I had similar trouble with win8 <-> osx samba 2, I have this in my notes: 3) Wouldn't 'guest' authenticate properly with the mac file server (samba 2). Disabling NTLMv2 worked: both Windows 7 and Windows 8 as well: regedit, modify the following key (or create it as a DWORD if it doesn't exist): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel ..and set the value to 1. In my case it didn't exist, so created it. Immediately UNC paths started resolving.
