Oak Ridge, Lawrence Livermore and Argonne are bulk-buying their new super computers. (Yes, you read that right.) Which got me thinking, could the same logic apply to M&E? Not sure many of the execs of some of the businesses represented on SSA would necessarily go for it from a political standpoint. However, a regular topic that is coming up more and more frequently is the lower and lower margins with increasing (or never decreasing) data-center technology costs. I wonder what we collectively could do if 10 studios put a bid to the same vendor for compute nodes or storage. It's clear that there is great diversity in operations across the member base but not all of that is out of choice. Often end choices are made because one vendor / manufacturer has hit it's targets and will push for market share and you're on the right chair when the music stops. Even outside of that, surely we'd get a lot more attention if we collectively placed an order for 500 x3550's instead of 50, or 20PB of storage instead of 2... It is, of course, never that simple. let the yelling begin! Julian FirmingerSnr. Systems Administrator, United Broadcast Facilities Amsterdam, The Netherlands |
