Ridiculous licensing mechanisms never fail to astound me
posted by Dan Mons on Jan. 15, 2014, 4:35 p.m.
I find it more and more common that the people who write the administrative tools associated with software that requires management in a large, complex setup don't actually have any experience managing a large, complex setup. Most of the time their dev environments consist of a single machine (maybe a few VMs if they're really clever) and everything on the same subnet. When you see how this stuff is developed with no consideration for real world deployment, you quickly understand why it's so bloody terrible at real world deployment. I still maintain that every developer should spend 3 months a year being a sysadmin. I think software quality would dramatically improve if that were the case, even with the time "lost". -Dan ---------------- Dan Mons R&D SysAdmin Unbreaker of broken things Cutting Edge http://cuttingedge.com.au On 16 January 2014 07:25, Jean-Francois Panisset wrote: > From the DCPFLICS help file (licensing mechanism used by FumeFX): >> === >> Incrementing Licenses >> Once you've authorized your ACAP plug-in tool, if you purchase additional > licenses in the future that you would like to add to your DCPFLICS server so > that they are all kept in one location, please do the following: >> On a workstation with 3ds Max and the ACAP plug-in (that does NOT have the > DCPFLICS Server on it), launch 3ds Max and open the plug-in so it's > Interface is open.
