Hi Everyone,

I?d like to invite everyone in the Vancouver area or those visiting, to join us on February 20th (Wednesday) for the first Vancouver StudioSysadmins meeting of 2013.

This month?s topics are ?The Ultimate Remote Workstation Experience?, ? Fluid File System on Compellent Storage?, and ?Application Aware Power Management in Digital Media?

Remote Workstation:Whether it?s movie post-production, animation, CAD design, medical diagnostics, geospatial analysis, or stock trading?all require a powerful computing capability and are usually graphically intensive. Both these requirements are particularly challenging for VDI. However, Teradici?s PCoIP workstation solution benefits from the intrinsic attributes of PCoIP technology and has become the solution of choice for power users looking for maximum remote performance.

Fluid File System: Dell Fluid File System is designed to go beyond the limitations of traditional file systems with a flexible architecture that enables organizations to scale out non-disruptively. The Fluid File System architecture is open-standards based, supports industry-standard protocols and provides innovative features relating to high-availability, performance, efficient data management, data integrity and data protection. As a core component of the Dell Fluid Data architecture, Fluid File System brings differentiated value to the various Dell storage offerings. It is a network attached storage (NAS) file system accessed using CIFS and NFS protocols, but it has features and enhancements that make it unique

Power Management: This session will share how TSO can show you where power is being used to
create revenue and where it is being used to powering inactive servers.

Biographies:

Kenny Pak - Inside Sales Rep, Teradici
Kenny Pak is an Inside Sales Representative for Teradici; the creators of the PCoIP protocol where he delivers on client needs through support and education on the value of PCoIP technology in both workstation and VDI solutions. A graduate of Simon Fraser University with a degree in Electronics Engineering his career began with Ultrasonix Medical Corporation where he developed and improved testing software that provided a high level of quality assurance to the medical community. Following he joined Spark Integration Technologies as an Inside Sales & Marketing representative where he implemented ?software set ups as well as developed strategic marketing design plans to increase market awareness and build an external communication framework.

Carlo Spalvieri - Enterprise Technologist - Storage, Dell

Douglas Atkinson - Vice President of Sales, TSO Logic
Douglas Atkinson is a 30 year veteran of the IT industry with strong multi discipline technology background ?with two previous start-up successes and an emphasis on customer solutions and after sales support. ?Before starting with TSO Logic, he was with Oracle storage division, CTO at Seven Group and President of Optima Networks. ?Douglas is the Vice President of Sales at TSO Logic, the first application aware performance monitoring and power management solution, and is excited by the ability to reduce data centers carbon footprint especially in variable workload environments.

Keeping Final Cut Server Alive

By Chip Bobbert - Is anyone out there still using Final Cut Server? A recent round of Java updates seems to have killed it client side and I haven't found a good work around yet. Basically, it appears to "want" Java 1.5, it worked with 1.6, now with 1.7, it's dead. Easy enough to fix on a Windows box but Mac's don't really downgrade. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers! Instant Backups and Restores with the Potential for Eliminating Tape

By Anonymous - To whom it may concern:

If these are problems that the majority of media and entertainment companies managing >20TB of production capascity are struggling with, we would like the opportunity to discuss this in a forum and or be a speaker at an upcoming NYC event:

  1. Are your storage costs and the costs associated with managing and trying to control your storage growth getting out of control?

  2. Are your backup windows taking too much time?

  3. Are you having problems being able to read older tapes from your tape back-up, or are simply unsure whether they are still readable?

  4. Are you having problems meeting your downstream application SLAs?

  5. Can you guarantee compliance with 100% certainty that your restores and data recovery will actually work?

  6. If you're struggling with these issues, then we have good news for you, one solution from Actifio can solve each of these problems!

Regards, Zach

Help Desk & iPad

By Robert Mance -

I’m looking for a help desk type solution for the engineering team and would like to know if anyone is using the iPad and some type of app for this. The engineering group is getting bombarded with emails, phone calls, conversations in the hallway, etc. From some of the emails I’ve seen I think each person in this building feels they are the ONLY one with computer problems and we are all sitting down here ignoring them! There are times I get a phone call and show up in a room and here comes another, and another, and another engineer that got the same call. Are you kidding me!

As you can tell, I am really getting frustrated  … Any thoughts?

Roll your own flare on "unsupported" hardware - Gotchas

By Bryce Evans -
So after trying to install centos 6.2 with flare and the autodesk KS file, I kept running into kernel panics during the install, tried a bunch of boot options like all-generic-ide, noacpi acpi=off, switching the hard drive mode from ide to ahci etc. Finally ran across someone on the internet with a similar problem here?

Apparently in the way the installer handles the nvidia drivers, all you need to do is use?

nouveau.modeset=0

then the installer will kickstart normally, then just do the autodesk DKU afterwards to get the drivers.

The centos 6.3 installer works fine, but for some reason I decided to use the "officially supported" version.

For those curious, I'm running it on a dual 2690, supermicro, with a quadro 4000, and a few 2.5inch ssds striped together for the "framestore"

Works great for that flame support role, when you don't want to rent a second flame.

Java kills VMWare Fusion

$

By Jean-Francois Panisset - I do most of my work from a Mac laptop, with Windows 7 inside VMWare Fusion for Windows-centric stuff. And since Java stuff (typically switch and storage configuration GUIs) never seems to work on the Mac side, I've been typically doing that from the Windows side (run anywhere, right?). But for the last little while, trying to bring up a Java 7 app causes the Windows 7 guest to crash, which is very annoying. According to: http://communities.vmware.com/message/2167635 the solution is either to go back to Java 5 (ugh) or to disable 3D acceleration (not great either, but then again I don't do anything graphics intensive in my VM). I was able to verify that disabling 3D acceleration works for me (MBP 15" Retina). Anyway, just figured that there are probably others on this list who need to run Java-based apps inside of VMWare Fusion so I thought I would share...
