Anyone especially knowledgeable on the subject of Realflow sims?
I've got a guy rolled in doing RealFlow.. I'm giving him 12-core Westmere blades w/ 24GB RAM for simulations, and I see RAM usage climb 'til 22GB or so, then things pretty much flatline.
It was suggested that too-slow writes to the fileserver (smb on solaris = pretty lousy) were leading to a simulating-faster-than-it-could write situation where RAM wasn't being freed up fast enough. So I switched 'em over to NFS.. 7 or 8 times faster,
and things run better until he turns up the resolution of his emitter, then we get much bigger files (300+MB/frame) and pretty much run into the same problem.. Hitting a RAM ceiling it seems.
So, you brains -- what's the trick? Just put 64+GB in every simulation node? Is RAM the real key to these mofos? I'm looking now into simulating to a local USB-connected drive to eliminate network write speed as a limiting factor.
Thanks in advance for any advice. It's too nice a day to have animators and producers breathing down my neck about my poor little network that did JUST FINE THANK YOU VERY MUCH until they brought their fluid monsters in and set them loose on it.
