meh

Im actually disappointed.

I chose the 3.7GHz quad core + D500 + 64GB RAM setup as this was mainly an AE CS6 /Lightroom CC need for an insane project (think 5K).  Looking at how both warez faired, it seemed like they benefit from speed rather then core count, hence why I chose the higher clocked option.

Additionally, we also rented a pair of older 5,1 Mac Pros from Sergio over at Smart Source and those ran the same or a tad faster in various AE/Lightroom tasks.  They had the 1GB Radeons.

While I havent had any time to debug this surprising outcome and the project is delivered (for now), Im stuck with what to do next in terms of blazing next gen Mac stations.

Would any one mind sharing there experiences with the new Borg Cylinders?

Oh, not real crazy with the flash storage performance either.  Seems like SSD is just fine.

While at first I didnt care for tinkering with the hardware and welcomed there closed hardware approach, now Im thinking not so good.  If I wanted a larger drive, its a wait time due to the factory having to do it.

If I wanted FC, etc, its more waiting on PCIe-TB unit etc

Time is money and money is time.

I really wanted to be a fan, I really did.

Now, its just egg in my face as artists, VFX sups, CD are saying Brian, whats going on

At any rate, comments are appreciated, in any form.

Does anyone know of a quality application for authoring play only DVD's? We have used Adobe Encore for years but now that it's EOL'd and doesn't have a stand alone installer I don't really want to deal with it anymore.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (we're all on windows btw)

Thanks!

Lightworks Beta for Mac

Has anyone had a chance to kick the tires on any of the more recent releases of Lightworks? Looks like the public Beta is out for the Mac, just wondering if a Lightworks comeback is a longshot or not? Would be good to see some competition in this space other than the junk Adobe's has been peddling.

I tried to download the Beta but after registering every attempt I make to download takes me back to the signin page. Probably not a good omen.

Hi are there any reccomended wifi consultents/engineers that people use?

We have Extreme Network WIFI 4511 ap's in place throughout the 2 floors of the facility, about 14 in total, as 6 are in audio suites.

Connected to a Extreme 450e Poe switch, we have a 100mb dedicated internet line, which is also shared with the wired facility.

Minimum number of clients is around 85.

We are runninginto various issues especially when busy, with clients unable to connect or being rejected.

We have limited client loads, and have smart RF on , however we still seem to get problems and warnings.

We would like a "specialist" to come in and help teak what we have to operate a lot smoother.

Any reccomendations appreciated.

Thanks

When RealFlow 2014 was announced, they said "you get a license of RealFlow Node with each RealFlow GUI license". When I went to redeem my 2014 licenses, I was told "no Node for you, only for new customers". That reminded me of having to pay TWC twice what a new customer pays for cable Internet as a thank you for being a loyal customer, and I expressed that disappointment to their sales folks. Apparently they got the message from enough customers that they have changed their policy, and now existing RealFlow GUI licenses (under support) are eligible for a companion RealFlow Node (command line) license.

It's not a huge thing, but it's nice to see a company that acknowledges that they made a mistake and corrected it. That kind of thing goes a long way towards establishing customer loyalty.

On another positive note, RealFlow 2014 does away with the proprietary floating license scheme and now uses RLM, which is great.

DVI extender over cat6 recommendations

Our "Gefen DVI Over 1 Cat6" extender has died.  Since the Gefen seems relatively expensive, I'm wondering if any one has a suggestion for a replacement?  We need the replacement to use the existing cat6 cable we have in place and it needs to support 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz.  Any suggestions, or should we just stick with the Gefen?   Thanks in advance.

Stornext - Applescript / RefreshFinder

We have now worked with StorNext 5 in 1 month, and I did find some bugs n old stuff I did not like.

One thing is Apples Finder Refresh rate that are horrible, so when browsing a stornext system, it will seem slow on some folders, and it will take forever, but when looking at the same folder by Terminal its rock stable and fast.

The fix is a small program called FinderRefresh, added inn the Zip.

I also did need some better management tools to do the daily jobs, where I don't want to go working with a web interface or terminal to do simple stuff so i made a simple doorway on the MDCs for that, and a Apple Script.

and here it is :

Document Scanning
posted by Bill Heiden on June 26, 2014, 2:58 p.m. (1 day ago)

I've been asked to look into the scanning of all the legal documents of a company.  There are thosands of docs/contracts that need to be scanned.  A quick search shows there are a number of companies providing this service, but I'm interested if anyone has attempted to do this on their own?  Any special software that would help automate this?  Can anyone recommend a service that they've used?  Any information will be helpful.
