Lightning -> network equipment

So those of you living in areas where you get a lot of lightning, certainly UPS's will protect your power, but do you ever get lighting sneaking in through internet connections?

I'd like to think there's optical isolation going on in the equipment attached to the internet, so that hits to eg. exterior internet copper doesn't get in past the exterior modem equipment, but not sure I've ever seen lighting protection mentioned in eg. DSL or Cable modem docs.

I'd like to think lighting protection is standard, but not sure..

PS. Nice big thunderstorm moving in over Pasadena; seen a few bolts from my office window.
