Installing VRay Side by Side
posted by Colin Doncaster on May 30, 2014, 11:55 a.m. (2 days ago)
Hi all - Has anyone come up with a way of installing different versions of VRay on the same client machine and have them both work? We have a custom ecosystem tool for managing needs for software packages so were able to do eneed maya2014,vray2.40 which resolves all the dependencies (ie. like rez and every other environment management tool ). this works lovely for every other tool with have but VRay. The reason being is even if we tell VRay to not remove previous versions and use a custom installation path it still installs a libvray into the main Maya directory. It turns out this libvray is different from the global libvray that is installed (file sizes are different) and is required for Maya to work correctly (its tied to the maya frame buffer). So if I install VRay 3.0 after 2.4 Im left with an unusable 2.40 installation. Our current solution is to copy the maya specific libvray into a versioned lib directory and resolve that with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH/PATH/DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH depending on which platform. This is a pain in the ass when upgrading versions but seems like the only work around. So, has anyone found a successful way of having 2.40 and 3.0 of VRay installed on the same machine w/ the same Maya version and have them both usable? (with the idea that two projects may rely on different versions or you might want to build and test tools on the two different versions on the same box) Cheers, Colin PS - our easiest/dumbest solution is having two machines, but that doesnt help when building tools on a farm and running unit tests. Does anyone know if BlueArc/HDS filers have any kind of storage management API that allows you to effectively retrieve disk space usage information directly from the filer without having to use "du" over NFS?

I would have been blissfully unaware of TrueCrypt's sudden demise if we hadn't received an encrypted drive on Friday and needed to get TrueCrypt to access it.  Seems they've had to pull the plug in a hurry, not unlike LavaBit?

http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/

Rumours and theories abound, natch

So the question is: is anyone else encrypting portable storage and what options now exist for encrypted disk exchange?  I've used GPG in the past for long-distance secure digital transfers but it wasn't pretty.  A .com called Jetico sells container-level cross-platform encryption software but since it costs £€$, there's no assurance of wide acceptance.  Is TrueCrypt still reliable enough for hand-to-hand disk exchanges?

Hey All,

We’re going to be taking over a space on the second floor of our building and need to get a boat load of network drops done. Any recommendations for companies/people in town that can run a fiber connection from our Server room on the 5th floor (there are riser closets on every floor) to the suite on the 2nd floor and run all the network drops within the suite to a new patch panel?

Thanks!!

Hey everyone. I resigned my position at Look Effects a few weeks ago and am finishing up my last week this Friday. I will still be lurking and chiming in when possible and hopefully can still be included in events featuring beer, food, and tech talk.

If anyone needs a helping hand or some consulting I should have plenty of time on my hands and would love to meet more of you in person.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and camaraderie over the years and best of luck to you all down the road.

Cheers.

So we bought a quilt and some pillows from Restoration Hardware last year and yesterday they dropped off the Encyclopedia Britannica!

Wow, calling it a waste seems an understatement.

Thats 11 catalogs of various categories.

I was gonna recycle but if any ones wants to swing by, they are yours.

I'm trying to recover some data from a couple of SATA drives that were installed in a Power Mac (G5) running Panther.   I installed the drives in a Mac Pro running 10.6.8 and Disk Utility sees the drives, but they will not mount.  Before going further, I want to make there isn't a compatability issue preventing me from seeing the drives under snow leopard.  My google foo is weak today and could find anything directly pertaining to it.  Thoughts?

Does anybody have a good solution for mounting a vertical PDU on the back of a four post, open-frame, rack? Or should I just start drilling holes in the back of the rack?

As I review reruns of Top gear and Benny Hill, two of my most treasured shows, I ponder to myself, why, those pplz are very very cool.

My list in order of priority that I adore about Britain;

1) There use of the English language.  Sounds like poetry.
2) There motor cars, hope TVR makes a come back!
3) There humor, bar none the funniest in my world anyways.
4) Benny Hill and anything the Monty Python troop came up with.
5) Top Gear.
6) The rain.  Even though I love SoCal and will probably die here, I do love me a miserable long rain.  It suites me very well.
7) There sensibility.
8) There male actors.  These ppl seem like real men.  I get confused watching our US counter parts, cant tell if they are woman, men disguised as woman or something else, a FeMan perhaps?  Dont drink the waterrrrrr..

At any rate, just some ramblings on a fine Saturday enjoy my bread less coffee.
