Checkout RLM License
posted by Saham Ali on March 4, 2014, 4 p.m.
Hey guys,
Were hosting a bunch of Foundry products via RLM.

We have a laptop we would like to "borrow" a license from our network so it can be taken on the go.

Other than specifically needing the floating license that support "borrowing" , and setting RLM_ROAM to a date value is there anything that needs to be done to take this license home?

Thanks!

Maya for OSX thin client install.
posted by Todd Smith on March 4, 2014, 4:40 p.m.
Hey all,

Thanks to Paul Nendicks great writeup on thin client Maya install for Linux we've had great success with moving our Linux based Maya installs to the network using AdlmThinClientCustomEnv.xml.

Now we want to get our Macs running the same way and I've located the variables needed to do this but I can't figure out where these paths are on OSX.  Here's a list of the paths:

ADLM_COMMON_BIN_LOCATION - This one I'm assuming is /Applications/Autodesk/Adlm/R8 as this is very similar to the Linux configuration.
ADLM_MAC_FRAMEWORK_LOCATION - No idea where this one is, the Linux one is in /var or /opt its not in either on OSX.
ADLM_PIT_FILE_LOCATION - /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk/Adlm/PIT/2014/MayaConfig.pit
ADLM_CASCADE_FILE_LOCATION - no idea yet.
ADLM_LICENSE_FILE_LOCATION - assuming this is the maya.lic location it's /var/flexlm
ADLM_APPLICATION_ADLM_RESOURCE_LOCATION
ADLM_APPLICATION_ERROR_LOG_FILE

Any help filling in the blanks would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

3COM Switch: 2952-48P 3CRBSG5293 you have?
posted by Greg Whynott on March 4, 2014, 5:30 p.m.
I will be attempting to help a remote site configure their 3com switch, which I'll start doing tomorrow I suspect.

we want to configure VLANS on this device to separate the business units.

they use a DHCP server.

I want to configure an IP helper address on each virtual interface configured on the 3com switch.

does anyone know if this particular switch supports that function (UDP/DHCP Helper)? I suspect it does due to the fact it supports Layer 3 and VLANS, but I am unable to find any reference on how to do so by looking at the manuals I've found.

to make things interesting, this is a product which was current in 3coms product lineup when HP bought them. HP re-branded them under a different name and continued to offer them.. Then there is the fact that 3com used a 29xx name in their switch, so 80% of hits are Cisco Cat 29xx related.

anyway.. i'm sure once I log in to it i'll be able to figure it out, just trying to get ready before that time so it appears I have a clue. 8)

The software - BRU; they recommend their own (re-badged HP), Overland, Tandberg - in that order. Prices - around $3.5K for Overland and Tandberg, $5K or more - for BRU/HP.

Reliability, support and warranty costs and quality - all matter.

Would anyone have recommendations or suggestions?

Thanks!

We may have a requirement for a Junior Desktop support role to be filled in the down-town Toronto area.

If anyone has a lead, please send them my email address. I'll post this on the SSA jobs area too but this is what people see daily so here it is!

While previous experience is great it is not a deal breaker for the proper person for this role. They should be interested in computers and considered a geek at some level.. no nerds. We have migrated most of the machines over to linux but windows still lingers.. Therefore they should be familiar and not afraid of linux as well as windows.

If you're looking for a decent non-Avid turnkey system, I'd back Editshare. Since Editshare V6 they have "Avid style" sharing which satisfied a couple of big feature editors at my facility, who only knew isis/unity etc. Hard assed service dept, but good product IMHO Gareth. Thought this might be of interest to some..

I needed to dump a db nightly on a system which people outside of my group may have elevated privileges on. I wanted to hide the password inside of the script.

I knew you could compile PHP code, or obfuscate it.. but until today I did not know you can compile bash scripts.

this fella came up with a method to convert the shell script into c code, then you can compile it.

anyway here is the link should you care to check it out:

Hey guys,
Before I go knocking on Autodesk Support, Id figure I ask the question here first.

Were having a strange issue in Maya 2014 (shocker)...
When going to Window -> Preferences and changing things like the default FPS and time slider default ranges, I can hit save, and see that it writes the UserPrefs.mel file in my documents.
I can open the file and verify the changes stick.
However If I close maya, and re open it, none of the settings are applied and were back to the original default FPS. With maya, open I can check the userprefs.mel file again and see the settings are still set to what I asked for, but in maya there default. Now when I close Maya again, it writes those default values back to the userprefs.mel and were back to square one.

Any ideas?

Can someone give me the quick breakdown on DKU's, flame versions, and hardware?

I know the DKU, hardware, and flame version need to line up to be supported.

That being said can you take a new Z820, load the latest DKU, and then run flame 2010 on it? Are all the DKU's backwards compatible or only for a few versions (ie 2 versions back)?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, So don't laugh, but we've got a project that has a security profile more in line with MPAA requirements than you normally see in advertising, and we'd like to make use of Flame with it. My experience with Flame over the years led me to conclude a long time ago that Flame + security is as likely a combination as Tom Cruise + DSM IV. Essentially, all of the functionality that makes Flame's workflow so seamless has to be completely neutered or disabled in order to ensure that media doesn't sneak out one of the many media paths available. I'm thinking that the most suitable approach would be to apply iptables rules to all of the S+W services and disable the high-speed S+W interface completely (which isn't catastrophic, since it's a separate path from the main house networking). Has anyone else ever attempted something like this? Anything you'd be willing to share from your experiences? I suppose having not seen a Friday Funnies posting for today, that this posting might quality. ;-) cheers, Klaus To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe

we have a partner overseas who owns an Aspera server. they want us to upload to it.

The last time we needed to do this, we downloaded the client and uploaded the material, if I recall.

This week it seems to be a huge challenge to get a p2p client so we can upload to them.

is it not free anymore (or was it ever?).. Trying to download it from the site appears to be impossible without an account, and there is no place to create an account from what I can tell.

thanks!
