Maya 2016 Ext 1 SP 5 for Windows?
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on March 28, 2016, 6:20 p.m. (1 day ago)
Does such a thing even exist? I can only find 2016 Ext 1 SP 4, and when I login to our Autodesk account what is presented as a Ext1 SP5 .msi is only 1.5MB and seems to contain a single icon file.

I was hoping that somehow the "Autodesk Application Manager" would magically find what I need, but I can't figure out how to give it the credentials it needs to show me the updates I'm supposed to be entitled to.

Yet there are detailed release notes, which seem to indicate that this an actual release, with a lot of bug fixes over and above SP4.

Shotgun Cloud with Local AD
posted by Zorion Terrell on March 28, 2016, 8:40 p.m. (1 day ago)

Hey All,

Does anyone on this here list have experience with connection a Shotgun Cloud instance with Local Active Directory? I’m told SSO with AD is a no-go unless you host your own instance. We’d like to be able to do other things like dynamically update groups, mailing lists etc. We know we could build this from scratch, but looking to see if anyone has anything to share J

Thanks,

I was watching this video at 4k and thinking to myself 'the quality is crap, why did they put this up at 4k?'. Then I happen to mouse around and discovered it was a 360 video. You can pan around and check stuff out while it plays.

Isilon weirdness : access to specific file locks everything
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on March 30, 2016, 9:05 p.m. (3 days ago)
My Isilon knowledge is very superficial, and I will open a support ticket with EMC, but I figured I might ask here: I have a file (just a small Python script) on a 4 node cluster running OneFS 7.1.1.7 which will lock up any client (Windows or Linux) that tries to read it. Even if I login to the nodes themselves, an attempt to read the file with for instance "file badfile.py" will hang the shell, although at least there I can ctrl-c out of it (and this happens on more than one node).

For now I was able to rename the directory to VERY_BAD_STUFF and recopy the data from somewhere else, but the "bad" file is still there, and I'm concerned that this could be filesystem corruption on IFS.

Has anyone run into something like that? Hoping it's one of those "oh right, that happens all the time, just run xxx...".

Isilon weirdness : access to specific file locks everything

I've seen a impending drive failure cause some what of the same issue before. We had a VM running over NFS from a cluster which was bluescreening, apparently randomly, but also consistently.

It ended up that part of that VM image (a big file -around 1tb) was striped on a disk which was having errors, and going to die soon.

There's a command  at the cli which will tell you which disk(s) the file in question is stripped to. From there you can check out the disk status of those disks to see if any are throwing errors. I wish I could remember the command.

Anything in the quieted events?  Disk and CRC errors are evaluated by the cluster and automatically quieted.  (Naturally it wont quiet serious events as a matter of course but maybe something went wrong?)
isi events list --history --wide --coalesced | grep <something disky>

Is FSAnalyze running ok?
isi events list --wide --history --type=400100001,400100002,400100003

I know you're seeing it locally on the cluster but maybe a client can spot/log an issue as it happens.  You can turn up smb logging to debug, run a test and see if you catch anything
isi_for_array isi smb log-level --set=debug
(--set=error to turn it down again)
And look in lwiod.log (on each node)

What's in the script, is it an accidental assault weapon?  :P

Apparently the latest iDRAC firmware adds HTML5 console support. If I NEVER have to deal with another Java virtual console (and let's not even bring up the abomination that is an Active X based console, what year is this?), I will be a happy person.

Now I just need SuperMicro and HP to catch up.

Apparently some recent HID door controllers run Linux internally, and have a service running as root on port 4070 that ends up executing an arbitrary backticked shell command from an un-authenticated UDP packet:

What could possibly go wrong?

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post here, so please bear with me if this topic has already been covered before. I am a Computer Science student in my second year, and soon I have to put in course intentions for next year, where we specialize in certain fields. I am here to ask for advice and suggestions as to what you think would be helpful in this field! Currently I am working as a Render Wrangler, and aside from learning Python on the side (They dont have a course for it yet at my school) I want to know what you would suggest to someone who is interested in System Administration. University can teach me a lot of things, but there is nothing (in my opinion) better that getting out there and doing things, making mistakes and learning.

What is the best, most important thing that I should learn that would prepare someone like me for a career in System Administration?

Thank you in advance!

Anyone feel like helping out with some Linux Dual GPU setup issues?
posted by David Kossin on April 7, 2016, 3:31 p.m. (1 day ago)

If anyone has any suggestions about this it would be greatly appreciated.

The Setup: We have an HP Z820 running RHEL 6.2 that we just threw two NVIDIA Quadro M4000 cards into. This machine is used for Visual Effects. The first card has two displays connected to it and is working fine. The 2nd card is supposed to be used as a background rendering card with no displays connected. We use Autodesk Flame so this card will be for "Background Reactor".

The Problem: It seems like the system recognizes that the 2nd card is present but Linux does not seem to be using it. If I do lshw I see 2 "multimedia" sections that both display the NVIDIA cards with different identifiers which makes me think the system is seeing the 2nd card. But if I bring up the Nvidia X Server Settings it only sees one GPU (GPU 0). Autodesk Flame acts as though there is no 2nd card. Troubleshooting Steps: I've done some basic troubleshooting. Reseated the cards and tried them in different PCI slots. I've determined they are both working cards individually. I've tried plugging a display into the 2nd card and get no video. I've installed the latest appropriate NVIDIA drivers. I've editing the xorg.conf file with a Section "Device" for the 2nd card but I'm not sure that I've done it correctly. My best Googling efforts have not helped.

Hurdles: This machine is remote making this very difficult. Also, the machine cannot be updated to a new OS. Our software requires RHEL 6.2. So again, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Here is the "Device" sections of my xorg.conf file in case anyone wants to take a look: xorg.conf. did you install the DKU when both cards were present in the system? if not you won't get two backburner servers or all the adapters you need to do background reactor.

you can fix is with rmsoft and then reinstalling the DKU

Color Calibrated Monitor for Vray
posted by Brian Smith on April 7, 2016, 4:08 p.m. (1 day ago)

Hi all,

running maya 2015 on windows 7 PC and the current verison of vray, however we need to get a monitor that can be calibrated to give us a

correct view of the results before it goes to flame.

Right now when the lighting guy is kicking out his image sequence, its way off.

What are the reccomended current monitors that can be calibrated to give us a better result.

Thanks

Brian

Check what nvidia thinks you have with nvidia-smi. If it reports both cards properly, your drivers are good.

You might also be able to set the second card as cuda mode rather than display (I recall something about that with our nvidia cluster, but it's been a year since I touched that stuff)
