Presumably most of us are buying our orange rubber ringed "video tapes" from a local distributor, but in case someone bought direct from their site, you may want to check your credit card statements.

Hey guys,
Just curious to know what everyone is using for there artists workstation Mice?
I am personally a huuuge fan of the old Microsoft Intellimouse 1.0-3.0
It was ambidextrous, accurate, and lasted a while. though sucked on shiny surfaces, but mouse pad fixed that..

After that $20 mouse was EOL, people are asking $45-$60 on some sites!

What do you all use for the studios?

Hi,

Say one ran a Flame 2010 archive to a directly attached LTO3 autoloader.

And said Flame box is now dead like Zed.

Is there a way to dump the tape contents some how?

I think I know that answer but one can always hope.

Maybe all cg/comp artists should be required to take this test before working at any VFX company or anyone dealing with color pipelines/calibrating monitors. I have had some interesting color conversations where artists are saying the color is off. So I challenged him to this test. he scored a 47. Not bad , but not as good as a 12 :)

This was on a crappy non calibrated dell monitor from 2010 U2410f. We also took the test on the same monitor...

Autodesk Flexlm 11.12 and Foundry flexlm Maya 2015 upgrades
posted by Lee Danskin on April 17, 2014, 7:50 a.m.
Just a heads up chaps, just had some interesting installation issues with the latest NLM from Autodesk conflicting with the Foundry version of Flexlm

When upgrading to 11.12 you will find that Maya lic's are not checked out on the client machine but look fine on the server.

Stopping the foundry version fixes the issue

We have seen that the lic file from Autodesk for 2015 runs fine with 11.11 so no upgrade required although stated by Autodesk.

This was a windows install just thought i'd put it out there for anyone else.

I had a related problem. Maya 2015 can't get a license if you deploy the lic file on AutoDesk FlexLM 11.11 (socket errors) - however Maya 2014 or earlier continues to work. You have to upgrade to 11.12.

I've run into your issue before and try use the vendor's preferred license server software + license file on a separate VM or piece of tin wherever possible.

To be fair, if they had just called it Windows 8.1.1 instead of 'Windows 8.1 Update', it wouldn't really seem surprising that 8.1.2 would imply having 8.1.1. There's no real need to maintain completely parallel patch sets for that sort of thing.

This must be the closet any vendor has come to a full NAS replacement. Benchmarks reflect IO workload on the local LAN (with no RT traffic back to S3 object store).

The write back mechanism that only sends inactive data to the S3 bucket looks interesting and most likely help drive down potential S3 storage costs. Amazon Direct Connect appears to be a requirement in order to minimize potential latency and availability issues which could be an issue since it is not available in all markets.

I presume FlashCloud is a repacking of the AWS Storage Gateway APIs but I cannot find any supporting documentation to verify. It appears that multi-site clustering is supported (according to the press release below).

The devil is in the details with regards to TCO but it looks very promising if for no other reason than the HA and DR benefits. With FlashMirror you should be able to replicate to another cloud provider for added security/availability?

I would say that this is a good time to be an Avere customer.

Avere FlashCloud
" FlashCloud on FXT Series Edge filers integrates public and private object storage with legacy NAS into a global namespace and provides performance for users everywhere via NAS protocols. The filers provide enterprise NAS functionality, including NFS and CIFS protocols, scalable performance, and HA, to support any applications running on NAS. Together, filers and object storage provide capacity scaling and enable 70% or more savings in TCO. "

Autodesk floating licence server variables
posted by Jeremy Smith on April 22, 2014, 8:10 a.m.

Hello everyone

With the recent news that Softimage is no longer going to be supported by Autodesk we are looking at getting Maya up and running.

My question, for those who have exsperience with Maya and Softimage, what are the enviroment variables for Maya and Softimage in regards as to telling them where to look for the licence server.

Normally we could simply “burn” all this information into the setenv file (for Softimage) into a image of a workstaion and then deploy – this has worked for years.  However since I’m doing this again, and now getting Maya into the mix I would like to improve upon this and would like to control all this system variables.

Saying all that I believe the variable used by Softimage is “ADSK_LicServers”  So something like

set "_ADSK_LicServers=@mylicenceserver" should do the job?

I’m not sure what the Maya variables are.

If anyone has done this before (which Im sure people have) if they could please reply it would be appriciated.

Thank you in advance!

Jeremy

Jeremy

I know Isilon has or had some challenges dealing with large volumes of small file transactions when compared to their direct competitors.

Where is it they excel and/or fall behind compared to the others vendors in your opinion?

They worked on the production "Harlock: Space Pirate".

I'd like to ask them to confirm which storage systems were used for the production of. getting some conflicting information which I'd like to verify.

thanks much,
greg
