Strange terminal behavior (Lion 10.7.2)

By Bill Heiden -

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this under Lion?

  • From a terminal on a Lion box, ssh into a Snow Leopard box.

  • From that terminal try running top:

    [edit002:/usr/share] root# top Error opening terminal: xterm-256color.

What the heck?

Here are a few others:

[edit002:/usr/share] root# clear
terminals database is inaccessible[edit002:/usr/share] root# tcsh
tcsh: Cannot open /etc/termcap.

All these commands work fine, when going from Lion to Lion. More research to follow...

Happy Turkey Day.

Good day list...

I have a client in California who needs to get about 5TB of data to our datacenter, not to us. Can anyone recommend an alternative to him shipping HDD's half way across the planet so we can then transmit the data straight back to Huston?

used these ones extensively and they seem to last longer than your run of the mill linksys or lower-end dlink access point. just like anything, when they die, they die horribly (popped capacitors and other surface mount components seem to have about a 1.5-2 year lifespan in those crappy linksys AP's everyone seems to get from Staples). i quite like these D-Link dwl-3200ap's. as far as configuration goes, basically every AP is the same, i very rarely have to reboot these (i'm talking months, if ever) until they're about to die. they can do PoE or you can fake it with a supplied little power supply and ethernet splitter.

Hiya, Need to replace our image workstation monitors. Can really justify HP Dreamcolour (would love to..) and it seems the next step down is a big step down to the LP2475w. Anyone got any suggestions for something in the middle? I'm not set on HP either.

Yes its for colour work but the output is for web so it's more about colour consistency, good controls, staying calibrated for a reasonable time etc. Somehow I don't feel safe doing colour on a monitor that only costs $400... Feel like I'm cheating or something.

xCAT: anyone a pro?

$

By Dave Young -

let me start this off by just laying it out there: i hate xcat.

let me rephrase that, I LOVE one part of xcat and hate the rest; the ability to remote power ibm blades en masse without having to use the web gui is totally sweet, but the way it handles kickstart (tftp) and dhcp is the most absurd thing i have ever seen.

so i'm hoping someone can help me here. i'm on late today, doing the classic 11-8 PM shift. in reading emails from last night while at the gym, i encountered a bunch saying "the blades are down".

now last night i had configured some new rendernodes to pick up on our render vlan and kickstarted them in a more 'traditional' manner (using a hand-built tftp server and studio-standard kickstart files etc). so as you do, i added the new rendernodes' mac address to dhcp (this is on our xcat server, remember). while i was doing this i noticed that the dhcpd.leases file was empty (sure, who cares if its empty you must be all thinking, as i thought). anyway they picked up, kickstarted fine, started rendering and i went home. turns out that adding those machines to dhcpd.conf on our xcat server removed the other 175 blades' information from dhcp.leases, so when they maxed out their local resources and had to be restarted by our render wrangler over night, they came up and couldn't get leases, so everyone thought they were down. the whole effing farm.

so i keep getting calls, when i'm supposed to have a nice lie-in cause i'm working the late shift and i come in early to find its a simple matter of doing a 'makedhcp -a' on the xcat server to recreate the dhcpd.leases file, but does this mean i literally can't add hosts that aren't under xcat's control to dhcp on my xcat server without breaking the whole farm? what a joke! i mean of course the blades shouldn't be on dhcp anyway, but this is something i inherited not something i designed. can anybody tell me if its at all possible to run dhcp for xcat in a more traditional manner (i.e. - through /etc/dhcpd.conf rather that /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases)?

Hi all,

Checked out Rukus, cool but no diff in cost then say a DLink were a 15,000 square foot facility would run me $6-7K for what I need, Extreme and Juniper came in at ~$10K.

I have cash, but that's not a good reason to spend it especially on tech which I despise really as its all land fill in a few years, very gross.

Will check out Aerohive as I like the meshing idea, thanks Bobby, great post.

Hi all,

Does any one know of a way to get to project archives done on a Flame,
not setups but the project?

We currently have to use our Flame in getting to them as the projects
them selves are not regular old tar.

We changed how archive is done so this is no longer the case but we
have legacy stuff needing access now and again.

I just think its silly to use a Flame in getting to a project archives.

Hi Everyone,

I’d like to invite everyone in the Vancouver area or those visiting, to join us on December 1st for the Vancouver Sysadmin meeting.

This month’s topic is “Virtualization” with IBM

Today’s organizations require efficient, affordable storage solutions that help keep up with exploding information demands. Yesterday’s storage solutions are not built to meet these new challenges.

IBM continues its commitment to delivering groundbreaking storage solutions. Our virtualization product suite will give you the scalability, manageability and enterprise-level capabilities that meet both your business needs and IT budgets.

Storage tiering with solid state drives, scale-out-NAS, storage virtualization, and storage resource management.

Storage efficiency. Reduce physical storage requirements by up to 50% and make future storage growth easier to accommodate. Use Real-Time Data Compression for your
Active and On-line NAS environments.

Service Delivery. Improve service levels and beat expectations through better analysis, clearly demonstrate the business value of IT, and confidently support always-on applications.

Data Protection. Shrink back-up windows and speed restore times to help meet recovery objectives more reliably and efficiently.

Join us on December 1st for an interesting discussion surrounding IBM’s technologies which will enable optimization; resulting in reduced complexity, increased utilization and reduced cost for your organization.

any squid masters out there?

looking for guidance on creating delay pools,? something I've never done before and because its a production system,? I'd like to minimize my down time or the amount of time i'd be here if I have to come in on the weekend to do it.

the intent is to limit bandwidth to a list of external networks,? either by IP or URL regex stuffs,? to 1000kb/sec for the entire studio during work hours,,? except for a list/group of defined excluded hosts inside;? which will have unrestricted access to the same external hosts.

A working example would be all I need I suspect...?

i'm attempting to limit youtube bandwidth during work hours for a particular inside network,? whist the other inside networks have full bandwidth,? with squid.? At the same time the 'limited' network has full bandwidth to other non youtube sites. ?

?I achieved this on the router using limiters/queues but its appears this won't work going forward,? with the new 'exclusion' requirement. ?? The source or destination always appears to be the squid server itself from the internet router's perspective.? which is why i'm considering squid now.

thoughts or other methods that come to mind?

danke!

maya 2011 & Nvidia Quadro 4000

Hi All,
From an artist here in my office...

To start, I was running the nvidia driver version 258.96, win 7 64-bit based on the recommendation of this page on nvidia's site:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/partner_certified_drivers.html

which, for maya 2011, win7 64bit, quadro 4000, the recommended driver is 258.96.  I crashed non-stop.  I originally assumed it was the heavy geometry and vray proxies in our scene files for this job, but then Katie wasn't having this issue.  I checked her driver, which is 270.51, so I removed 258.96 and installed 270.51.  I crash less, but I still crash.  If I want to make sure I crash, I go from shaded mode to wireframe.  bang.  dead.  If I select to many objects at one time, dead.

Anyone else using a 4000 and having issues?

Thanks for any help!
-Tommy A

Someone posted a script a little while ago that opened a maya binary scene, saved as ascii, did some changes (sed??), and then resaved as binary. I thought I saved that message somewhere but nope. It's gone. Anyone remember this? Anyone have something similar? Rob
