Low Cost Backup Alternatives to Commvault and Netbackup

By Jeff Yana - I am looking for a low cost alternative to backup solutions provided by the major players (i.e. Commvault or Symantec). The only requirement is that it must support NDMP. I don't need de-dupe (I am backing up directly to tape), archiving, VMware or Exchange support or any other nice-to-have feature, I am just looking for a solid, reliable and easy to use solution that does not cost an arm and a leg. I have looked briefly at Zmanda, Netvault, BRU and Bakula. While I have used Netvault and find it solid, its still a bit on the pricey side. Zmanda and Bakula look interesting, but not sure how well they perform/scale in a Media and Entertainment environment. I dislike BackupExec, I think it is rubbish. Privately I like Netbackup but I loathe Symantec and think it far too complex and expensive a solution for this particular application. For those that might be interested, here is a nice little matrix that nicely summarizes the features of all the major players. http://wiki.bacula.org/doku.php?id=comparisons Not included here, but an area of interest to me, is cloud-based solutions. These seem unrealistic for most M&E customers without a whole lot of dedicated bandwidth and massively expensive SLAs. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. jy To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe
