Hi, We have some hand-built Kuper motion-control systems that still get a lot of work for our stop-motion jobs. The rub with these is that the Kuper controller cards use one to two ISA slots. We’ve been running them on some rigs that Goodwill would be ashamed to take. I’d like to replace them but the market is strange. You’ve got people holding onto old parts and selling high, probably correctly guessing that if someone is looking for a motherboard with ISA slots they must need them. There are also motherboards geared towards industrial applications – I imagine that the similarity between motion-control and C&C manufacturing comes into play here. I did find this company, selling what they say are new parts at a reasonable cost: http://www.nixsys.com/motherboards/nx800.html Is anyone else in the same boat? Have something to recommend? Tried systems from Nixsys before? Our requirements boil down to: 2 or more ISA slots IDE for storage PS/2 for kb / mouse Supports DOS Thanks for any input, --Joe Joe Chonacky IT Manager / BENT Image Lab 503.228.6206 |

The Packet Pushers networking podcast just had a really interesting episode about moving data centers, a type of project a lot of us have to tackle. Nothing earth shatteringly new, but interesting to hear from guys who have obviously done a lot of these, and good data points to build your own checklist. Autodesk license generation only works on Explorer?

I swear this used to not be the case, but I just went to generate my Maya 2016 floating licenses, and on both Chrome and Firefox it didn't work, the boxes to enter the license server info wouldn't show up. Had to go to (gasp) Explorer to make it work. Really, in 2015 people still only test their web code in Explorer? Or maybe I've got some funky browser plugins in Chrome and Firefox, whereas I keep Explorer vanilla... |

Hi, We're experiencing a number of failures in maya due to "Too many open files" errors. This is running Maya 2015 on Win8.1 dell workstations. We believe what we have is the same problem as this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26798467/limit-to-how-many-files-maya-can-open-on-windows However the suggested fix doesn't appear to work in our case.
Just wanted to see if anyone out there had dealt with this before. Any fixes that don't involve switching os ? Is this a hard constraint on windows?
any suggestions gratefully received. Ben |

The Renderfarming BoF has already been mentioned on this list, and it's organised again for SIGGRAPH; on the Tuesday 4-5pm. http://s2015.siggraph.org/attendees/birds-feather: > Renderfarming >> Tuesday, 11 August, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, > JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live, Atrium 3 >> Discussion of large-scale rendering: renderfarm infrastructure, > software, queue management, reliability, and performance. This is your opportunity to share woes of the technical and production aspects of large-scale rendering with a room of like-minded peers. Followed, at your option, by a strong drink in the bar with new friends to resolve those woes. The format is open discussion, but to make best use of our limited time together I'm asking beforehand for: * topic suggestions and starting points for discussion; and * short survey questions for our quick, show-of-hands polls that are often interesting. Reply direct to me or post here, whichever you prefer. Thanks -- hope to see you in LA. -- Mark Framestore, London To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe |

Hi Folks, I've been doing some tests with 10G and samba and I've observed a rather weird situation. My test setup is a mellanox 10G switch, a Mac pro with dual port 10G SFP+ Intel/Smalltree NIC and a samba file server, connected using a single 10G connection to the switch. Using Black Magic disk speed test, and a single 10G connection on the Mac Pro, I'm getting about ~820 MBps read and about ~660 MBps write but when I switch to LACP dual 10G connection, the performance drops significantly to ~185 MBps Write and 235 MBps read. Switch ports are configured as normal ports for single link configuration and as LAG+LACP for dual link and I'm using network settings preferences to create a link aggregation connection. Is this a known/common issue, are there any hidden settings/ configuration that I should tweak ? Thanks -Ali |
Asset Tracking Systems - what do you use

Folks,
We are looking at changing out Asset Tracking system and just wondering what people use out there now. The usual features are the need, fixed asset, depreciation, scanning input via wifi device etc etc. Ideally for me I would love a system that hooks into the helpdesk also, but I think I am limited to a standalone asset system and then have to make the connections to the various systems like I do now.
I have a few that I am looking at now, just hoping to hear what you use and are happy with.
Cheers.
