?It just came to my attention that a few of the CE5 glasses were not holding a charge anymore. ?I dug up a few pairs that were still in original packaging and it turns out they do not hold a charge either. ?All 10 paris of CE5 glasses do not hold a charge. ?I contacted RealD and was told that they were out of the 1 year warranty and I was on my own.

I opened a pair up and found the following packet style integrated battery. ?Anyone know an odd-job batter/hobby shop that might have these on hand? ?Bonus points if they are in Los Angeles. ?Googled the numbers without result.

Numbers are as follows:

Rack mounting a Mac Pro workstation?

0
0
By Klaus Steden -

Hiyo,

We're looking to fit a Mac Pro workstation in a standard 19" telco rack, horizontally. Most of the solutions I've seen are modifications to permit vertical attitude, which won't work due to our pre-existing installation. There is a company in Germany that will fit your machine into a comparable rack mount kit, but obviously, it's in Germany and we're in LA, there's FCC paperwork, shipping, all of that nonsense and headache that is undesirable.

Anything that would help avoid having to void the warranty would be greatly appreciated!

thanks, Klaus

proxy settings - windows.

0

By Greg Whynott -

Good day,

Was trying to help a shop when we ran into what i guess is a bug with FireFox related to proxy configuration. Wondering if anyone also ran into this and had a solution.. The odd thing is the dev team has known about this for years.. I'm not a developer but it seems like a fairly simple thing to fix or implement a work around, or at least a better use of time than incrementing the version number of the product every few days by leaps and bounds. guess it makes them look busy. 8)

The default setting on FF since 3.something has been "Use system settings" for proxy configuration. With this default setting, FF is unable to determine the proxy settings if the internet control panel is set to 'auto discover proxy'. Every other popular browser works without issue that we have tested.

The proxy.pac/wpad file location is provided by both DNS and DHCP, and in an attempt to resolve the issue, its part of the AD GP now too.
still no dice. Apparently you have to load the IE dll first to populate an environment/registry value before starting FF, I've not tested this yet as it is not, nor could be considered a solution for them.

and that's it... do you know of a way to have FF pick up proxy settings while set to the default "use system settings"? Or a tool that allows you to configure FF settings via a GP or similar?

danke and happy friday!

Charing Clients for Bandwidth

Hi Gang-

Long time lurker, infrequent poster? Happy Friday.

Is anyone charging clients for bandwidth usage when moving files? Our file based delivery is growing and I'm interested in knowing how people bill clients for the usage.

Thanks!

great alternative to fibre...motorola canopy wireless...100mbps to 300mbps bandwidth

By Chris Giggie -

for anyone having a hard time getting fibre installed, or fibre access, I found a great alternative

after moving our studio to Hamilton, we were initially looking to get a fibre connection....however install times were horrendous ( 6 months lead time, expensive to dig/run cable, longterm & expensive contracts )

we found a point-to-point wireless supplier using motorola canopy technology that offers 100-300 mbps, ( we're using 100mbps & it's enough for our needs; its also scaleable & dynamic meaning it will allocate whatever it needs to up/down, to a max of 100mbps with our current plan. you can also set hard limits on either )

get this: it was installed and running in about 2 days....beats the heck out of a fibre timeframe

it was also approx 1/2 the price of fibre per month, for the same bandwidth

our supplier is Netaccess out of Hamilton: great guys & the connection has been solid for over 3 months now...inclement weather has a negligible effect; there is a dish on the roof that points to a transmitter/receiver on a building downtown, which feeds into their backbone

I recall reading some laments about fibre access & install times on here, a while ago.....so hopefully this can help someone else out of a bind too

Wireless to the POP is great.

We use Towerstream on both coasts, over all very good even in adverse weather.  Support is also very good.

They hand off to Cogents backbone.

Isilon OS X Finder Weirdness

Hi, just wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior before I call Isilon.

We just rolled out our Isilon running 6.5.4.x and now our Mac's (10.6.8) have some weirdness.

When the editors are browsing the Isilon (via SMB), they will get part way into the directory structure and it will 'bounce' back up a few levels. It's very weird, and my google-fu is failing me.

Anyone using Amazon AWS EC2 Free? http://aws.amazon.com/free/

You have to enter a credit card to sign up so they can bill you if you go over the ‘free’ limitations. If you just wanted a basic web/mail server for personal usage do you think you would go over?
