Server room thermostat recommendation
posted by Ryan Lynch on Aug. 24, 2015, 3:55 p.m.
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a server room thermostat? It needs to be able to accomplish lead lag between two separate AC systems. Remote functions would be plus but not required.

Our contractor wants to put a commercial model, the Venstar T2900 which would be replacing an older Trane T-stat. I'm hoping that there is a model which has had reasonable success in server room environments.

Thanks!

Ryan

Relocating ZBrush ZStartup directory?
posted by Jean-Francois Panisset on Aug. 24, 2015, 4:40 p.m. (1 day ago)
Has anyone found a way to tell ZBrush that its ZStartup directory lives somewhere else than in the application installation directory? That directory hierarchy is supposed to be to add custom stuff, and ZBrush wants to write to it on startup. This is bad for a number of reasons:

- you can't have project or user specific customization, or customization that follows the user to a different machine
- you are opening up permissions on C:\Program Files (x86) (their install does this for you)
- you can't relocate the app to a read-only share

Hey everyone,
does anyone know a USB 2.0 Extender (to Copper or Fiber) that works for sure with the Baselight Blackboard 2 panel?

The Icron and Ihse extenders from us don't work with the panel - maybe someone has a working setup. The Filmlight guys only know of a few that use Gefen extendern, but could not tell me exactly which one.

Thank you and cheers

I thought the blackboard typically goes right into the host node?

You would certainly need an active connection for it..... have you tried talking to Bradley?

Who do people like for cables in Vancouver?

Need someone who has stock for reasonably large quantities of DVI, USB, IEC power, etc...

Any recommendations or pointers to favourite suppliers would be appreciated.

Hi,

Any one tried commenting out /net from /etc/auto-master?

If so, what have you noticed?

Weve seen less Finder wack, seems in fact a bit better.

Just curious what the community has seen.

Has anyone got experience running Smoke 2016 on Mac with a Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K? We've just built a system and can't get a good video signal out of it. With the 10.4.x BM driver we always get a green line through VBI, and earlier drivers are unstable.

Thanks,

Good morning! A while back, during a test of our fire alarm systems, both of our server room AC units were disabled. Turns out the folks doing the tests had neglected to reset the switch. Fine. But I have to admit I wasnt aware that the fire alarm system would shut them off at all. Ive since done some reading and from what I can tell, a smoke/particulate detector is supposed to shut off AC & other air handlers/blowers to prevent spreading smoke / feeding the fire. What Im not clear on is the scope. Should my in-room ACs only be shut down by a sensor being tripped IN THE ROOM, or should I expect any alarm condition (on our floor or below us) to result in a shutdown of all my blowers? The building super says the latter (any alarm will shut me off) but that seems wrong/crazy to me. Anyone know the skinny on regulation (Im in NYC) and/or standard practice for these things? Hello,

It's been a while since I last looked at this and there are several considerations for setting nfs rsize & wsize but I'm curious what folks are doing these days?

Do you have multiple mounts with small and large settings tailored to the traffic type? If so what sizes do you use for which types of traffic with which storage product?

If you have just one mount, what's your generic setting?

If you're using a large rsizes, do you see inflated IO and memory utilization due to read ahead and buffers? A while back we found that some tasks had thousands of files open and the read buffers were based on the mounted block size. This caused several gigabytes in memory overhead.

At the moment we're using 32k for everything with Isilon storage and it's time to take another look.

Thanks,
- Chris

Hi there,

we are looking for a way to install the several Service Packs of Maya 2016 on Windows separately instead only the latest Service Pack per Maya version. Is there a way to do this? The Windows installer seems to uninstall previous Maya/Service Pack versions accordingly.

This could help us evaluating what Maya Version or Service Pack is a stable (enough) production release.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Peter

Hi,

I don't think it's worth the time investment to compare SP 1 vs. 2 etc. Take the latest one available as the odds of new bugs introduced with a later service pack are low.

Cheers!

Hello All,

We have a few machines with older Quadro FX3800's which I'd like to upgrade. Does anyone have a favorite gaming card that might be a better option than something like a Quadro K4000? We are primarily using After Effects and other Adobe apps as well as using these to render 3DS Max stuff.

Many thanks for any feedback.

Hi all,
We're facing a humidity problem in our server room for several weeks now.
Our A/C maintainers can't seem to find any solution for this, and even worse, they don't have a clue of the source of this humidity.

Do you guys know any A/C experts in West LA I could show this installation to ? Not just a company that installs units from reading the manuals, but one that knows about condensation/temperature environment principles.

Thanks !
