IP number management
posted by Julian Firminger on May 2, 2014, 9:50 a.m.
Greetings all,

This came up in another thread and I cannot find it.

I'm wondering what you all are using for tracking ip numbers / hostnames etc. We have been small enough where frankly an xls was sufficient but as we are growing, and a nm increase AND there will be blocks of ip's managed by more than one person....

Any suggestions for a cheap/free ip/host solution with switch/port/mac/etc? Collaborative editing would be a bonus. (GDoc spreadsheet was the first thought)

Upgrading to from NexentaStor v3.1.x to version 4.x
posted by Bobby Jain on May 5, 2014, 11:15 p.m. (1 day ago)
The Nexenta docs are telling me that this is not 'an end user process':

"Upgrading from 3.1.x to 4.x is a disruptive process that requires a fresh install on the controller heads and must be handled by Nexenta Professional Services to ensure no configuration
information is lost in the process.
"

Install Guide (http://info.nexenta.com/rs/nexenta/images/NexentaStor-4-0-2-Installation-Guide.pdf)

The upgrade instructions are actually in the release notes for version 4.0.2, and not 4.0.1 which feels a bit strange. (http://info.nexenta.com/rs/nexenta/images/NexentaStor-4-0-2-Release-Notes.pdf)

Have any of you gone through this process with Nexenta yet? There are a number of bugs in 3.1.4 that I want to move past. Plus the promise of increased performance and better monitoring is attractive.

Paul,

how could 4.0.1 possibly be considered for new deployments only and not an upgrade path for existing customers? There are many bugs fixed between the two which both new and existing customers would benefit greatly from.

My understanding is you do have to reinstall the OS but there are methods to retain the configuration, and its using the same ZFS revision so no problems re-importing your volumes. Are you aware of issues with customers doing this? While this is a bit cantankerous, I don't think it should preclude any existing customers to take advantage of it.

> What issues in 3.1.x are you experiencing that is motivating you to want to upgrade?

there are many issues in 3.1 which caused us some level of grief, how much time do you have?. ;) the largest ones in our opinion were cross platform permission handling related, but my testing with 4.0, it appears they nailed them which is good. Personally I can't wait to upgrade our systems, but the pressure is low as our "work around" has mitigated the lameness to acceptable levels. ;)

@Bobby - we have not upgraded yet but we have planned for this to happen at the end of the month, doing some archives and need to back up about 1PB of data before it happens.

take care,

-g

the 4.0.1 release was not really intended for systems already deployed. It was intended for new deployments only. Now, i don't know anything about your deployment so my assumptions are purely that, assumptions. there are a couple of ways for you to go.

1. Work with the VAR that you purchased your Nexenta solution from (If you rolled your own or a VAR was not involved, nevermind) to get installed on the latest version.

2. Pay Nexenta engineering to do the install for you.

3. Depending on your skill and comfort level, download the ISO and do the intall yourself. The usual caveats apply here.

4. Wait unil later this spring/early summer for the release from Nexenta that includes the in place upgrade ('setup appliance upgrade'). I have it on good authority that this release (4.0.3) is slated for mid-June.

Best of luck to you,

Paul

Thought Id give a quick shout about a fantastic vendor;

Sergio Bertamini | Account Executive - Entertainment Div.

310-503-8261 (Direct)  |

877-440-5252 (f)

which helped me rock a live production we did for Audi A3.  Seriously we just killed it.

If any one has done a live event, then you know how chaotic and off the cuff/on the fly they truly are.  With all the politics of who can use what outlet, walk way etc but I digress.

Serg helped procure warez faster then the speed of sound.

The show wouldt have been successful with him.

I got like 21 Macs in a few hours to a day (including the new Darth Vader Mac), couple of crazy Xirrus APs etc

Serious.

Backburner rendering slow
posted by Kevin McCartney on May 9, 2014, 4:38 p.m. (1 day ago)

I have a 5k job currently rendering 400 frames. When the op renders locally on his machine he can get a sequence done in about an hour. When he sends the same sequence across 9 burn nodes it takes twice as long. There is 1 gig going to each node but the setups and everything add up to 100mb or so. This makes me less concerned about it being a network issue. The burn nodes are fairly similar in terms of hardware. The only major difference is the Flame has a 5800 and the burn nodes have quadro 4000's. Even so an extra 9 machines should be exponentially faster. Has anyone seen any similar issues or have some ideas? Thanks guys!

what version of flame are you running?
with the initial release of 2014 we discovered an issue with specific burn jobs where every burn node would render every frame in the render.
500 frames would render in 25 minutes locally, but would take hours when run across 12 burn nodes.
500 / 12 being a much smaller number than 500 * 12...
since 2014sp2 the issue appears to have been corrected...

Try sending it to a single node, and assuming the machine with the 5800 is also a node, to itself (but via backburner).  It might be something like a network based cache directory.  Or maybe the burn nodes are going single threaded?  Once you've done one at a time, redo it with two to gauge impacts on performance.  Definitely look at it with something like menumeters (an OS X version of SGI's gr_osview), or if you happen to have Rush installed, rushtop.

Seekscale - new cloud rendering technology
posted by Francois Ruty on May 12, 2014, 7:53 a.m. (1 day ago)

Hello everyone! I represent a young company, developing a technology which enables us to provide studios with on-demand cloud computing nodes, that blend seamlessly in the local pipeline.

Our nodes appear on your network, file system, farm management system, and run the same software you do. Our objective is to enable studio to scale their pipeline without changing the workflows, and to be as competitive as on-premises machines, for all time frames.

We have a pretty original technological approach, and we're currently seeking feedback from the community, and are proposing free test sessions to studios.

Please feel free to contact me if you're interested, and you can of course post here if you have any question, I'll be glad to answer them!

Hi,

I got this unit and cannot for the life of me get in to admin it as I have no password for it.

We called Infortrend and they said its too old for them to know how to reset the password.  Pretty comical response so we havent given up but would like to save some time.

Any one know how to reset the password or better yet, its config?

Ive a serial console to it.

This should make things interesting, how long before we end up in a SR situation ? Two Japanese companies decided last months to stop manufacturing tape cartridge media (especially LTO): Maxell and TDK. http://www.storagenewsletter.com/rubriques/tapes/just-two-tape-cartridge-manufacturers-remaining-fujifilm-and-sony/ and three in tape drives (HP, IBM, Oracle StorageTek) and three in HDDs (Seagate, HP, Toshiba) Not sure how many workstation makers there are these days.
