Fiber Optic Cabling - patch panel: LC/LC female coupler or Direct
posted by Mathieu Arseneault on May 3, 2016, 4:04 p.m. (1 day ago)

Hi,

Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with using LC/LC prefabricated cables with LC/LC female coupler at both ends,as opposed to the conventional fiber with field terminations behind the patch and wall jack ?

Looking to save money with the prefabricated, but don't want to loose reliability.

Thanks

Mathieu

Hi All,

I am trying to understand the views of this panel on SSD usage in media and entertainment workflows? Which of the following workloads currently deploy SSDs in your environments:

1) post-product non-linear editing

2) VFX/Renderfarms

3) Primary throughput storage

4) Primary capacity storage

5) Hot archival storage

6) Anything else?

New to this forum and space so trying to understand SSD usage in M&E space

Hi Community!

I need help by our new issue.

Exception: Legend Audio Communications error, hardware Underrun

Im getting this error every time i play the timeline. Although it says audio hardware, it does so even with only video on the timeline. Rendering the section helps so maybe its an i/o read/write speed?

We are running on Media Composer 8.4.5 and ISIS 1000, 10GB network card, where Jumbo packet is disabled. If i enable the jumbo packet, i am getting some errors form isis.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Kristian

Hi,

I wanted to make sure everyone here is aware that we are running the yearly crowdfunding campaign to support Krita development.

The main goal is to "make vector and text awesome", with several small to medium stretch goals, and a big one that I'm sure would interst people here: Python scripting.

Check the news here https://krita.org/item/lets-make-text-and-vectors-awesome-2016-kickstarter/

Finding a replacement for a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V QNAP iSCSI cluster shared storage array
posted by ddixon on May 23, 2016, 3:23 p.m. (3 days ago)

We are looking at replacing our QNAP TS-EC879U-RP iSCSI storage array that is being used for cluster shared storage in our two node Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V based cluster. Though the QNAP has served our needs well enough, other than a semi-disastrous firmware update failure of which we fortunately recovered from, the QNAP performed admirably. But, as our needs have grown we feel the need for a more robust cluster shared storage array is needed. Something with more enterprise level support. Is their a array that anyone out their in "Studio Sys Admins" land feel comfortable in recommending for our needs? Also how do you, and how difficult is it to migrate all of our current vm’s to the new array and reset up failover on the new array?

Hi Guys,

We are looking at increasing the amount of render nodes that we are using for a Deadline Render Farm.

We reached out to our supplier and they provided these specs which we think as a bit of overkill.

Broadcom 5720 QP 1Gb Network Daughter Card

ReadyRails Sliding Rails With Cable Management Arm

RAID 1 for H330/H730/H730P (2 HDDs or SSDs)

Windows Server 2012R2 Standard Edition,

Factory Installed, 2 Socket, 2 VMs, No CALs

Windows Server 2012R2 Standard Media

3Yr ProSupport: NBD Service (Parts + Labour)

Is there any other servers in the Dell rack mount range that anyone would suggest.

We are in need of these for a large show launch in the near future so any response would be great.

Hello!

I'm curious what software others are using for studio wide calendars. Right now we have a system in place where we use a shared calendar for booking rooms and resources, but some teams also have private calendars. This means they need to book events in both their private calendar, as well as on the public calendar, if they need to reserve a resource.

I've been looking for something that easily lets you add an event to multiple calendars, but I'm not having much luck.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hello,

I'm looking at implementing a digital floorplan for our office and was wondering if anyone had recommendations?

Currently I'm using Floorplan Mapper and it hasn't been the best experience.

PROS:

  1. Hover over a desk to see who sits there
  2. Click on a desk to see additional details such as extension #, department, title and photo
  3. Use a search bar or drop down to jump to a person on the floorplan

CONS:

  1. You have to upload a floorplan image and add users on top. There's a fee for uploading a new photo, so I can't easily make changes if a desk physically moves.
  2. It's difficult to add images. You need to know the exact path, and type it in for each person, you can't just upload.
  3. It glitches a lot. Sometimes I can't delete people, so if they leave, or change desks, I have multiple instances of them.

Essentially, I'd love something with all the same features, but easier photo uploading, and a little more control over the floorplan itself.

Thanks for any suggestions!

What do people on SSA use for DNS (and maybe DHCP) management?

I'm comfortable with a terminal and vi but would like to see a web app/portal that lets me take notes, maybe have an approval cycle, easy search etc.

Any feedback welcomed.

Is anyone selling older Avid ScriptSync Licenses?
posted by Jodie Capriotti on July 6, 2016, 6:49 p.m. (6 days ago)

Hello!

We have a client backed into a corner with some software updates. Their engineer is looking for older ScriptSync Licenses. Here's the story:

"Do you know if there is a market for used ScriptSync licenses? We have a client asking so they can augment one of their 8.0 machines to a 7.0 machine with ScriptSync compatibility. We know that new licenses are not being sold, but need to find out what type of used market there is (if any).

They’re looking for ScriptSync specifically. There is a work around for their version of Media Composer where they use a single station running MC 7.0.x and a copy of ScriptSync, then all the 8.5 bays can see the completed sync. But only 7.0.x can run it, and no new licenses are sold. Which means that the only way you can get it is used or rentals."

Anyone? I don't think price is an issue...(look at me throwing around other people's money).

Thank you!!

Hi, all

We've been hitting hurdles and roadblocks galore while trying to lock down machines, especially Macs. where the old practice of moving storage-relevant IOUSB and IOFirewire kexts out of Extensions no longer works in el Cap due to SIP but it was always precarious, causing silent update failures when kexts were found missing.

During one of our security audits, we were turned onto to Endpoint Protector (endpointprotector.com).  EPP4 is vastly more sophisticated than any set of lockdown scripts (with apologies to their authors) could hope to achieve and provides extensive and layered lockdown options for OSX, WIndows and Ubuntu/SuSE (RH/CentOS coming). The management WebUI runs as a VM on any popular hypervisor.  Clients are installed on protected systems and acquire their EPP security policy rules which remain active even when the machine is offline.

It's also cheap as chips, as they say here (well, until we dive into a depression - but that's a different story).  Shockingly well-priced for what it does, in fact.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with EPP or any of their resellers

cheers

Not sure I fully understand all the implications of trying ltfsck 0 --deep-recovery BEFORE sending a tape away for forensic data recovery.

the data is very important, but I would still give deep recovery a shot if it was non-destructive.

however, based on the fact that it requires you to switch the read-only tab off on the tape, I'm worried I might just make things worse.

Anyone know if attempting your own recovery first ruins any chance a professional place has of recovering your data later?

thanks!

Anyone know if attempting your own recovery first ruins any chance a professional place has of recovering your data later?

thanks!
