Hi All,

I've unsuccessfully googleed for a uk source for a pre-wired 1m front to back patch panel. Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to pick one up?

Cheers,

Paul

We deployed a 100Mbps line of sight microwave drop using Towerstream (formerly Color Broadband) for a popular YouTube channel. We were up and running in less than 30 days and it worked flawlessly.

We needed something setup fast because our fiber provision had a 90 day lead time. After the one year contract was up they decided to keep the wireless service as part of their network.

Looking through the archives of SSA there was a discussion for ProRes encoding and also DNxHD encoding where you ran sed on the ffmprgwriter.so file to change dnxhd to proves to take it out of the blacklist. sed -i 's/dnxhd/proves/g' ffmpegWriter.so Tried that however nuke falls over now with a segmentation fault when you are in the write node and select ffmpeg. Tried updating ffmpeg to no avail. Is there some secret sauce I am missing here? tape backup corruption and help
posted by Gresham Lochner on Oct. 6, 2014, 11:05 p.m. (1 day ago)
Hi, We're having difficulties with tape backup and are hoping to get everyone's opinion on what we're doing and see if there is a resolution. Right now we're using LTO5 as LTFS in Windows 7. The drive is a Quantum TC-L52BN. Originally we were copying data using a program called SyncBack. However, we were getting really slow speeds and the device was "shoe-shinning". It would constantly speed up and slow down. We installed cygwin and used rsync (rsync -av), and that gave us more reliable transfer speeds. When we viewed the data right after copying, it looked fine. However, when we removed the tape and put it back in the drive, we noticed some nasty horizontal black lines going across our .dpx frames. I've attached an image to this email of what we're seeing. Has anyone seen this before? I'm wondering if this is a cygwin issue or rsync issue. Or maybe this has to do with windows. I've tested using the not as elegant cp command and that seems to work on small cases (e.g. one dpx) but I haven't tried it on a large data set. We haven't tried the process on linux. I think the reason we didn't go with linux is because we knew the driver for the SAS card worked in windows, but didn't try it on Ubuntu 12.04. If anyone recommends us doing that, we're willing to go down that road. But we're pretty adamant about using LTFS and not tarring archives. Does LTFS work the same in linux? Thoughts? Thanks, - Gresham

Morning! Wondered if anyone on list has managed to get either of these boxes to work with a new Mac Pro running Final Cut 7, currently trying to spec out a new edit suite but we'd much rather not having to go to FCX if it can be avoided but I'm wondering if this is going to bite me? Any insights or view points from the coalface would be gratefully received. We ordered some Ram upgrades for our s200's....

I have seen some pretty bad shipping in the past from other companies but this is really irresponsible. I dont care if they are field upgrade Kits. I hold Isilon in high regard. Which is why I am taking the time to post this in hopes that this logistical embarrassment will change the way they go about shipping in the future. ( prob not ) .

I just happened to purchase ram for some render node upgrades. Here is what it arrived in.

Looks like they have some good Dedupe Running.

thats shameful. HP is just as bad. I think I posted similar pictures a few years back at the ludicrous and inexcusable waste of packaging they sent for memory upgrades. The try and pass the buck off saying its the logistics company, pretending they have no influence over them... Its kinda sad they don't have the forward thinking to enable them to understand that people purchase memory more than one piece at a time and don't have process in place for that. They have only been doing it for 15 years or so, maybe they need a little more time to wrap their heads around reality. :)

Gmail with Apple Mail yesterday & today
posted by Rob LaRose on Oct. 7, 2014, 4:10 p.m. (1 day ago)

Anybody else start having Apple Mail + GMail problems yesterday on old OSX versions?

All my 10.8.5 and 10.9.2 Apple Mail clients stopped getting new messages yesterday.. when Mail.app is first launched, it gets all the new messages, but from then on, no new messages show up in Inbox until you quit & re-launch the app.

Webmail and other IMAP clients are unaffected (iOS Mail, Thunderbird, etc.), and ALL my 10.8 systems got the same symptom at the same time yesterday afternoon.  Seeeeeeems like GMail changed something.  Im in the process of looking through Mail.app IMAP session logs to see

Am I alone?

Hi list,

We are here, officially, about to "officially support Mac's".
<cue>dun_dun__daaan</cue>

Thus I am searching for a centralized system imaging platform we can use for deployments.
I know many of you do this regularly, as are we with non-macs. Any suggestions / recommendations?

Cheers in advance.

Anyone interested in some BOXX Nodes?
posted by William Sandler on Oct. 8, 2014, 2:35 p.m. (1 day ago)
We have a couple dual-node BOXX render nodes we no longer have space/need for. Each chassis has two motherboards, 4 Intel E5520's, 18GB of RAM, 150GB HDDD, and a Windows 7 license.

We have two (4 nodes total) and we're looking to get rid of them for pennies on the dollar. They all POST and boot into Windows. Contact me off-list if you're interested.

"non genuine" disk replacement on isilon
posted by Andrew Freckelton on Oct. 8, 2014, 8:02 p.m. (1 day ago)

Hi,

Just a question to the isilon gurus out there,

Have any of you guys used non-genuine disks in an isilon node with any success? I've got an old system with a failed drive that isn't under ay support and was wondering if there are any gotcha's regarding custom firmware versions or similar that would prevent us replacing the dead drive with the same model hdd not sourced from EMC.

Any insights you guys could pass on would be appreciated

Cheers

Andrew
