Shotgun server spec

$
0
0
By Mike Owen -

Hi,

According to Shotgun Software's spec page, the following is required for ~400 users:

Recommended: 8-Core server spec
Approximate Cost: USD $9,000

  • 2x Quad-Core E7340 Xeon, 2.4 GHz
  • 32GB Memory
  • 4x 15K RPM 150GB Serial-Attach SCSI, RAID 10 Config*
  • Gigabit Network Adapter
  • RAID and periodic backups, as for any server
  • Can deploy on single box (normally works for up to ~400 users), or on multiple servers to spread load

Can anyone provide some 'real-world' specs on what they are using to run Shotgun locally in their studio,?preferably?in a VM environment, for say ~50 users?

Thanks,
Mike

my favorite part was the "Soda Report"

that's some pretty cool shit. i wish i could use it to control the vending machine rather than generate reports on activity. free reese's cups every day and arizona iced tea never hurt anybody...

Here at OpenNMS we like to say we can use the management application to
monitor just about anything you can put on a network.

So how about a drink machine?

We set out to do just that, and the result is the OpenVND project:

http://www.openvnd.org

This is how we manage the soda machine in the office, and we hope it
give you some ideas on solving some of your more complex management
problems.

What they are offering is an evaluation of your entire pipeline and
render bottlenecks. One of the tools is the card. They have never
heard of Vray so I just stopped right there. I was apparently the
third person in the last couple of days to bring some concerning
issues to his attention. I would be skeptical about letting these
guys into my system, and some of you guys are in much larger much
more complicated systems than my little setup.

Anyone run into an issue where no matter what clip they delete , space never gets reclaimed? This has happened a few times and I chalked it up to user error but I just wiped this flame about a week ago and its filled up again. I had the Artist go project by project and delete everything. Running on Standard FS on a single Xyratex. Flame P 2012.1

CXFS vs CVFS

Hi All,

Been reading the forum for some time now, this is my first post. We’ve been using an SGI CXFS SAN at our facility for many years now and we know where we’re at with this kit and happy with the performance we get; but we’re moving to a new building soon and have an opportunity to buy some new kit. Was wondering about everyone’s experience with ADIC Stornext filesystems, as they look much cheaper for the same underlying disk and controller hardware. Has anyone ever had any major issues or gotchas when using SNFS/CVFS? Would be great to hear of any good experiences too. Would also be great to hear if anyone’s got some opinions on the pros/cons between CXFS and CVFS SANs?

Thanks!

hi everyone,

the very tiny studio i work at has come to realize that a drawer of firewire hard drives is not a valid backup solution. There are lots of such resources, but what would you guys give your newbies to read?

MediaHarmony for shared Avid storage

$
0
0
By Andrew Klaassen -

I've just the MediaHarmony Samba VFS module to work with latest Samba.? If you've ever tried to run multiple Avid clients from a single Samba share (and discovered the corruption and crashes that happen) you might be interested.

Original project:

http://ingex.sourceforge.net/MediaHarmony/

I've updated only the media_harmony module so far.? The other parts look interesting, but I don't have a reason to work on them right now.

My employer has agreed to let me release the code as GPL, and Jeremy Allison has said positive (if non-committal) things about including it in a future Samba release.? Mailing-list discussion here:

https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2012-March/082359.html

...and official "please add media_harmony to Samba" request here:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8841

If you're interested in testing and reporting bugs (or encouraging the Samba developers to include it), I'd love to have you try it out.? I've also got a version that compiles against the current Samba 3.6.3 release available that I'd be happy to send you via email.? (There are slight differences between Samba 3.6.3 and git-latest Samba that require minor module changes.)

Background info:

Part of the legacy from Avid's days as a dedicated-hardware system is that multiple Avid systems do not play nicely together on shared storage.? They overwrite and corrupt each other's database files and interrupt each other's processing.? Fully shared Avid storage with a vanilla Samba server is effectively impossible because of this.

There are solutions to the problem, but they're sold (by the vendor and others) for $40K-$100K USD and up.? There are also workarounds that involve complex arrangements of permissions settings and file copying, but they impede and confuse the workflow as much as they facilitate it.

The media_harmony VFS module is a simple, elegant solution to the problem from the user's point of view (though it's a bit of a hack from a developer's point of view).? The small handful of troublesome files are kept separate per client on the server, while each Avid client system sees those files exactly where it expects them to be.

Not to this specific trojan, certainly. It only effects OS-X by exploiting Java to deploy native code. Anything running OS-X with Java installed, and the ability to run native x86 code is decidedly not a phone. That said, various phones with Java may well have exploitable vulnerabilities which can be used in a similar fashion. Part of the reason that the iPhone doesn't run Java, Flash, Emulators, etc., is exactly to avoid this sort of inner platform vulnerability.

Seagate Constellation vs. Hitachi Ultrastar

Happy Friday, List!

I'm spec'ing out a Thumper-esque solution and having trouble finding my favorite Hitachi Ultrastar 2TB drives at a reasonable post-flood price. The Seagate Constellations seem pretty reasonable given the market circumstances but I don't have any experience with them. Anybody using these in their ZFS (or other high capacity) systems and have you had good luck?

Also, if anyone has a line on a used/refurbished/reconditioned X4540 (Thor), I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance!
