I guess I'm jumping on the bandwagon of the west coast - and I figured I would send this out to see if anyone had any tips for an east coaster/Canadian/Brit who probably doesn't know what he's getting into properly out there. Due to family circumstances, my wife is ushering us over there. I've always enjoyed my gig here in NY with CineSys, and I'll be sad to leave it - perhaps you lovely humans can help give me some tips on SF or LA...

- Who are the big "avoid these guys like the plague" companies out there?
- Who are the VARs out there? I know RFX and GPL Group....
- How about terrible places to live in SF or LA so I don't wind up in the hood?

Any tips are appreciated. I will be based out of San Bernardino county starting November 15th, and my employer has been gracious enough to allow me to work remotely for them until I settle - so please get in touch if you wanna get a drink, talk shop, show me your place - whatever! Any leads on gainful CA employment would be vastly appreciated, too.

An exciting frontier, California is - at least for those of us who are new to it.

(And any NYers that want to get a drink before I leave, please don't hesitate to get in touch, too)

It's been a while, or I missed one.

One suggestion I'd have for content would be high-end switching. 10gE to artist desktops is becoming a thing for a lot of workflows.

All the companies that used to specialize in M&E have been bought out and merged into god knows what.

It's hard, for me at least, to find good solutions in the space between more than 48 ports and a big expensive chassis. I really miss the back-end stacking switches like the Cisco 3750E had. Burning though 4 client ports per swtich connected for trunking and having bottlenecks isn't my idea of a solution even if they have something that ties them together for management as one logical switch...

I've now been to Cisco booths at several M&E events (especially NAB) and the look of shock on their faces when I ask who I can talk to about SWITCHES is infuriating! IF they have a solution for me I don't have a week to dig it out of their website...

It'd be great to get representatives from what's left of the old standbys (Force10 and Extreme) or at least high end VARs for them to tell us they haven't forgotten us!

Then there's all the new upstarts that look promising, but a frank discussion of concerns about equipment sourced through China would be great too.

I can't seem to find any manual online that breaks down the syntax of SuperMicro IPMI command line. I'm looking to send the boot and shutdown commands to the computers with the username/pass attached.

Anybody have experience with this?

Hi,

Any one using this combo?

If so, mind telling me what your LUN sector sizes are?  This can be found in your /Library/Preferences/Xsan/storage_name.cfg file.

Should be either 512 or 4096, hopefully the latter,

So, when looking at render gear, it's always a PITA to figure out what CPU to spec it with. I just did a little Google Doc to get a vague estimate of bang for the buck with current Xeons. I imagine others have done better calculations, but AFAICT, if anybody asks the current best value is the 2630v3. (Ignoring licenses and such, just in terms of the actual hardware) It shifts around depending on the spend for the other components.

What are the good solutions out there?

Anything good that's also free (preferably runs on Windows)?

Spiceworks looks a bit consumery/small networks.

What's Up Gold sounds good but also $$$$.

Looking for something that can do what the old 3com Network Supervisor software did so well, give me logical maps and live monitoring of interconnect utilization would be a real bonus...

An acquaintance runs a small studio here in Toronto and his 'guy' is off sick indefinitely. He is looking for someone for a short term contract, possibly turning into full time.

you would be responsible to assist with desktop support in this 2D flash based studio, backups and taking care of the linux file server.

should you know anyone who may be interested, please jet me a note off list.

take care,
greg

Hi Eveyone,

Lately we have noticed mavericks clients have been reporting a "pause" when browsing the internet.

If we ping google for example, every 10 minutes or so we would see icmp errors. We thought this was a Dell Force10/powerconnect port channel/vlt etc problem. So have been going round in circles trying to fix.

Im not sure if it is a networking configuration any more or a client problem?

I can repoduce this the "pause" by running a netstart -r on mavericks clients

When the command reaches the internet6 report the systems will pause and a ping running in the background will report icmp errors.

If i turn ipv6 off in mavericks "networksetup -setv6off Ethernet" the problem goes away.

All 10.6-10.8 clients do not see this problem?

has anyone come across, or seen this before?

Is this mavericks or a ipv6/networking issue?

Matt

Any one having issues running a new trash can off NetBoot/etc?

I see the NetBoot icon during startup when pressing the option key but after choosing it I immediately get a denied icon.

Is it a matter of a non unified 10.9 setup by chance?

Hello, I'm writing an article for Seekscale company blog (www.seekscale.com), about the use of Linux in VFX, to help the portion of our audience who is using windows understand what is at stake when switching to linux.

I have a few questions, and all comments are most welcome.

1- What are the criterias/arbitrages to choose a Linux distribution? I guess that each distro has its pros and cons, and we would like to lay out a sum up of the arbitrage you have to make when picking a linux distro

2- I guess that the biggest interest of Linux is to be able to develop custom software. When a studio is growing, according to you what is the criteria or metric beyond which linux must be considered? Is it for example when you start having custom shaders or renderer?

Thanks!

We are writing an article about the VFX reference platform, and we want to speak about it in a broader context, to inform windows users of the pros and cons, the stakes, of a linux transition.
