SSHDs in arrays yet?
posted by Jeremy Lang on March 20, 2014, 1:45 p.m. (2 days ago)
A lot of NAS devices and array controllers are supporting SSDs for caching in the array, some devices are even starting to have mSATA slots to add cache without taking a drive bay (unfortunately the one I've seen is a Drobo product and as usual it's all hype--performance is a *joke*).

But SSHDs are somehow still around and this one's price and size make me curious:

http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/161531_SEAGATE_DESKTOP_SSHD_4TB_SATA_3_5IN.aspx

(Though for some reason that's an Australian link, so availability and local price may not be good...)

Now that's certainly not an enterprise drive, but that asks another question--why not? Maybe even one with a SAS front end?

Sure, only 8GB cache... and it probably sucks at read prediction in this kind of use... but wouldn't it vastly increase write times at the very least? At least if writes are coming in faster than the controller can flush it's own cache...
